Back and fit but to one of the quietest for top class chess I have known. Next week there is a tournament in Ter Apel Holland a Category 17 event with Shirov, Khalifman, Van Wely, Jussupow, Huebner and Andersson from the 16th of March. As you will read in this issue there are a number of events coming up in the Netherlands and elsewhere. Hope you enjoy this issue.

The tenth and eleventh rounds of the German Bundesliga took place over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of March. The event is being lead by Solingen whose solid line-up includes Michael Adams, Artur Jussupow and Jeroen Piket. One of the more notable results is that of Rafael Vaganian. He has scored so far in this edition of the Bundesliga. Rounds 12 and 13 will be held 12th-13th April 1997. My thanks to Gerald Schendel for the results.

The 52nd Yugoslav Championships in Niksic ended in a four way tie. This tie will be resolved in the second half of April with a play-off held in either Novi-Sad or in Belgrade. Ivanisevic is still a Candidate master. He has one IM norm but not an IM or NM title. The tournament was very exciting with the lead changing in almost every round. That is very rare for Round Robin tournament. Many of the players had the chance for victory. This is probably the reason why many of the games finished with unexpected results, mistakes and blunders. The quality of the games was not the highest but there were a lot of new ideas.

The longest running series of chess matches is that between Oxford and Cambridge. On Saturday 1st March this year's event took place in the RAC Club in Pall Mall sponsored by Watson, Farley and Williams.
The event was won by Cambridge whose overall strength especially in depth has been too much for Oxford in recent years. The arbiter was Bob Wade who I thank for send the games.
Oxford were white on the odd numbered boards.

John Henderson sends news of various events from the UK.
Here is John Henderson's report to the event given last week. In addition he has sent most of the games from the event. He points out that the final round game of Julian Hodgson contains some errors which can't easily be corrected. I have cut off the game at move 40.
A total of 92 players, competed for the £5,000 prize money in the Delottie & Touche Jersey Chess Festival, held at the Hotel de Normandie, St.Heliers, Jersey from16-23 February.
IM Andrew Webster from Sutton was the shock winner of the Jersey Chess Festival, picking up the first prize of £1,500, following a last round win over WGM Susan Lalic. Webster, who ended the tournament with four straight victories following his round three defeat to tournament front-runner GM Bogdan Lalic, clinched the prize after the top board clash between GM's Lalic and Ward ended, strangely, in a 29 move draw. The result came as a bit of a shock as many thought that the Croatian GM had the better position and everything to play for and nothing to lose.
Ironically, Lalic's wife, Susan, decided to follow the same variation as her husband used to defeat Webster in the third round. Susan decision to exchange queens in an unbalanced position, where her husband elected to keep on, proved to be decisive. Webster's compensation for the sacrificed material proved more than sufficient in the resulting ending.
Webster's performance was all the more impressive as he was there in an official capacity as the coach to the ten strong BCF Youth Squad, only making a last minute decision to play in the tournament! His duties during the week involved, holding a 2.5 hr coaching session every morning, in the evenings help to prepare the squad for potential opponents and the general welfare and social activities of the squad.
Being pleased with the outcome of this years tournament, Deloitte & Touche, in conjunction with Channel Hotels and Jersey Tourism, have announced that next years tournament will have a total prize-fund of £7,000 (up £2,000 from this year). The first prize for the Open next year, which will be held one week later to coincide with the end of Cappelle la Grande, will be £2,500, compared to £1,500 this year.
Final scores:
1 IM Andrew Webster (£1,500) 6/7 2-3 GM Julian Hodgson, GM Bogdan Lalic (£450 each) 5.5 4-6 Martin Simons, GM Chris Ward, Kiernan Smallbone 5. Best Game prize (£100): Leighton Williams for his fourth round victory over Susan Lalic.

The Bulgarian top-grandmaster Veselin Topalov, 6th in the latest world ranking, is one of the eight participants in the Jubilee Crown Group of the 5th Lost Boys Chess Tournament in Antwerp. His Elo-rating of 2725 makes him the favorite to win this special group.
The other participating grandmasters are the winners of the previous four Lost Boys Tournaments: Loek Van Wely (Holland, 2645), Jeroen Piket (Holland, 2640), Viktor Korchnoi (Switzerland, 2635), Ivan Sokolov (Bosnia, 2615), Igor Novikov (Ukraine, 2580), Rongguan Ye (China, 2520) and Paul van der Sterren (Holland, 2515).
The quoted Elo-ratings are those of the Fide-list of the 1st of January 1997. The average rating is 2609, which makes the tournament Category 15 in the system used by the world chess federation FIDE.
Apart from the Jubilee Crown Group the habitual Open Tournaments are also scheduled. There are again three groups, with several renowned grandmasters participating in the A-group. The total prize fund of these open tournaments is 1 million Belgian Francs.
Last year more than 350 chess players participated in the pleasant ambiance of the Zuiderpershuis at the Waalse Kaai in Antwerp. This number is expected to be surpassed at the upcoming Jubilee Tournament.
The fifth Lost Boys Chess Tournament will take place from the 1st untill the 10th of August 1997.
The winners of the previous Lost Boys Chess Tournaments are:
1993 Piket, Korchnoi

My thanks to Fré Hoogendoorn of Schaaknieuws for the information .
Judit Polgar (Hungary), Vasily Smyslov (Russia), Loek van Wely (Netherlands) and Emil Sutovsky (Israel) have been invited to the Hoogeveen City Hall to play a 4-player double round robin from 11 to 17 October 1997. This will take place during the first VAM Chess Tournament, a new event that the foundation VAM Fonds and the Hoogeveen municipality will add to the Dutch chess calender.
Unique to this tournament is that the four grandmasters will be playing with glass chess pieces in a glass décor. The chess pieces and décor will be especially created for the tournament by Cees van Olst (glass artist and director of the Hoogeveen Glass Museum). Van Olst will make the chess pieces to the exact specifications of the official Staunton model. The idea for having a tournament using glass pieces originates with 'Glas-In', an annual event in October, during which all of Hoogeveen celebrates glass, glass technology, and glass art. The tournament will be held in October to emphasize the connection to the 'Glas-In' event.
Alongside the 4 player event, a Swiss Open Tournament will be held. A number of grandmasters will participate in this Open by invitation. Furthermore, a Swiss Open for club players and home players will be held. The prize fund for the 4 player will total 25.000 guilders (10.000 for the winner, 7.500 for second place, 5.000 for third place and 2.500 for fourth place). The winner will also receive an extra prize: a glass chess set, made by Cees van Olst. The VAM Tournament is made possible by a donation from the VAM Fund. Should the tournament be successful, then VAM has the intention of sponsoring similar events in 1998 and 1999. Other sponsors of the first event are: the Hoogeveen Municipality, Brink Assurantiën, Bouwbedrijf Bosman and Ruma Rubber."
The Far East Bank open is actually a misnomer, because it is not an open -you have to qualify for it via several regional tournaments all over the Philippines. This year 5 GMs (Torre, Wojtkiewicz, Djuric, Antonio and Balinas) joined 6 IMs (Mariano, Barcenilla, De Guzman, Bancod, Nadera and Ramos) and all the top guns of Philippine chess plus the regional qualifiers to vie for the P200,000 first prize (around US $7,700).
This tournament is usually held in November but last year's edition was postponed because the Philippines was hosting the Asian-Pacific Economic Council summit (APEC). GM Eugenio Torre is the defending champion.
