My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Peter Doggers, Simon McNamara, Daniil Yuffa, Dennis Monokroussos, J. Oskar Stoeber Blazquez and everyone else who helped both with this issue.
Magnus Carlsen managed to win the inaugural Magnus Carlsen Invitational but it was a close run thing. In the semi-finals Ding Liren took the lead in game two and looked very much in control with black in game three before Carlsen turned it around. In the final too Nakamura struck back to level the match up at 1-1 before Carlsen took control. Carlsen promised more online events and with the disruption to all activities due to the coronavirus likely to continue for a long time yet we're certainly going to need online chess to work. The Sunway tournament finished this week with a blitz on the final day, it emerged after that quite a few people had been caught cheating and disqualified. A whole range of issues come up. Starting from why do people cheat? To the very strong denials and indeed outrage of players who completely deny the allegations. In Sunway one of the disqualified players beat a GM in round 1 of that event and said he won fair and square, he asked people to consider just how poorly his opponent had played in that case. In the 4NCL just as I write this one of the teams has withdrawn after one of their players was accused of cheating which he denied strenuously.
We're in the early days of this crisis but my main thought it we will have to make online chess work, otherwise most of us are not going to be playing anything other than very fast chess (not that you can't cheat at that as well) for a very long time. I also would like to see more classical time controls tried. Perhaps as restrictions are eased it will be possible to have arbiters present to allow players to compete with each other over the internet in major competition. I see international travel being very problematic for a long time. With a bit of imagination I'm sure some very attractive events could be developed.
Due to an improvement in the documentation on chess.com I was able to publish far more games from their many strong blitz events this week. Whether this is a good idea or not is another matter. I could probably find unlimited amounts of blitz chess involving the best chess players in the world if I needed. I saw mention on twitter that Carlsen beat Firouzja at bullet (1 minute chess) on Lichess last night for instance.
Also some players were not best pleased last week that some of their online games (in reasonably well publicised events it has to be said) turned up in databases after I published them, especially as their handles were in many cases not indicative of their real identities. These handles had been published alongside their real names in material surrounding the event. In the past most of these online blitz tournaments would have gone unpublished, but right now all chess is online, so what to do? I'm going to have to look at the balance as we go on.
Tomorrow the FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup starts and runs through until Sunday with many of the best players in the world competing. A week tomorrow is the "Play for Russia" event which is again very strong. After that I'm not sure what the next elite online events might be.>
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark

The Magnus Carlsen Invitational was an online tournament hosted by chess24 which took place April 18th to May 3rd 2020. With over the board chess suspended for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus crisis this was a welcome new event. The concept was one similar to one Carlsen advocated in 2018 for the World Championship - a number of rapid games in one day rather than a single classical game. The format was a Match Round Robin of 8 players meeting each other once over four 15 minute + 10 seconds a move games, if this mini-match was tied 2-2 there was a single decisive Armageddon game. The top 4 played in a knockout final stage to decide the winner. The prize fund was $250,000 and a star studded field competed alongside Carlsen.
The Magnus Carlsen Invitational was brought to you by chess24.com Learn more about the tournament at magnuscarlsen.com/en/invitational.
Magnus Carlsen Invitational field was: Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Ding Liren, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anish Giri, Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja.
Magnus Carlsen beat Hikaru Nakamura 2.5-1.5 in the final.

The Sunway Sitges Online Open tournament finally got underway on 19th April 2020 after a few teething problems, the event ran until the 28th April on the chess.com server. What made this tournament interesting to me is that it's an attempt to play a fully fledged open online, with standard time controls. I don't believe it will be possible to organise large international opens for a long time because of the conornavirus crisis. Inessential international travel and rooms with large numbers of people sat in close proximity to each other don't sound like things we will want to be doing for quite some time. This will leave a huge hole to be filled. Playing such events online, with all the well known problems they have, seems like the only alternative. Leading players: Vitaliy Bernadskiy, Ahmed Adly, Axel Bachmann, Kirill Shevchenko, Jesper Sondergaard Thybo, Alexandr Fier etc. Ahmed Adly won the tournament after winning the 16 player blitz tie-break beating Liam Vrolijk. Rodrigo Vasquez Schroeder finished 3rd. There may be more games from the preliminary section to follow.

The Titled Tuesday Blitz tournament is a now weekly tournament for any player with a title from National Master on up. Anton Korobov won with 8.5/9. This event had over 1000 players and a huge number of games. I identified who I could among the first few hundred players (272 in all) and found the games between these players. I've added a few blitz tournaments from Chess.com as the documentation has improved. I'm not yet sure whether this is really a good idea or not.

The 4NCL Online League takes place Tue 7th Apr to Sat 6th Jun 2020. The league replaces the regular season that has been halted due to the coronavirus. The time control is 45 minutes + 10 seconds a move. Games are played a 7:30pm on a Tuesday on Lichess. There is a 32 team top league - 10 rounds will be played followed by an 8 team knockout final phase to decide the winner. There are 5 divisions of varying strengths - who knows - I may turn up playing in one of the lower sections. Anti-cheating measures are in place.
The Oleg Kalinin Memorial Simul took place on Lichess on May 4th. Vasyl (as his name is now given in the rating list) Ivanchuk played 6 players winning 5 and being held to a draw by Nikita Semenukha. Beyond the games I really don't have any info.

Note that most of these events will not take place now. The big news is the online Magnus Carlsen Invitational. Many of the events left in the calendar for the next months will surely be cancelled. Some European events such as the men's and women's championship have been moved towards the end of the year, still no guarantee they will take place. As an amateur player I think it likely I won't play over the board chess again this year.
