Along with everyone else who helped out on this issue. The Linares Tournament dominates a busy week for chess. An exciting finish is in view with the likely winners coming from the leaders Vladimir Kramnik and Gary Kasparov. Judit Polgar's excellent showing so far perhaps indicates a maturing of style but she has quite a difficult finish to the event. Kasparov has played some extremely strong opening ideas and in fact might have been even further in the lead had he not wasted a number of good chances so far. He has had only one nasty moment, against Jeroen Piket. Piket missed 32. Rcxf3 which would probably have left Kasparov struggling. However as Margeir Petursson has pointed out Kasparov missed a spectacular conclusion to the game with 40. ...Rc7 fatally overloading Piket's Queen and leading to immediate victory. Also 38. ...Bf4 seems very strong to me. Against Gelfand, Kasparov allowed Gelfand to get to a Bishops of opposite colour ending when he could have won. However in the last two days he has demolished both Topalov and Nikolic to join Judit Polgar and Vladimir Kramnik in the lead. Kramnik has been quietly effective in garnering his points so far. He beat Vassily Ivanchuk to join the leaders. Judit Polgar has played some very impressively controlled chess so far. Her mature realisation of her endgame advantage against Dreev may suggest some work at this, the previously weakest part of her game. She enjoyed some luck in her first round game against Nikolic which fluctuated wildly before she won. I don't believe she can win the event as she has an exceptionally tough run in to the end of the event but she looks set to record a very good result. The major talking point of the event has been Vassily Ivanchuk's dismal play. His loss against Judit Polgar was very bad play with his 7. ...Nc3 already being quite wrong. The following round, after the first rest day seemed on the surface to see him play better however the facts of the game suggest otherwise. According to Kevin O'Connell on the ChessBase (http://www.chessbase.com/) site he spent "18 minutes over his second move and had used up more than an hour before the game reached double figures. Ivanchuk made at least 22 moves in less than a minute, as he had to do to avoid losing on time." Today he lost to Vladimir Kramnik and appeared to crumble after getting a reasonable opening. He has lost all his games with white (now 4 in total) In an interview with Dmitrije Bjelica on the chess.net site (http://www.chess.net/linares.html)after his loss to Judit Polgar, the key part of his interview was the statement that he was "sick of chess: I declare I will give up chess for at least one year." As three time winner he felt he should play Linares having signed a contract. He acknowleged how unrecognisable his play was against Judit Polgar. "Polgar is a great talent, but I was not myself for that game. I have not been myself for a while..." He is at a loss as to explain his play. He finds he cannot see anything at the board or concentrate properly. This event is going to be hard for him. The article contains other interesting background material from the event. Letter from Luis Rentero to Anatoly Karpov ------------------------------------------ Anatoly Karpov has lost his election campaign, an election which in truth he had no chance of winning. According to the Russian Information Agency the election was won by favourite Alexander Korzhakov who was former head of the Presidential Security service until he fell out with Boris Yeltsin. He is now a supporter of Alexander Lebed. Karpov's campaigning was affected by his participation in the Las Palmas tournament and this may have cost him a better result. There were 11 Candidates for the seat of Tula Top three: Alexander Korzhanov 26.32% Eduard Pashchecheko 16.98% Anatoly Karpov 15.81% However the consequences of non-participation in the Linares event may have a more long term effect. He was on the receiving end of a vitriolic attack from Linares and Ubeda organiser Luis Rentero. He was very upset at Karpov's non-participation at Linares and accuses Karpov of not even answering his invitations to the event. However Karpov released his plans for the coming months in a press release in December and that mentioned his campaign in Tula but nothing of participating in Linares. Here is Rentero's letter: Luis Rentero-Suarez Linares Linares February 3rd 1997. Anatoly Karpov Moscu I never could even imagine that you were going to be able to do what you have done at Linares. You have laughed at its people and at its children, who think you are an idol. And also, you have laughed at its confidence. And why am I telling you all of this? Last May, the City Government of Linares gave you a pre-contract to play in the International Linares Tournament. The people of Linares are most proud of this International contest. Your not responding at all, is, no doubt, an insult to the people of Linares. After seven months, you have not had the courtesy to even give us an answer. Furthermore, the Government of the City of Linares sent you three more fax's in January, requesting from you the courtesy of an answer: "Are you going to play or not?" But your irresponsibility and your indifference are such that you have given silence as the only answer. And I ask myself, why do you do it? Because you are afraid! Or is it because the famous chessplayer called Kasparov is playing at Linares? It is well known that he gave you your biggest beating in years. When you lost in Canary Islands to Kasparov, your ranking fell to the last position, making you look foolish after your boasting. Because you are afraid, you don't want to suffer the second fulminating defeat in you life. You are hiding behind yourself and not facing the consequences as a man. You are proud of being the World Champion when it isn't true! You got the title through the side door, but it seems you have experience with this, since you did the same thing with Fischer the first time. But I'm curious to know, how are you going to sell you match against Kasparov for 400 million pesetas? In fact, all the sponsors were waiting for you reappearing in Linares. By not competing in Linares, the consequence is that the Cabildo Insular will not sponsor you. You don't have any other tournament against your tormentor, the real World Champion, Garry Kasparov. Don't forget, now you are not the number three or even number four in the standings. With your last disastrous games in the Canary Island, they have checkmated you, sending you to the bottom. Summing up, I write you this letter to let you know, I will never invite you to any other competition which I organize, because you have insulted me and the people of Linares. Regretfully, you are now in the group that I call "BAD PERSONS." Sincerely yours Luis Rentero 3) Ubeda Tournament ------------------- Just a few miles away from the Linares SuperGM tournament is the Category 16 Ubeda Tournament. Letter from Ignatious Leong --------------------------- Ignatious Leong gives his account of the FIDE Congress in Yerevan. He was one of the most important players during the elections. 67th FIDE CONGRESS, Yerevan 1996 by Ignatius Leong (former FIDE Administrative Manager) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fax : (65) 2355303 Email : intchess@pacific.net.sg Many reports had been written on the Internet concerning the FIDE Congress in Yerevan. There had been various comments written about me; I resigned, I was fired, I decided to support Bachar Kouatly etc ... At the request of several people, I feel that my Statement which was read at the General Assembly should be published. I also wish to add some comments pertaining to this report and in particular to the events that happened only on 30 September and 1 October 1996. Statement of Ignatius Leong This Statement, recorded by Herman Hamers, was taken on 1 October 1996 from 0100 to 0200 hours at Hotel Armenia I, Yerevan, Armenia. Present were : Ignatius Leong (Delegate, Singapore Chess Federation) Tang Kum-Foo (Executive Secretary, Singapore Chess Federation) Herman Hamers (President, Dutch Chess Federation) Steven Doyle (Delegate, US Chess Federation) Mr Ignatius Leong had resigned yesterday as FIDE official (Administrative Manager). After the coffee-break during the General Assembly (30 September 1996), FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov asked Leong to come to a conference room (Iljumzhinov's office at the Congress Hall). Iljumzhinov was angry and upset that Leong voted against Iljumzhinov's proposal. He demanded three proxies that Leong carried and demanded also that Leong gave Iljumzhinov the vote of Singapore by writing a proxy in Iljumzhinov's name Leong met Mr Tang Kum-Foo in the building and apologised that he could not come to the meeting. Leong went to the playing hall; Tang went to the Conference Room (Congress Hall). He (Tang) sat near the Chinese delegation, asking their protection. After the end of the meeting both men (Tang and Leong) left. They arrived in their hotel at 2115 hours. Two people from Iljumzhinov came and invited them to come along to talk to the President of FIDE. Leong then had a two-hour talk with Iljumzhinov. Iljumzhinov told Leong that Mr Bachar Kouatly stated in the General Assembly that Iljumzhinov wanted to kill Leong. [Such a statement was not made (Mr Hamers and Mr Doyle confirmed this)]. Iljumzhinov told Leong he could come to the General Assembly and he would get his proxies back, including the vote of Singapore. Leong left; he did not get his proxies back then. After this talk Tang and Leong had supper. They didn't want to sleep in their own hotel rooms. They did not feel safe there. They were lodged then in Hotel Armenia I [instead of Armenia II]. Mr Steve Doyle called the American Ambassador and asked for protection for the two Singaporean delegates. Leong stated that no physical force was used and that the Armenian authorities were in no way involved. The three proxies mentioned were from Mongolia, Pakistan and Seychelles. End of Statement Some Comments : On 29 and 30 September 1996, I sat in the first row of the Congress Hall. After the two stormy morning sessions, I told Tang Kum-Foo of my intention to resign as FIDE Administrative Manager. At lunch-break I prepared my letter of resignation and showed it to Tang but he advised me to wait. However, just before resumption of the afternoon session, I went up to the stage and handed Iljumzhinov my letter of resignation. I then sat among the delegates. When the session resumed, votes were taken on the following motions : 1. To have individual elections :I voted YES 2. To elect a ticket of eight :I voted YES 3. To elect the President and allow him to select his own ticket:I voted NO Following the third voting, a coffee-break was called. Then I was called to Iljumzhinov's office where I saw many people there including Florencio Campomanes, Andrei Makarov and Georgios Makropoulos. Iljumzhinov took me to an inner room. According to the Yerevan Minutes, it was recorded that '... Iljumzhinov who was not happy with Mr Leong's vote and allegedly asked Mr Leong to give back the proxies and that of Singapore.' These were not so as per the statement read by Hamers. Iljumzhinov was very angry. He kept pointing his finger on my chest and demanded to have my proxies of Mongolia, Pakistan, Seychelles and to assign the vote of Singapore and to reassign them to four Central Asian countries. I wish to clarify that I had written in pri After reassigning my proxies, I went back to the Congress Hall to take my bag and look for Tang. I apologised to Tang because I had assigned the proxy of Singapore. He was angry but understood the situation. I told him that I would feel safer in the playing hall. The Yerevan Minutes also recorded 'Mr Iljumzhinov said that Mr Leong apologised to him and that Mr Kouatly exerted pressure on him regarding the vote. Mr Iljumzhinov said that Mr Leong had lived in Mr Iljumzhinov's house in Kalmykia and was ashamed of the situation and that is why he handed out his proxies and left the house.' How ridiculous. Firstly, despite the pressure during the 1994 Moscow Elections, I remained on the ticket of Kouatly. Despite the sense of insecurity, I voted (openly) the way I did in Yerevan. Anybody can exert pressure on me but no one - not even the mafia in FIDE can force me to vote against my will. Secondly, during my stay in Kalmykia, I had never lived in Iljumzhinov's house. During the World Championship Match, I lived in the hotel just like other officials did. After the Match, I insisted and paid for my own flat w When we returned to the hotel, I received a note from Gunther Loewenthal (Delegate, Dutch Chess Federation) to go back to the Congress Hall. I ignored the note and we went to my room. Within a few minutes, two men were sent by Iljumzhinov. I hesitated to go with them unless Tang could come with me. Soon after we entered Iljumzhinov's room, Tang was asked to wait outside the room. We talked for two hours. Iljumzhinov apologised for his impulsive behaviour and blamed Bachar Kouatly for instigating me. He persuaded me to continue working with him and also offered me business opportunities. I reminded him of my suggestion of meetings to hand out gifts to the Olympiad teams and players, delegates, arbiters and journalists and that he would win the election by himself. I stressed to him that I did not like the methods used in the election campaign in Yerevan and that at no time did I sa I decided to have dinner with Tang but instead, came across Kouatly and Makropoulos at the hotel lobby. Just as we were about to leave, we ran into Steven Doyle (USA), Herman Hamers (Netherlands), Rolf Lininger (Switzerland), Jaime Sunye-Neto (Brazil) and Mrs Rosa Durao (Portugal). Doyle, Hamers and Liniger came to us to request my statement of what actually happended and offered the assistance of their respective embassies. Tang said we shall consider their request and thanked them for their offer. We met Doyle and Hamers again at about 0100 hours on 1 October. They persuaded me to attend the General Assembly to make a statement. I requested Hamers to record my statement and to speak on my behalf. I stated what happended when I was first called to Iljumzhinov's office during coffee-break. I briefly mentioned what transpired in Iljumzhinov's room. I told Doyle and Hamers that Iljumzhinov told me in his room that Kouatly stated in the General Assembly that Iljumzhinov wanted to kill me. Doyle, Hamers a I requested assistance to fly out of Yerevan because I had no ticket and that I had arrived from Moscow on a cargo plane carrying Iljumzhinov gifts. Tang requested to have a new ticket so as to avoid the Moscow connection. Doyle offered to assist with the purchase of the tickets and to arrange for the American Embassy to escort us until our departure from Yerevan. The session of the General Assembly on 1 October 1996 started late. I was requested by Campomanes to make my statement. I informed the General Assembly that I had told my story the previous night to Hamers and that he would read my statement. I further said that Iljumzhinov persuaded me to continue my work but since my life had already been threatened in Moscow in August and with this new situation, I do not see how we could continue again. Nevertheless, I wished my friend Iljumzhinov good luck. I also str The Yerevan Minutes further recorded that 'Mr Makropoulous ... said that the story changed from mouth to mouth, and only Messrs Leong and Iljumzhinov can clarify what happened ... Mr Makropoulous said that he asked Mr Leong what happened and that he replied : Nothing, a misunderstanding.' Little had I known that this little diplomatic reply, which I had given him the night before to brush him off, would be trundled out and used against me. How those who worked at night, to use Makarov's phrase, clutched at After casting my votes (for Mongolia and Singapore), I left without sitting through the Congress. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Doyle, Hamers and Rolf Liniger (Switzerland) for offering their assistance during the short period of my distress. I also wish to thank the many other delegates who showed their concern for my safety. 5) Final leg of the VISA Nordic Grand Prix. -------------------------------------------- The 5th Visa Nordic Grand Prix. This is not an official list it is merely a report of progress. However the ratings also show corrections. Michael Adams' rating of 2665 is a correction from the originally published January 1997 list. This increase meant that the event could be the category 19 event they wanted. They may have had to swap one of the lower rated players in the Ubeda event to the main event if this had not been the case. Eliskases was born in Innsbruck Austria and at the age of 16 tied for the national championships held in his home town. His best result of his career was in Noordwijk 1938 where he was first above Keres and Euwe. His career development came to a halt with the start of the Second World War. He remained in Argentina on the outbreak of hostilities. He represented Austria in his first three Olympaids, Germany in the 1939 Olympiad and Argentina post-war. He was given the title of GM in 1952. Jack Peters reports that Eliskases was one of only four players to beat both Fischer and Capablanca. His main contributions to theory were in the endgame in which he could display extremely fine touch. 11) In brief -------- Italy ----- There is going to be a correspondence open tournament called the COPPA ITALIA. The event is sponsored by the monthly chess magazine L'Italia Scacchistica. It is dedicated to the memory of Giovanni Ferrantes, the previous editor of the magazine: he was the editor for 46 years, between 1946 and 1992. He died in 1995. There will be continuous preliminary groups of 5 players (double round) or 9 players. Qualification for the final is either First in the 5 player groups or First two in the 9 player groups. The preliminary groups start whenever the required entries are received. Finals start whenever the qualified players are received. The finals will have progressive number. The entry fee is 20 US dollars per group, stating which group you wish to play (5 or 9 players) payable by Eurocheque or International Post Account to L'Italia Scacchistica, via Lamarmora 40, 20122 Milano. India ----- The 8th Goodicke International open tournament is taking place in the Gorky Sadan in Calcutta. After 3 of the 11 rounds: Vadim Zviagentsev, Mihail Marin, Nguyen Anh Dung 3.0 Levitt, Bischoff, Ehlvest, Komliakov, Ziaur Rahman 2.5 12) Mermaid Beach Club International 1997 ------------------------------------- Julian Hodgson leads the Mermaid Beach Club International after nine of the eleven rounds. Second placed Alexandre Leseige looks almost certain to score his second GM norm. His last norm was also scored at Venice Beach. My thanks to Malcolm Pein for the round 9 updates. John Donaldson leads the IM tournament. The source of the other games was the Quebec chess www page. Unfortunately there were no round 4 games. I have had to fill in the results from the round 9 standings. I will try and get the remaining games of the event which has finished now for next week. Bermuda I-II 1997 cat. Beating off challenges from Athens, Barcelona, Glasgow, Madison and Wisconsin, London won the right to hold the cerebral challenge of the century this summer with budding Einsteins and mind sport champions from around the world competing in the first Mind Sports Olympiad - a revolutionary new global competition, featuring all of the top "thinking" Mind Sports - at the Royal Festival Hall from 18 to 24 August. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals along with cash prizes will be awarded for the first time to the brain champion, adults and juniors alike, who can outwit, out-think and outmanoeuvre their adversaries across a range of over 30 mental skills. Backgammon, Bridge, Chess, Computer Programming, Crossword Puzzles, Draughts, Go, IQ Tests, Memory Performance, Mental Calculations, Monopoly, Scrabble, Shogi and Speed Reading, to name but a few of the activities that competitors can display their cerebral skills on. Anyone in the world will be eligible to take part and due to the scheduling they can compete in not just one, but several tournaments. The format for most events will be the Swiss system, which allows play in every round, with no contestant being knocked-out before the end of the competition. A particular feature of the Mind Sports Olympiad, which has been secured by the Royal Festival Hall each year until the millennium, will be the Decamentathlon. This will be the ultimate cerebral challenge and will give the most ambitious and the highest IQ competitors the opportunity to pit their wits over not just one, but ten different mental skills. Mind Sports Olympiad creator and former Scottish chess champion, David Levy, a world expert in Poker, computer programming and chess computers, says: "Mind Sports' accessibility has been revolutionised by modern technology and ease of accesses to the Internet. We have seen an explosive growth in physical sports in the 1980's and 1990's. Now, with increased leisure time and more people working from home, Mind Sports will be the great growth area into the new millennium, the Century of the Brain." The Internet will play a big part in the Olympiad, with latest statistics from the 1997 edition of (I-ON) The Economist Pocket World in Figures (I-OFF) showing that an on-line Computer is available to 18.2 per 100 households in the UK (compared to 31.9 per 100 in the USA), means that thousands of entrants will be able to compete against each other via the Net - with true equality of opportunity, no discrimination due to geographical position, age, race or physical disabilities. The organisers were greatly encouraged by the response to last years momentous chess clash between Garry Kasparov and IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, which attracted over 5 million hits on its Internet site in the space of just six hours - a world record, dwarfing the virtual audience for Wimbledon, the British Open Golf Championship, the Football World Cup or the US Superbowl. IBM are quietly optimistic that, this May, they will see the figure doubling when Kasparov and Deep Blue stage the re-match at "The Millennium" in New York. Olympiad co-organiser, and best selling author on the brain, Tony Buzan, former editor of Mensa's (I-ON) International Journal (I-OFF) and founder of The Brain Foundation, says: "In this Decade of the Brain there are over a billion people around the planet already competing in Mind Sports, either alone, one-to-one or via the Internet. Its time that this fact was acknowledged. The accent will be on fun, but the event will also be highly educational, promoting logical thinking and competitive virtues. We expect child prodigies as young as eight, and veteran masters of eighty, to be crossing mental swords in August." Entries and game information for interested competitors or spectators can be obtained from: David Levy on 0171-485-9146 (fax: 0171-482-0672) or the Mind Sports Olympiad web site: (B-ON) http://www.mindsports.co.uk/ (B-OFF). 14) Theoretical Corner By Marco R.
