Einarsson, David Japaridze and Marco R. Martini for their help this week. A wide range of chess this week with a strong rapidplay commemorating what would have been Paul Keres' 81st birthday and games from Pamplona and Reggio Emilia (I did make them available earlier in the week in a midweek column on my page. This will be an occasional column to try out a few new ideas.) I have had some nice feedback this week, especially about the review of the year and a few suggestions. A number of people have suggested that I introduce a letters page. I certainly welcome feedback but I would not want to get into the situation of people being upset if I did not publish their letters and so forth. But if I do receive letters of wider interest I will look at it again. Next week sees the start of the 1997 super GM season. We will see in short order Wijk aan Zee, Linares and Dos Hermanas (early this year) should be great. If anyone is at the Linares open I would be interested in results and then games from there. Hope you enjoy this issue. Mark 2) Keres Memorial Rapidplay 1997. -------------------------------- Mart Tarmak reports on the Keres Memorial Rapidplay held in Tallinn this weekend. The Estonian sports society "Kalev" has organised the Paul Keres Memorial Rapid tournament for seven consecutive years. Paul Keres was born on January 7th 1916 and this tournament was devoted to his 81st birthday. The organisers invited the third and the fourth best female players (Pia Cramling and ex-world champion Maia Chiburdanidze) to this years tournament. Other invitees to the main tournament were GMs Ulf Andersson and Viktor Gavrikov. Also the Estonian GMs Jaan Ehlvest and Lembit Oll were included into the final without qualification. The thinking time in the event was 25 minutes per player. The event started with the qualification tournament for 40 participants on Friday, January 10. The highest rated player in both the qualification event and the final was Ulf Andersson He wished to play in the qualification tournament. He was amongst the 5 qualifiers: Riho Liiva (EST), Oleg Krivonosov (LAT) 5,5, Ulf Andersson (SWE), Vidmantas Malisauskas (LIT), Kalle Kiik (EST) 5. Both Estonian IMs were not the members of the Olympic team in Yerevan but they continued to play well also in the main tournament which was played on Saturday and Sunday, January 11-12. Incidently the new amateur World Champion Olev Schults also participated in the qualification event. The best starter was Riho Liiva who has 3 out of 3. He had difficult positions and time trouble againt leading Estonian chessplayers Ehlvest and Oll but managed to win both games. In the third round Ulf Andersson erred with his move order in the opening and had to resign immediately. After that the clear leader was Viktor Gavrikov who had 5.5 points after six rounds and it seemed that he would be an easy winner. But he did have a few scares. After his draw with Krivonosov he lost to Oll and probably had a lost position against Chiburdanidze in the last round where he was the exchange down. He managed to draw the game and as his nearest rival Liiva did the same he hung on to first place. Igor Glek, Julio Granda Zuniga, Miguel Illescas, Alex Yermolinsky, Victor Korchnoi, Joel Lautier, Predrag Nikolic, Jeroen Piket, Valery Salov, Nigel Short, Ivan Sokolov, Jan Timman, Loek Van Wely and Alexander Onischuk play. In the end Vassily Ivanchuk has carried out his promise made at the end of the Las Palmas tournament to withdraw from tournament play for a while. He withdrew at the last minute from the Hoogovens event and also from Linares which follows on almost directly from this event. He was replaced in Wijk aan Zee by Alex Yermolinsky. 4) Three way tie in Pamplona. -------------------------- Spain rounded off a brilliant year for top class chess with a Category 12 event in Pamplona. Last year there were high profile events in Madrid, Dos Hermanas, Leon and Las Palmas. This year will see the return of the Linares tournament and Las Palmas is one of the possible venues for the Kasparov-Karpov match. Pamplona saw Zoltan Almasi, Jonathan Speelman and Zurab Azmaiparashvili shared first place. The event was interesting for the participation of Ruslan Ponomariov (an IM in the new ratin list). He was leading with 3.5/5 before losing to Almasi, Azmaiparashvili and Gulko in successive rounds. Nevertheless he scored a good result, especially considering that he is only 13 years of age. My thanks to Jesus De la Villa and Jon Speelman for the games. Pamplona (ESP), XII 1996 - I 1997 cat. The title of New Zealand Champion went to second placed Alex Kulashko who has recently qualified after 12 months of residence in New Zealand. International Master norms were achieved by Alex Kulashko and Paul Garbutt. The event was an 11 round Swiss with 22 players. There were two players from overseas, Ian Rogers and ZF Mohd from Malysia. Some points came out of it, and next year I might try and do something with the games of the year. Possibly soliciting opinions on the best of 1997. Massimiliano Orsi suggested I try and revive the Chess Oscars but it seems that Alexandr Roshal is already trying to do this. Below is a message sent to me this week via Vladimir GaspariantsDear chess friends! Last year "64 Chess Review" has restored the Chess Oskar for The best chess player of the year. That used to exist thanks to Jorje Puch. In the discussion of the matter took part more than 120 chess journalists and grandmasters from 35 countries. You are welcome to participate in this discussion this year. You can offer your own choice to Mr. Roshal personally or send a fax ((095) 202-0961 or E-mail chess@online.ru). 10-12 players of the year 1996 may be offered regardless of their previous chess achievements. Thanks in advance and looking forward to your cooperation. Alexandr Roshal Editor-in-Chief. Sincerely yours, Alexandr Roshal Editor-in-Chief. e-mail: chess@online.ru 10) TAPOLCA Open, Budapest and First Saturday News by Laszlo Nagy --------------------------------------------------------------------- The TAPOLCA Open held in Budapest finished on the 11th January.
