I am still awaiting some more details from the Olympiad. If anyone has the full placings and board medal winners I'm still looking for them. I thought I'd do a little review of the year. I'd forgotten about all the events. I also have done a short comment on the politics of the year. It could have been longer but in the end it is probably a bit boring. Besides, in the end the play is the thing. Lots of people ask me to put the games at the end of TWIC so I'll give that a try. Thanks to Shay Bushinsky and Anjo Anjewierden for games from Nir-Galim and Groningen and to Wlodek Proskurowski for the studies. This was the year that saw Kamsky become a potential World Champion and his achievements were undoubtably the talking point of the year. Linares was won in grand style by Anatoly Karpov. I believe Karpov will continue to have big results but his age will mean that his results will gradually become more variable. Certainly after this event in February he didn't have another result anything like as good. The tournament probably showed up technical weaknesses of the younger players, Kasparov took them on tactically whereas Karpov used a mixture of methods and was lethal in slightly better endings. Kasparov --------- After Linares a curiously restrained Kasparov was somewhat fortunate to win in Amsterdam after Ivanchuk lost in the final round. It had been hoped that Karpov would play but he had nothing to gain by doing so after his Linares result. Piket 2670 3) POLITICS ------------- I feel very pessimistic about the administration of World Chess after Campomanes was re-elected as FIDE President. This after he had promised to go away earlier in the year. The last four years of his presidency has been a shambles in which politics was high on his agenda and administration was minimal. His TV appearances in the UK during the Short-Kasparov match last year were absolutely embarassing. The PCA managed to organise a Grand Prix of Speed Chess events and a World Championship cycle. Unfortunately they forgot to tell anyone. We'll see how the new Kaspomanes regime does, their track record in my opinion is bad. There were a lot of stories during the FIDE elections about the conduct of it. (one story from Malcolm Pein talking about the Kazakh delegate getting confused during the constitutional vote on whether Campomanes could stand, was incorrect, he became confused during the privacy vote. - its an important distinction) I will wait for the Chess Magazines - particularly New in Chess to find out the details. In my opinion there wasn't a rational reason to vote for Campomanes. 4) HASTINGS 1994 --------------------- The Hastings Tournament 1994-5 opened in Wednesday 28th December 1994. The event is still without a sponsor other than the local council, who have shown great commitment to the event. This event starts a year of celebrations of the centenary of the Hastings 1895 Tournament which was won by the then almost unknown Pillsbury above almost all of the greats of the time. It is a sad fact that next year's event still has no sponsor and that soon it may be too late to organise a decent event for next year. In fact with the loss of Lloyds Bank Open (the bank has supported British chess for many years and is to be thanked wholeheartedly for that) Britain is getting very short of international events. It is to be hoped that things can be turned round in the next year, but I don't hold out much hope. This years is a reasonable category event which doubles as a commemoration of the skills of Vera Menchik who died 50 years ago this year. HASTINGS PREMIER.
