1) Introduction
----------------
The next few weeks should see some absolutely mouthwatering chess. The
Wijk aan Zee tournament looks certain to produce a high number of decisive
games and Spain is set to organise two excellent tournaments at the start of
next month (what would we do without Spanish Chess sponsorship.)
My thanks to the Lost Boys site, Gerald Schendal, Chess Planet, Pablo Rodriguez,
Christophe Bouton, Leif Gronqvist, Jon Tisdall, Vladimir Dvorkovich, the BCF,
Graziano Ottolini, Maran Walter, Argiris Kotsis, Bertrand Weegenaar , Marco Martini
and Massimiliano Orsi.
I hope you enjoy this issue.

2) Hoogovens tournament Wijk aan Zee.
----------------------------------
Jeroen Piket leads after two rounds of the Hoogovens Tournament in Wijk
aan Zee. The first round was amazingly bloodthirsty with all the games
being decisive. In addition all four Dutch players won. Nigel Short
appeared on the way to a spectacular victory against Alexander Onischuk
before ruining it just before the first time control. He won a long
ending against Loek Van Wely in round two in which he stood worse but
Loek overpressed. Igor Glek has lost both his games on time. The event
looks as though it will a lively one with several players of
uncompromising chess.
There is live coverage at: http://lostcity.nl/chess/hoogovens/
which is the Lost Boys chess homepage. They will have coverage of the B
Tournament starting tomorrow, the 21st of January. This should also be
an interesting event with the main focus being on whether youngster
Etienne Bacrot can build on his demolition of Vassily Smyslov in a six
game match and his excellent showing at the Yerevan Olympiad. He will
not be the only young player as Dao gets his chance to show what he can
do also.
The players are: Bacrot, Riemersma, Van der Sterren, Van der Wiel,
Atalik, Cifuentes, Dao, David, Janssen, Kalinin, Nijboer and Peng.

3) Michael Adams vs Ivan Morovic Fernandez in Santiago, Chile.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Michael Adams has travelled to Santiago to play local Grandmaster Ivan
Morovic. Adams will be looking to regain some of the rating points he
lost at Hastings whilst he had flu during the first four rounds. He
started well winning after Morovic horribly misplaced his rook in taking
Adams' a-pawn.
Pablo Rodriguez has sent the first game of a total of six to be between
the 16th and 22nd January.

4) Top class chess in Spain
------------------------
Spain is becoming the number one home for elite chess. February will see
two strong events running almost side by side (they are only 25km
apart).
XIV Cuidad de Linares International Chess Tournament
----------------------------------------------------
The Las Palmas tournament seems to have cleared the way for elite events
involving all the top players. The XIV Linares tournament looks set to
rival the Las Palmas tournament. It will have all six players that
competed in that event plus some of the strongest other players in the
World. One surprise is the presence of Vassily Ivanchuk in the field. He
withdrew from the Hoogovens event currently taking place and it was
reported that he would not compete in Linares. He said that he was
considering a sabbatical after his disappointing result in Spain.
Karpov's performance at Linares may be key in getting top sponsorship
for the projected Kasparov vs Karpov World title reunification match. If
Karpov were to have a second consecutive failure after his last place in
Las Palmas the interest in a potentially horrible mismatch could be low.
Nevertheless it would be extremely foolish to write off Karpov just yet.
Incidently the event runs from February 3rd - 17th which includes a date
when Karpov is supposed to be standing for election to the Russian Duma.
This must place in some doubt his participation in the event although I
was told by one source that some extremely heavy pressure was put on him
to participate. [Karpov is reported to have said on chess.net last night
(Monday night) that he never signed any agreement to play in Linares and
won't be there.]
The players named are from a fax direct from the organisers so one would
hope that there will be no absentees at the event itself.

1st Cuidad de Ubeda International Tournament
---------------------------------------------
This is almost a Linares B tournament. It runs from February 7th to the
21st which overlaps with the Linares event. Of a lower category it
nevertheless has brought together a fascinating field. Almost all the
players have played in previous editions of the Linares event.
In addition an international open starts on February 20th.

5) Linares Open Tournament
--------------------------
Christophe Bouton sends news and games from the Linares Open. The event
was won by Giorgi Georgadze ahead of such pre-tournament favourites as
Artur Yusupov and Alexander Khalifman. Rapidly improving American talent
Tal Shaked scored a GM norm, achieving this with a victory over Yusupov
in the final round. This is the fourth open event in the town more
famous for the Super Grandmaster event.

There was a Category 9 Tournament played in Goteborg Sweden between the
7th and 15th of January. Held in the Hotel Excelsior the event was won
by Evgeny Gleizerov the ELO favourite.

7) Chess and Politics
------------------
It seems that Russian politics and chess go hand in hand more than at
any time before. FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov is President of
Kalmykia, a Russian Republic. He along with Kasparov, Makarov and Karpov
supported Boris Yeltsin in his recent Presidential election campaign.
With the illness of Yeltsin there will be a re-allignment. General
Alexander Lebed was the big winner in the Presidential elections. Lebed
had no chance of winning last but his high profile campaign briefly won
him a place in Yeltsin's Government. He recently left the Government but
now his popularity has risen especially after his high profile political
intervention in Chechnia. He will be looking to become the next
President. Perceived as very extreme he has recently tried to moderate
his image and align himself with a broad range of popular figures and
parties in Russia. Gary Kasparov was called by Lebed and they met. He
managed to impress Kasparov and now there is a possibility that Kasparov
will have a place within his party. Lebed when he visited Germany said
that "in some circumstances" he might work with Moscow Mayor Yurii
Luzhkov, eye surgeon Svyatoslav Fedorov and Gary Kasparov. Whether his
involvement is as heavy as the Lebed quote on the Chess Planet page is
unclear "He's [Kasparov] taking care of the theory and the program of
my party".
Anatoly Karpov is standing for election to the Duma in the constituency
of Tula where the elections are to be held on February 9th.
Changes in the Russian political landscape could have quite an effect on
top level chess. Andre Makarov and Kirsan Iljumzhinov's political power
may depend on their relations with Yeltsin's successor. Kasparov may
have serious political ambitions and obviously Karpov also harbours some
ambition too. Also there are a large number of people getting seriously
rich in Russia, it could be that further patronage for tournaments may
come from that direction. (Thanks to Gerald Schendal for some
interesting material)
8) PCA WORLD CHESS RANKING Top 50 players.
---------------------------------------
Produced by Ken Thomson with ChessBase Calculated by Vladimir
Dvorkovich, Chess Union Int.
Columns: rank, name, nationality, rating, variance. The last column,
variance, gives the tendency of players to be solid or vary in their
performance. The average variance for top players is 180. Higher
numbers denotes players who tend to vary more, lower numbers are
players who are solid and reliable.

10) Keith Arkell wins the Leigh Grand Prix.
-----------------------------------------
Keith Arkell won the 3000 pound Leigh Grand Prix. The first prize was
only finally settled after the Islington Chess Congress finished in
December. Keith Arkell was overhauled in 1995 by Matthew Sadler in 1995
at the same congress. This year whilst Arkell was playing his challenge
match against Jonathan Rowson, Mark Hebden tried to score 5/5 at
Islington to take the prize. He started with 3/3 but fell short with two
draws in the end.
Leigh Grand Prix Prize Score (Max. 200)
1.Keith Arkell 3000 195.1
2.Mark Hebden 1200 193.7
3.Michael Adams 700 192.2
4.Bogdan Lalic 400 188.2
5.Andrew Ledger 400 175.2
The sponsors are Leigh Interests a Walsall based environmentalist and
international waste management firm. The circuit contains the vast
majority of UK Chess Congresses from the large events such as Hastings
to the local one day events. Extra points are available for the most
valuable events so that it is worth players such as Michael Adams
competing in certain congresses with a good chance of taking the final
Grand Prix. This year his attempt to take the title was halted by Mark
Hebden who defeated Adams in Preston. This was still sufficient for
Adams to take 3rd place in the standings.
Michael Adams and Tony Miles have won the Grand Prix four times, Keith
Arkell,.John Nunn, Jim Plaskett and David Rumens (he made heavy use of
1. e4 c5 2. f4).
