1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Miguel E. Gomez Masjuan, Peter Doggers, Simon McNamara, Jim Hollingsworth, and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

The Magnus Carlsen International continues with the event heading towards the four player knockout stage. It seems likely that Carlsen, Nakamura, Caruana and Ding will be the final four unless some very specific results occur. The Sunway Open continues online with them also reaching a final knockout stage starting tomorrow to decide the prizes. The FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup starts a week tomorrow with a lot of very strong players competing. Plenty of things to look forward to online although it's disappointing but not entirely surprising to hear continued reports of people being caught cheating in various online events. However the alternative to playing online right now is not playing at all so I think we have to persist and hope that the experience we gain will provide some lasting and better solutions than we have now.

2) Magnus Carlsen Invitational 2020

Invitational is an online tournament hosted by chess24 which takes place April 18th to May 3rd 2020. With over the board chess suspended for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus crisis this is a welcome new event. The concept is one similar to one Carlsen advocated in 2018 for the World Championship - a number of rapid games in one day rather than a single classical game. The format is a Match Round Robin of 8 players meeting each other once over four 15 minute + 10 seconds a move games, if this mini-match is tied 2-2 there will be a single decisive Armageddon game. The top 4 will play in a knockout final stage to decide the winner. The prize fund is $250,000 and a star studded field will compete alongside Carlsen.

3) IM Not A GM Speed Chess 2020

The IM Not A GM Speed Chess tournament takes place on chess.com. The event started on April 18th and will most likely run through until late April or early May. Some of the most well known figures in online broadcasting and chess provision compete in long blitz matches consisting of 75 minutes of 5+1 blitz, 45 minutes of 3+1 blitz, and 25 minutes of 1+1 bullet chess. The first round is now complete, top seed John Bartholomew of Chessable beat David Preuss 20-6, Levy Rozman beat Tania Sachdev 14.5-5.5. Alina Kashlinskaya beat Christof Sielecki 13-11, Gregory Shahade beat Anna Zatonskih 14-9, Eric Rosen beat Elisabeth Paehtz 17-7, Lawrence Trent beat Konstantin Kavutskiy 15.5-6.5, Teddy Coleman beat Danny Rensch in overtime 15-13 and Carissa Yip beat Dean Ippolito 13.5-8.5.

4) 1st Cuban Online Cup 2020

The 1st Cuban Online Cup started April 12th 2020. The top two seeds reached the final where Leinier Dominguez Perez defeated Lazaro Bruzon 3.5-2.5. Games from the final are available. The format was a 32 players KO, with matches of 6 games (2 blitz of 5 minutes, 2 blitz of 3 minutes, 2 bullets and in case of a tie, a game of Chess 960. 5) Sunway Sitges International Online 2020

The Sunway Sitges Online Open tournament finally got underway on 19th April 2020 after a few teething problems, the event will run until the 27th April on the chess.com server. What makes this tournament interesting to me is that it's an attempt to play a fully fledged open online, with standard time controls. I don't believe it will be possible to organise large international opens for a long time because of the conornavirus crisis. Inessential international travel and rooms with large numbers of people sat in close proximity to each other don't sound like things we will want to be doing for quite some time. This will leave a huge hole to be filled. Playing such events online, with all the well known problems they have, seems like the only alternative. Leading players: Vitaliy Bernadskiy, Ahmed Adly, Axel Bachmann, Kirill Shevchenko, Jesper Sondergaard Thybo, Alexandr Fier etc. I am not quite sure how the second phase will work, I guess we'll see. The table below is more or less the final standings, there was one result (Board 22 Badillo Ramos Steve vs FM Randazzo Adrian) that seemed to be missing when I grabbed it.

6) TCEC Season 17 2020

The TCEC Computer Program tournament Season 17 final stages take place 17th March until roughly the start of May. The Premier Division finished with Leela Chess Zero winning ahead of Stockfish, those two played a 100 game match, Leela won 52.5-47.5 including winning on both sides of the same set opening late on..

The 5th TCEC Cup started 24th April 2020. 16 computer knockout. Stockfish beat Komodo and LCZero beat 4.5-3.5 AllieStein to reach the final.

8) 18th Red River Shootout

"Oklahoma Cruises in 10-1/2 to 7-1/2

Victory over Texas in Red River Shoot Out

In RRSO XVIIISS, an online version of the annual Red River Shoot Out classic between Oklahoma and Texas, Texas drew first blood on Board 2 to briefly lead 1-0. The Okies knotted things up at 1-1 and managed a 5-1/2 to 3-1/2 halftime lead. The final score was 10-1/2 to 7-1/2 in favor of Oklahoma.

The genesis of RRSO XVIIISS began on March 17th when the original RRSO XVIII was cancelled due to a pandemic. Players on both sides were determined not to allow Grand Master Coronovrus Covid-19 to win. The idea of a "Revenge" match was born. Recruiting started on April 3rd. "SS" (Roman numerals meaning one-half) was accomplished on Saturday, April 18th, the same day as the original RRSO XVIII.

The team match was hosted by Internet Chess Club (ICC). Texas Armed Forces Chess, a subordinate element of Bedford's American Legion Post 379, covered all rating costs. The time control was Game/15;+5 and the online event was dual-rated as ICC standard and US Chess Quick.

The FIDE Candidates Countries Youth Online tournament featured under-16 teams from the nations of all the players at the recent Candidates tournament plus a FIDE all nations side. They played a two day team event 18th to 19th April 2020 on chess.com. The FIDE team just edged out the Chinese team on board count in spite of losing their individual match. Games now available. 14) 4NCL Online 2020

The 4NCL Online League takes place Tue 7th Apr to Sat 6th Jun 2020. The league replaces the regular season that has been halted due to the coronavirus. The time control is 45 minutes + 10 seconds a move. Games are played a 7:30pm on a Tuesday on Lichess. There is a 32 team top league - 10 rounds will be played followed by an 8 team knockout final phase to decide the winner. There are 5 divisions of varying strengths - who knows - I may turn up playing in one of the lower sections. Anti-cheating measures are in place.

Note that most of these events will not take place now. The big news is the online Magnus Carlsen Invitational. Many of the events left in the calendar for the next months will surely be cancelled. Some European events such as the men's and women's championship have been moved towards the end of the year, still no guarantee they will take place. As an amateur player I think it likely I won't play over the board chess again this year.
