1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Mikhail Golubev, Christophe Bouton, Rakesh Kulkarni, Gerard Demuydt, Dalibor Milenkovic, Robert Baskin, Alex Holowczak, David Barnes and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

Much online chess was announced this week. Magnus Carlsen announced a rapid series that will take place until the Autumn this starts tomorrow with the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge and that runs for the rest of May and into early June. Saint Louis dipped their toe in with a new Clutch Chess Format and an event at the end of the month, FIDE have said they want 2000 online events in the coming months. This week we had Alexander Grischuk playing the Chessbrahs event as well as the Steinitz Memorial one after the other for a couple of days, this didn't go well. However earlier in the week Grischuk did win the very strong Play For Russia tournament beating Tomashevsky in the final. Magnus Carlsen sounded disappointed with his play but he won the FIDE Online Steinitz Memorial event by two points which is about as comfortable as it can get. Top seed Kateryna Lagno won the women's event but only after an Armageddon game against Lei Tingjie. Elsewhere there was lots of blitz online to look at with many of the best players in the world.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) FIDE Online Steinitz Memorial 2020

The FIDE Online Steinitz Memorial took place 15th to 17th May 2020. Two 10 player events an Open and a Women's event - 18 Round Double Round Robin over 3 days.

Invited players open: Magnus Carlsen, Alexander Grischuk, Le Quang Liem, Daniil Dubov, Peter Svidler, Jeffery Xiong, Anton Korobov, David Anton, Sergey Karjakin Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. In the women's section: Kateryna Lagno, Elisabeth Paehtz, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Antoaneta Stefanova and Tan Zhongyi, Lei Tingjie, Zhansaya Abdumalik, Deysi Cori, Sarasadat Khademalsharieh.

Magnus Carlsen won the Open event by a full two points from Daniil Dubov who had a bad final day but did at least hold on to second place in the final round. Although Carlsen wasn't at his very best it was good enough to win comfortably in the end. Favourite Kateryna Lagno won the women's event after an Armageddon blitz tie-break against Lei Tingjie. The next event is on Tuesday with the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge: May 19 - June 3.

4) Chessbrah Invitational May 2020

The Chessbrah May Invitational took place May 15th to 16th 2020 on Chess.com. Alireza won the 6 player Double Elimination Format blitz event beating MVL in the first round, Alexander Grischuk in the second Round and Anish Giri in the final. Grischuk lost to Giri in the first round but had a second chance in the repechage double round all-play-all where he scored 3/4, MVL 2/4 and Caruana scored 1/4. Grischuk's attempt to play this event and the Steinitz Memorial on the same days seems to have affected his chances in both. On the naming of the event it was officially called the Chessbrah Invitational but it's entirely possible there will be more of these in the future.

15) UKR vs RUS LCWL 2020

Mikhail Golubev reports on the Live Chess World League Final between Russia and Ukraine.

The fate of the title of the 5th season of the Live Chess World League, which is played on chess.com , was decided in the giant match between Team Ukraine and Team Russia.

Russia needed to win no less than two of three sections of the match for being able to take gold. Such outcome wasn’t looking impossible, because on the preliminary stage Russia defeated Ukraine, even if Russian team lost several match points in their encounters with other teams.

But Team Ukraine learned the lesson, consolidated extremely well on the decisive day, and won confidently in all three sections: 808-396 in the 1+1 Bullet (602 boards), 942-506 in the 5+2 Blitz (724 boards) and 650,5-493,5 in the 10+2 Rapid: (572 boards). Thus, Team Ukraine remains the Live Chess World League champions.

Some players even on the top boards preferred to play anonymously, but no less than 30 grandmasters participated in the decisive match: majority of GMs were Ukrainians, including Pavel Eljanov, Yuriy Kuzubov and many other strong professionals.

A number of players from the third federations decided to play for Ukraine or Russia: membership in the national federation is not required at all for playing in the league’s teams. Earlier this year GM Stanislav Bogdanovich’s decision to play for Team Russia against Team Ukraine on the LCWL preliminary stage provoked a huge scandal in media. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian grandmaster and his girlfriend Alexandra Vernigora tragically died in Moscow on March, 5, in a less than a week after that ill-fated match.

16) 4NCL Online 2020

The 4NCL Online League takes place Tue 7th Apr to Sat 6th Jun 2020. The league replaces the regular season that has been halted due to the coronavirus. The time control is 45 minutes + 10 seconds a move. Games are played a 7:30pm on a Tuesday on Lichess. There is a 32 team top league - 10 rounds will be played followed by an 8 team knockout final phase to decide the winner. There are 5 divisions of varying strengths - who knows - I may turn up playing in one of the lower sections. Anti-cheating measures are in place.

17) Forthcoming Events and Links

Note that most of these events will not take place now. The big news is the online Magnus Carlsen Invitational. Many of the events left in the calendar for the next months will surely be cancelled. Some European events such as the men's and women's championship have been moved towards the end of the year, still no guarantee they will take place. As an amateur player I think it likely I won't play over the board chess again this year.
