Speed Chess and computer chess take the headlines this week. With the AEGON Tournament giving an indication of the best of the rest the Kasparov vs Deep Blue will concentrate the minds of computer chess fans. This is likely to be the highest profile chess event in the 1990's and success for the IBM program will break a barrier that computer scientists having been working towards for 50 years. Kasparov starts the favourite because the strength of the computer is unknown (except to those involved in the programming) but the massive resources and testing that have gone towards the match mean that a huge improvement might be seen. There will be coverage on my pages this week leading up to the matches start on May 3rd. Hope you enjoy this issue.

The games sections have the April tournaments complete. Peter Acs secured his first Grandmaster norm in the April First Saturday tournament. Here is an interview given to Laszlo Nagy last week.
Interview with 16 year old Peter Acs about his chess career by Laszlo Nagy.
My address: 7030 Paks, Hungary, Ifj·sßg ·t 14. III.10. Phone: Intl. (36)-75-312-278
2. At what age did you learn chess?
I have learned to move with chess pieces when I was 4 from my father. I went to the local chess club when I was 5. I had lessons of 2 hours a week. I played more seriously from the age of 9.
3. How old are you?
I will be 16 on the 10th of May 1997.
4. Who were your chess trainers, teachers or coaches?
When I was 5, my first trainer was Istvan Vinnay, a first class player. When I was 9 IM Sandor Videki became my new trainer. I have been with by current trainer IM Dr. Laszlo Hazai since 1993.
5. What is your goal in chess?
I would like to be a member of the Hungarian Olympic Team and to become one of the best chess players of the world.
6. What was your best achievement in chess?
My best adult result was the one at the April First Saturday event where I scored my first GM norm. I was the No.1. junior in Europe in 1992 and 3rd in the World Junior Championships in 1996 in the under 16 section.
7. What was your worst fiasco in chess?
I played badly in the final of the Hungarian Championship in December 1996 and I finished last.
8. What kind of development you see in your chess in one, three, five and ten years?
I would like to become a GM over the coming year. Within 3 years I want to be a member of the Hungarian Olympic team. In 5 years to play in category XVII - XIX. tournaments. In 10 years to win one.
9. Who is your favorite chessplayer and why?
I like the Indian Anand, because I like his style of play and he is very sympathetic like a human as well.
10. What time do you plan to return to Budapest?
I will play in the June First Saturday Tournament in Budapest to try and make my 2nd norm, if I play well.

The event was won by Yona Kosashvili a doctor with the Israeli army. He hasn't played too much but his results did show an improving player before joining the army. He played clear logical chess in scoring his 100% score.
Yasser Seirawan confirmed his reputation as a calm player in this type of event. His only draw was probably slightly unlucky also.
Johannes Van Mil was the top IM also on 5.5 points.
The Grandmasters scored 72% and seemed fairly comfortable.
This year the human losses had a few reasons. Computers are good enough to punish outright bad play. Computers employ simple and sound technique such as development and control of the centre which with their calculative power is enough to compensate for the lack of long range planning. Weird openings conceding massive development or space advantages generally got the humans into trouble. Also a number of games were lost because there was no clear plan for the human. In trying to adapt their game the humans just ended up playing bad chess. Games with unclear short range tactics were clearly favourable to the computer, even if they were theoretically better for the human. As computers can calculate further more players will be in trouble against them, the programmers of CILKCHESS claim that they were only a couple of ply short of winning against Johannes Van Mil in the final round but it just could not see far enough. In many games, no matter how positionally advantageous a tactical solution is necessary and you need to be strong enough to calculate this. As the general standard of programs rises it will not be possible for the weakest players to compete.
The top PC Programs were:
Kallisto by Bart Weststrate and Jan Louwman from the Netherlands. It scored 4/6 last year but its tournament performance rating was over 300 points better this year.
Rebel written by Ed Schröder and Jeroen Noomen from the Netherlands. With Rebel 8 at the top of the computer rating list it was not a surprise to see the program do well at AEGON.
Chessmaster 5000 looked like a late entry, not mentioned in the pre-tournament summary. The most widely promoted chess program didn't have a reputation for being stronger than the more specialist commercial programs and its result will no doubt be a welcome boost for it.
Some of the more well known programs scored quite poorly, however a six round Swiss system event was never going to be long enough to establish the real difference between the programs. For instance Genius was treated with great care by the humans and it consequently drew a lot of games.
In conclusion the humans were only beaten narrowly 151.5-148.5 an improvement over last years 162.5-137.5. However the human contingent was stronger than last year and also the time rate was slower than in previous years. Nevertheless it seems to me that predictions of computer domination in the next two years are very wide of the mark. There will be a gradual improvement year by year unless something changes radically. Such changes would be either some radically new way of programming computers to play chess or a massive change in the power of the hardware (Deep Blue will be the test of this as the computer used is by several orders of magnitude faster than the best PC). Next year a slight increase in the average strength of the players will be sufficient to hold the balance. The computers to watch will not be those run on PCs but those which take advantage of parallel processing.

Information from Eric Schiller. http://www.chessworks.com/
The Outrigger Prince Kuhio International Chess Tournament was held April 15-24 at the Outrigger Prince Kuhio Hotel in beautiful; Waikiki. This was the fourth Hawaii International Chess Tournament, 7 Grandmasters took part in a field of 56 players, including local stars whose participation was supported by a generous grand from First Hawaiian Bank. The event used a new time control, with 40 moves in two hours followed by all moves in an hour with a three-second increment.
This year the battle for first place was fierce. When the dust settled, Turkish Grandmaster Suat Atalik, British GM Tony Miles, and rising American star Tal Shaked earned shares of first place with 7.5 points out of 10 games. Miles had an especially impressive event, holding a difficult position against Blatny and defeating both Shaked and Stefanova, who each earned GM norms! Shaked defeated Stefanova in the last round, a game which may not have been as stressful as it might have been since each had clinched a grandmaster norm in the 9th round. Atalik simply showed the form he displayed when he won the US Masters Championship in Chicago in March. Last year's runner-up Pavel Blatny swept his first 5 games and looked like a sure bet, but he faded at the end.
Nineteen year old International Master Tal Shaked (Arizona) achieved his third Grandmaster norm at the Outrigger Hawaii International Chess Tournament, scoring 7.5 out of a possible 10 points, which earned him a share of first place.. Shaked, who obtained GM norms in two other tournaments over the past six months, obtained the norm with one round to spare with an exciting ninth round victory over Hawaii's own International Master Ben Deng. Shaked now needs only to obtain a similar score in one more international event before he will be awarded the world chess federation's highest title. His chess studies this year are funded by a Sanford Fellowship, which has allowed Tal to concentrate on chess and work with leading trainers.
Eighteen year old International Woman Grandmaster Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria) was clearly the surpise of the Outrigger Hawaii International Chess Tournament, shocking the tournament hall with her electric ninth round victory over last year's tournament runner up, Grandmaster Pavel Blatny. Stefanova's upset of Blatny secured her not only a tie for first place heading into the tournament's final round, but her first norm for the Grandmaster title (FIDE awards an unrestricted Grandmaster title, which is much more prestigious than the Woman Grandmaster title). She finished in a tie for fourth place with Ron Burnett when she lost in the last round to Tal Shaked, but FIDE regulations allow her to claim a nine-game norm anyway. She now needs two more norms for the title. This norm also counts toward her International Master title, but she already has more than enough qualifications for that title and will be awarded it later this year.
FIDE Master Ron Burnett finally earned his International Master title by tying for 6th place with 6.5 points out of ten.
The Philippines brightest young star, Arianne Caoili started slowly after her strenous trans-pacific journey but came on strong at the end and earned 4points in the event. Her most impressive result was holding a draw against Woman Grandmaster Elisabeth Polihroniade of Rumania. She defeated James Yee and Lewis Tomsic and also drew with Scott Roods, Paul Smith and Benjamin Udarbe.
Local, Mainland, and Foreign players earn international rankings
The following unranked players achieved FIDE ratable performances at the tournament: Chip Chapin (USA: Hawaii), Patrick Hummel (USA: Nevada. Age 12!), Bruce Martin (USA: Hawaii), Cornelius Rubsamen (German & Hawaii), David Rupel (USA), Paul Smith (USA: Hawaii), Thomas Spiess (Germany).
Hawaii expects to host to three major international chess events in 1998. The Hawaii Chess Federation has already been awarded the 1998 United States Open Championship, which will be held at the Kona Surf Resort on the Big Island from August 1-9, 1998. We have made a bid for the 1998 MenÕs, WomenÕs and Junior Invitational Championship, and expect that we will be successful and host these events in late July in Waikiki or Maui. The 5th Hawaii International Chess Tournament is tentatively scheduled for August 11-20, 1998 either on Oahu or Maui. Details for these events will be available in August, 1997 or sooner at http://www.chessworks.com/hawaiichess.htm.
