1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Simon McNamara, Marek Prus, Rainer Polzin, David Llada and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

My prediction last week that the Candidates tournament might not finish on schedule came true after just one further round. Announcements from the Russian President Vladimir Putin meant it increasingly looked strange that the Candidates continued, the cancellation of flights in and out of the country was the final straw for FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and he sent the players home. Resumption on the same number of points will happen when it can. The question as to whether the event should have started, whether Teimour Radjabov was right not to play and so on have been discussed at length.

When the Candidates can be resumed and whether it will be in time for the World Championship match to take place as scheduled at the end of the year are questions that don't particularly interest me right now, I simply want this Coronavirus crisis to go away. Even if the Candidates and World Championship Match happen this year I wonder when mass participation international opens can realistically take place. The immediate future of chess is online. There is bound to be much less chess in TWIC in the coming few months, I will use the time to improve the website and the program routines I use to produce the magazine. Most of all I'll try and stay safe. I wish everyone out there good health.

2) FIDE Candidates Tournament 2020

The FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament was scheduled to take place in Yekaterinburg, Russia Sun 15th Mar 2020 to Sun 5th Apr 2020. Due to the Coronavirus crisis the event was halted after 7 of the 14 rounds. It will be resumed when safe to do so. Players: Fabiano Caruana, Ding Liren, Wang Hao, Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Kirill Alekseenko and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
