1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Alex Relyea, David Clayton, John Saunders, Mitko Iliev, Luiz Roberto Da Costa jr, and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The FIDE Candidates tournament start this week on Friday 11th March. In a surprise move the organisers AGON have said they will try and prevent websites other than their commercial partners rebroadcasting the games. I guess I wasn't the only one who thought "not this again" when I heard. This issue has come up many times, and gone to court on at least a couple of occasions. Most of us thought this issue was completely settled in favour of allowing rebroadcasting but here we are yet again. It is in the interest of chess as a whole that official websites be successful and generate money and interest for the game for its future. They have access to the players, live video feeds and the whole story of the match. I believe doing it right is the best way. No doubt AGON would make some extra money if the law was different, but it isn't. That's their commercial background. There are many laws I don't like but that's the way it is, but the rich go the legal route. For TWIC my main priority is to have all the games in a file at the end of the round and automating that by updating it during play makes my life easier. It's not worth it for me to test AGON's intent, being right in a legal case can still cost money. I doubt I'm the real target of this anyway. We'll have to see if any compromise is offered a feed with a delay would be fine for my purposes. It certainly ups the pressure on AGON to get their own coverage right.
