Dos Hermanas starts tomorrow and as usual there will be full coverage on these pages. Plenty of chess in this issue too.
Hope you enjoy this issue Mark
The Category 19 Dos Hermanas tournament in Spain gets underway tomorrow, Tuesday 1st April 1997. The event will be a Category 19 event with an average ELO rating of 2702. As predicted the mercurial genius Vassily Ivanchuk has withdrawn from the event and is to be replaced by Nigel Short. There will be daily reports on my www pages.

I have rewritten the article that appeared on my pages a few days ago to take account of new information from the Chess Planet page and especially to clarify the original article's intention, which was not an attack on the Chess Planet report.
The proposed match between Anatoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov is unlikely to go ahead due to lack of sponsorship. The match would have produced an undisputed World Chess Champion. The regulations for the match were broadly agreed in discussions between the two players during the chess Olympiad in Yerevan last year.
There have been two title-holders since 1993 when Kasparov took his World title match against Short outside the international chess federation, FIDE's control. FIDE responded with a title match of their own which was won by Karpov. For most of the time since Kasparov has been recognised as the strongest player in the World and Karpov the second strongest. In these circumstances a high profile and lucrative match seemed very possible especially as the only tournament that both played in, Linares 1994, was won clearly by Karpov.
However after the two players came to an agreement they also decided to play in a tournament together. The Las Palmas tournament in December 1996 brought together the top six players in the World. The result of the event cast doubt on the commercial value of a match. Kasparov was an impressive winner whilst Karpov finished last. The result was Karpov's second consecutive poor result. The impression that Kasparov was playing his best chess for many years was confirmed by his victory in the Linares tournament this year. Karpov did not compete as he was standing for election to the Russian parliament.
There have been reports in recent weeks that the match would be held in the Municipality of Compiegne in France. The stories started in Liberation a French newspaper but gained international currency through their reporting on the Chess Planet www page. That article gave some details. The match would be in Napoleon's Palace with a prize fund of $3,000,000 starting on October 21st. It was not that I thought Chess Planet was making the story up just that there seemed too few details (the phrase "lack of substance" in my original article can be misinterpreted) and that the likelihood of it being the venue was pretty small. There have been a number of reports of potential sponsors for the match that have come to nothing. In Willy Iclicki's article of the 31st March he sited the organiser Mr. Stroe as the source of the article rather than the French media in the first article which was really rather vague. Mr Stroe has subsequently been in touch with Karpov's lawyer, Kasparov's new manager and FIDE itself. He wishes to hold the match under FIDE's auspices (because this will make it easier to raise the money) which he admits is likely to cause complications both with Karpov and Kasparov who have agreed to a match explicitly outside any organisation.
Since the original article a number of chess magazines have published the details from the Chess Planet article. Raymond Keene of the Times having not seen the original brief report went as far as to say that the match had been announced. He seems to have got a garbled version that had been translated from French, to English, to German before being returned to English. The chess correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, Malcolm Pein, brought the Keene article to Kasparov's attention.
"When asked about the possible venue for the match, he laughed the idea off, commenting: "I'd like to thank the Telegraph for informing me of this development, otherwise I would have missed the match!" He explained that there were no basis for this story which was just another fabrication from "the friends of Karpov", the idea being that when it is called off: "They will blame me for it." He further explained that, as yet, there are still no funds for the match." [Source: John Henderson Channel 4 Teletext]
Whilst the details from Willy Iclicki do make it clear that Compiegne is trying to put together a bid (not a fabrication as Kasparov would have it) the obstacles still seem to me insuperable. Kasparov clearly doesn't believe that the match will take place.
Starting on March 31st there will be an international tournament in Dos Hermanas, Spain. The competitors will include most of those who played in Linares excluding Kasparov. If Karpov were to win convincingly there then belief in his chances against Kasparov might return. If he plays badly I see no prospect of a reunification match happening at all.
Lars Bo Hansen was the convincing winner of the Danish Championships in Esbjerg which finished on Sunday. He was already assured of first place with a round to go and he finished a point and a half clear of the rest of the field. ELO favourite Curt Hansen was amongst three players on 5 points in joint second. It was nice to see that Bent Larsen had such an acceptable result tying with Hansen and Peter Heine Nielsen.

Krasnodar was the venue of the 6th stage of the Cup Russia Grand Prix. The tournament ended in a three way tie between Pavel Tregubov, Sergey Dolmatov and Sergei Rublevsky on 6.5. Sharing 4th on 6 points were 9 players including child prodigy Ruslan Ponomariov. Alexander Morozevich who at one time promised so much was one of the players tied for 13th place. GMs Alexander Shabalov, Dmitry Gurevich and Suat Atalik shared 1st-3rd with 6-1 scores in a 130 player field finishing on March 9th. Only those players who were USCF 2200 and higher (or had once been so rated) were invited, along with about a dozen junior players. The tournament was at the Hyatt Regency Oak Brook, a suburb of Chicago, IL. They won $3333 each. I have paper copy of the games in round bulletins. Since they were selling the bulletins at the event, the person inputting games said that they will not be distributed in disk format for a while. Nevertheless, certainly the key games should be reported and given in the games section.
British Chess Wunderkind, Luke McShane of Clapham, south London, regard as the UK's most promising junior since Nigel Short, has, at 13-years and two months become the youngest Briton to achieve the title of International Master of Chess. McShane scored his third and final IM performance at the Gelsenkirchen masters in Germany, over the Easter weekend, with one round to spare. After eight of the nine rounds, McShane had 5.5 points that included 2/4 against Grandmasters and 3.5/4 against weaker opponents.
His first IM norm was achieved in Scotland at the Caledonian Masters held in Edinburgh last December. The youngest player to achieve the International Master title was Judit Polgar, of Hungary, who achieved the accolade in 1989 when she was just 12 years and one month old. McShane's performance beats the record for youngest Briton to gain the title- held by Matthew Sadler- by more than a year. His career to date has been prodigious and he seems destined for the "glittering prize" of being a future contender for Gary Kasparov's crown. His performances have been vastly superior to those of Nigel Short at the same age.
Taught at the age of four by his grandfather, Luke won the British Under-Nine and World Under-10 titles before his ninth birthday. He was the youngest Briton to qualify for a world ranking and to beat a grandmaster. He has already competed twice with great success in the senior British championships'. His ambition is to become a grandmaster himself and avenge Short's 1993 horrific World championship defeat by Kasparov, whom McShane has already played twice. The first occasion was a speed game in 1993. The second, an Internet game last year, when he caught the world champion out, and from a superior position, blundered the game away. Afterwards Kasparov acknowledged that: "Luke was the brightest hope in British chess and has a far better chance of winning my title than Nigel Short". He is sponsored to the tune of 12,000 (sterling) per year by the hand-held computer company Psion, which has funded his travel to foreign tournaments, but more importantly, paid for the specialist chess coaching required IN HIS PROGRESSION towards a future World title bid.
McShane is one of four OUTSTANDING prodigies in his age group; which includes Lev Aronian of Armenia, and Ruslan Ponomarov of the Ukraine. But perhaps the best of all is Etienne Bacrot of France, who only last week at the tender age of just 14 years and 2 months entered the annals of chess history by becoming the youngest player to achieve the title of Grandmaster. Like Luke, he also learned chess aged just four and was a member of his local chess club at five. Success quickly followed in his trail, when in 1995, he won the World Under-12 title in Brazil and became an International Master last May.
Rounds 9 and 10 of the 4 Nations Chess League were held in Rotherham Yorkshire last weekend. Nigel Johnson sends the results and a selection of games.

The New York Open starts on April 2nd with 51 Grandmasters entered already. It promises to be a great event.
The European Team Championships in May will be covered at this excellent site.
Marcel Lafosse sends news of the final standings of the Belgian team championships. The event was close until the end with Rochade playing Tessenderlo in the final match of the season. Although the final score was overwhelming in favour of Rochade the match itself was tense and the result did not really reflect the closeness of the match.

My thanks to GM Ian Rogers for news of these two events.

Stephen Solomon tried for more than 5 hours to beat tailender Ewen Green in the final round and so achieve a perfect score, but without success. I am not sure of the category so I don't know if Paul Garbett scored his final IM norm.

The FIDE Congress due to be held in Norway has been cancelled. The Norwegian Federation were sceptical about the merits of holding the Congress especially as Morten Sand's standing within FIDE was lowered after the politics of the Yerevan Olympiad. Sand however was committed to the Congress and had raised much of the money required to hold the Congress. Nevertheless the Federation decided against hosting it and FIDE will decide in the next couple of months where the new venue will be.

By defeating last year's winner Jan Votava in the final round Sergej Kalinitschev decided this year's edition of this tournament in his favour. Chistopher Lutz could have joined him if he had managed to convert his advantage against Ognjen Cvitan.
