1) Introduction
---------------

Well after a week off work with flu, I'm back, just in time to produce
TWIC 11! Another interesting week in chess politics, the Olympiad
is going to be a thriller, but the Presidential election is sure to
rival it in interest. The top event of the week was the European
Team Championships. I have 5/6 of the games from the final but hopefully
other games will become available too, in particular Kasparov's loss
to Schneider in the semi-finals. Shay Bushinsky organised a blitz event
in Israel which was won by Judit Polgar, his report appears below.
Thanks too to Anjo Anjewierden for reporting the final leg of the Dutch
Championships semi-finals. Another first for TWIC is the studies competition
by Wlodek Proskurowski with a book prize for the winner. Just over a
week ago we had a wonderful evening at the chess club doing the studies
that he has posted to TWIC so far. Once again I'm left wondering what
I'm going to report on next week, something's bound to turn up!
Hope you enjoy this issue.

2) FIDE, PCA and the Kamskys
-----------------------------

Campomanes available.
---------------------

It is reported to me that Campomanes has generously made himself
available to be FIDE President for the next two years. I announce
here that I too will make myself available for the Presidency.
There surely has to be a new president.

The Kamskys comment.
---------------------

 Interview with Gata Kamsky
 By Larry Evans

(On Sunday we received a phone call from Gata Kamsky and
his father Rustam. These are their comments on my
interview with Bob Rice.)

"We had two lawyers but dismissed them because we feel
they took the side of PCA commissioner Bob Rice against
us.

"We received no precise information about my match with
Anand in Las Palmas from Bob Rice despite sending him
about 30 letters in the last two months. Finally on
November 14 he sent a response stating that the purse will
be $100,000 (instead of the previously announced $200,000)
and that the starting date 'probably' will be March 18.
But we need many more details, such as the conditions
offered by the organizers, how many seconds they will pay
for, hotel and travel expenses, etc. We don't have money
to pay our coaches until we receive an advance from the
organizers.

"I protest the reduction of the purse in my match with
Anand. We feel that Rice and Kasparov should pay the
difference out of their own pockets. They are rich people
and have an obligation to keep their word.

"Anand and I wanted to play in Linares this December.
Senor Rentero offered cash to pay for our coaches. But the
PCA turned this down.

"I will play in Las Palmas even if there is no prize --
provided the PCA guarantee in writing (like Campo) to pay
it in the future! But if FIDE merges with the PCA, which
seems likely now that Kasparov has endorsed Campomanes as
FIDE president for another four years, then I see no
reason to play Anand again. I already defeated him in the
FIDE cycle. I am totally opposed to any merger between the
PCA and FIDE because, until now, the PCA has broken its
word to us. They should remain separate at least until
they both finish the current championship cycles. Only
then is a Unification Match possible.

"Kasparov's endorsement of Campomanes is terrible. I think
that Kasparov wants to return to FIDE and be recognized by
them as World Champion because he doesn't see any money
coming from the PCA in the future. We don't trust
Kasparov. He voluntarily left FIDE, and if wants to return
he must first let the match cycles run their natural
course. So far Campomanes has kept his word to us, but we
don't think he has a right to be president of FIDE for
another four years.

"Senor Rentero offered to serve as president of FIDE
without any salary. We think he is the best man for the
job.

"Do you know about the scandal at the fourth and last
Intel Grand Prix in Paris? After the event in London,
Kramnik was leading with 13 points, followed by Anand and
Ivanchuk at 12 and Kasparov at 7. So even if Kasparov won
in Paris, he couldn't catch the leaders and be eligible
for the $100,000 bonus to the overall winner. So the PCA
broke its own rules and doubled the points in Paris. When
Kasparov won, this rule change enabled him to tie for
first with Kramnik at 19 and split the bonus. He would not
even have been in the top three because 7 plus 6 equals 13
(instead of 19).

"I didn't play in Paris because the invitation arrived at
the last minute and we were informed that players had to
pay their own travel costs. It was too expensive. So I
didn't go.

"In the actual title match, I don't feel it's fair for the
champion to keep his title on a tie. We feel he already
has a big advantage because he watches other players get
exhausted during the qualification cycle. We prefer a 24-
game match. In case of 12-12 tie then we should play
action games. 4-game tie break. If tied again, then
another 4 games. 30-minute games.

"Rice and Kasparov are acting like dictators. We sent two
letters to Intel. The first was in July. I tried to find
out how much we were playing for and complained about not
being invited to the Grand Prix in New York or London (at
the time I was rated number six on the PCA rating list,
even though my real rating should have been number two).
The second letter in October complained about the fact
that I was not paid my prize promptly after the Short
match was over. Now I will send a third letter if Bob Rice
does not respond by tomorrow (Monday the 21st).

"Intel did not answer us. We are grateful to them for
sponsoring these events, but we feel the money is going
into the wrong hands.

"I know that I am doing the right thing. I have nothing to
hide."

From Roustam Kamsky
To Bob Rice
Dated 18-Nov-94

Protest

On behalf of Gata Kamsky and myself I protest against the fact that the prize
for the Candidates Final Match was cut in half. Also there was no
confirmation in writing that GM Kamsky will be compensated or given similar
conditions as he had with Mr. Rentero.

One and a half years ago officially and publicly was announced and confirmed
later during qualificaiton matches that prize funds for all matches including
the Final will be $200,000 and for the World Championship match $3,000,000.
Garry Kasparov and you, Mr. Rice, are millionaires and directors of the PCA.
You must compensate the prize fund in order to save your honor. We spend too
much effort, energy, money, and time in order to win all qualificaiton
cycles. You did not proivide the exact date and conditions of the candidates
final and gave no guarantee of the payemnt neither to us no to organizers of
thematch in Grand Canaries. How much longer should we suffer against such
discriminatory actions? If you do not reply urgently, we will be forced to
appeal to the court against you, PCA [1].

Please keep direct contact with us, not through lawyers. If we will not find
the truth legally, then only because you are too smart and too sly, and God
will punish you.

If it were not for your unwillingness to cooperate during the earlier times,
we would never have displayed any personal problems which arised lately in
the press. You are conciously pushing us to act. Look at all the facts.

1. Rating issue
2. NY Grand Prix, hotel, publicity
3. match with Short, tricks
4. Delay of prize payment
5. Passing over in silence the critical information about Candidate's final
match prize, conditions, time, and so on. We can prove any of these facts by
supporting documents. How could you imagine anyone to behave after all these
things?

On all previous faxes we got no response, we also did not get any phone
conversations. As int he course of any business there must be written
answers. Through our lawyers we are fed up with your threats as well. After
few days, if there will be no answer, this protest will be forwarded to press.

[1] Remainder of sentence deleted at request of Roustam Kamsky
[2] Mr. Kamksy requested that I add that Gata has already signed firm
contracts to play in tournaments in Linares and Monaco, the dates of which
conflict with the PCA match. Also that no reply has been received from Rice
in writing, and no telephone calls have been answered, as of the time of this
post.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.
----------------------------

In "Russia Chess Rift Intensifies" the AP on November 25 reported that
Anatoly Karpov is conferring with hardliners in the Russian Parliament in
an attempt to have his allies -- instead of Gary Kasparov's faction --
declared leaders of the rightful Russian Chess Federation, which controls
funding and travel for their top players. Karpov has turned down
Kasparov's invitation to play in the Olympiad starting in Moscow next week
and "the State Duma plans to hold hearings on the current situation in
Russian chess," reported the AP.

(as reported by Larry Parr in a USENET posting.)

Kasparov
--------

What can one say about Kasparov? After years of denigrating Campomanes
he suddenly endorses him for a further term as FIDE president. Does
this mean that he was not telling the full truth about the scandal
of the aborted Karpov-Kasparov I match in 1984-5? This I don't know.
Kasparov doesn't appear to tolerate stability for very long, he always
wants to be doing something, anything, constructive or destructive.
His whole personality seems to be restless. To be fare this isn't
always a negative thing. I believe that his contacts got the money for
the Pula PCA open, the Moscow Olympiad and Novgorod. Also he played
for Sarajevo to show support for the people of that town. But he never
settles, one wonders what the state of his relationship with Bob Rice is.

It is said that there will be three "PCA Classics" tournaments next year.
Credit Suisse have said that they will change the dates of their event
to be one of these events. According to New in Chess the others look
likely to be Novgorod and Dos Hermanes. Can I be the only one to notice
that Linares is missing. Perhaps Kasparov doens't intend to play in Linares
at all next year. (there appears to be a fallout between Kasparov and
Rentero.)

In short it is all in the air. The PCA may or may not survive in its
current form next year, Campomanes may retain his presidency and reunite
the World Titles, Kasparov may find someone else to run his organisation.
Who can tell, these are strange times.

3) A Nigel Short Statement
---------------------------

As reported in TWIC 10 Nigel Short has, after extended negotiations
become part of the English Olympiad Team. He has withdrawn
his objections to Murray Chandler. In addition he released a joint statement
with the BCF containing the following comments:

The BCF recognises that Nigel Short made a significant contribution to the
increase in chess activity in England in 1993.

The BCF has never voted on any motion of censure of Nigel Short nor that
he should be banned from the England Team.

Nigel Short has on no occasion stated that he will never again play for
England.

Both sides reject the misinformation which has appeared in the media at
times during the past.

The Federation has consistently opposed the withdrawal of Nigel Short's
rating from the FIDE list, which it considered contrary to its statutes
at the time of its instigation.

Nigel Short was enthusiastic that his match with Kasparov would take place
in Manchester. Regretfully this was rendered impossible because of his
disagreement with FIDE.

Nigel Short recognises the view that chess in the North-West might have
benefited more as a result of the match being played in Manchester but,
as he made clear at the time, the arguement was with FIDE, not with
Manchester.

---
This Statement hopefully will draw a line under the whole events
surrounding the Kasparov - Short match last year. I don't see any
point in continuing the ill-feeling surrounding that match. What
is done is done. (Mark Crowther)

4) Intel World Chess Rankings
------------------------------

This might be the last list of its type before a deal with
FIDE. (Kasparov has talked about more frequent ELO lists issued
by FIDE if a deal happens). It certainly goes some way towards
addressing Kamsky's complaints as he moves up to a World ranking
of 3. Karpov has list a number of rating points down from 2788
to 2758. Kasparov is up from 2808 to 2813. Piket's number 7 ranking
reflects some recent triumphs, the question is: can he maintain his
form to remain a fixture in the elite of World's chess.

TOP TEN
-------
1. Kasparov 2813
2. Karpov 2758
3. Kamsky 2741
4. Anand 2738
5. Ivanchuk 2734
6. Salov 2699
7. Piket 2694
8. Shirov 2687
9. Kramnik 2679
10. Gelfand 2671

Top UK
------
17. Short 2637
20. Korchnoi (I know he isn't UK, but he is up from 55th to 20th)
21. Adams 2634
29. Hodgson 2619
34. Nunn 2616
36. Speelman 2614
83. Miles 2576
89. Watson 2573

5) Olympiad News
-----------------

The Hungarian Team for the Olympiad is :

1. Judit Polgar
2. Lajosh Portish
3. Alexander Chernin
4. Zoltan Almasi
5. Zoltan Ribli
6. Peter Leko

The team contains three juniors!
(as told to Shay Bushinsky by Alexander Chernin.)

The Dutch team has decided that Jan Timman will take
top board above the more highly rated Jeroen Piket.

6) STUDIES by Wlodek Proskurowski
----------------------------------

			    TWIC # 11

Mario Velucci and Joost de Heer expressed interest in retroanalysis.
In our two previous columns (see TWIC #9 & 10) we saw examples of
castling in studies, which already was off the usual track.
Retroanalysis in studies is completely exotic, but it so happened that
one of the themes for the 2nd World Team Match was retroanalysis,
a subject I knew nothing about. In spite of that I decided to
enter the competition since I designed a scheme `greatly original'
and on a `grand scale', as I naively imagined. [Of course, I knew
nothing about Sam Loyd's `Mate in 1' from Am. Chess Journal, 1876]
I spent an inordinate amount of time implementing my design.
What I finally created was a monster with twice as many pieces
as in any of my other endgames. My only excuse is that it
still is a decent study with some tension to the very end.

8) THE EUROPEAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
-----------------------------------

A few weeks ago I reported in TWIC one of the qualifying rounds
from the European Team Championships. The finals were held
in Lyon France. (I believe the dates were 17th-19th November
but I may be a day out either side.)

ROUND 1

Lyon 4.5-1.5 Kaise
Bosnia Sarajevo 3-3 Honved
[Bosnia through on tie break, based on Kasparov's quick win on
board one against Zoltan Almasi]
Novotronika 3.5-2.5 Reykjavic [Even without their board one Ivanchuk]
Beer Sheva 3.5-2.5 Novosibirsk [Key result was Yudasin beating
Dreev on board one]

ROUND 2

Beer Sheeba 3-3 Lyon
[Lautier's win against Yudasin on board one being the tie-breaker
in favour of Lyon. On board 1 Lautier agreed that Yudasin did not
have to record the game due to religeous restrictions on the Sabbath
but the arbiter disagreed, only the intervention of Kasparov allowed the
compromise that Yudasin had ten mins less on his clock but didn't
have to record his game.]

Bosnia Sarajevo beat Novotronika

I don't have the precise score but Schneider beat Kasparov on board
one. (I, and others! are actively seeking this game score!)

ROUND 3 FINAL
-------------
Bosnia Sarajevo 3-3 Lyon Oyannax

Kasparov 1/2 Lautier
I Sokolov 1-0 Anand
Nikolic 0-1 Bareev
Azmaiparashvili 1/2 Dorfman
Kurajica 1-0 Vaisser
Dizdarevic 0-1 Sharif

There seemed to be some confusion over the tie-breaking system.
In previous rounds it seemed to be the highest board to win
gave victory to that team, but that didn't seem to happen in
the final. (not sure of the board order, maybe Nikolic-Bareev
was the board two match)

These games were played just before the PCA Open in Pula. It saw
Donbass from the Ukraine qualify above Italian, Hungarian, Croatian,
and Rumanian teams. They were played in October.

9) The first PCA Open in Pula
-----------------------------

This event, in keeping with most PCA affairs was held in great
secret in Pula, Croatia. (forgive the sarcasm but I'm finding great
difficulty in finding out in advance about any PCA events.) It had
a prize fund of $20,000 and the first prize of $4500 was won by Vladimir
Tukmakov. (who in my mind will always be the first man to sit down and
play Bobby Fischer and be greated with 1. b3, one can imagine his thoughts ..
"Why me! He always plays 1. e4!")

FINAL SCORES

11) The IBM International Blitz Tournament - Nir Galim Israel
--------------------------------------------------------------
by Shay Bushinsky

I had the privilege to organize the IBM special international
blitz chess tournament held Nov. 26, 1994, at Moshav Nir-Galim, Israel.

The main feature of this tournament was the participation
of the renowned Polgar sisters from Hungary. The three sisters, who
are Jewish, have a special affinity for Israel. In fact Zsuzsa, the
oldest of the three had married a friend, Kobi Shutsman, three days
ago.

As honorary guest we had the Hungarian Cultural Ataches
Mr. Laszlo Dvorsky. Four of his country Olympic teams took part in the
event. Several hundred people attended which is a big audience
considering chess and the rather remote area the tournament was held
at.

The event expected or not was a one woman show: Judit Polgar's.
She dominated it from start finishing with a 2800 blitz performance
conceding only three draws to her sister Zsuzsa, her fellow Hungarian
team mate, Chernin and to the well known ICS blitzer Ronen Har-Zvi.
Judit described her blitz game as full of tricks and she does bring a
bag full of them. Add to that her personal charm and looks combined
"melting" her opponents. She decided her victory on round 14 beating
a very strong blitz player: GM Alexander Huzman who had trailed her all
the way through by a half a point.

Rest of the players had performed more or less according to
expectation. Yudasin, who lost to Judit on the first round was hanging
in as well. Milov in good form made several convincing wins while
Zsuzsa, the oldest of three Polgars showed she knows her
trade. Har-Zvi thought he could of done better conceeding a sure win
to Yudasin and totally losing nerve in a completely won position
against Zsofia Polgar.

One may point out two disappointments: Smirin & Chernin. For
Smirin who recently completed a record of three time qualification to
the PCA Grand-Prix events, had played some strange games under his
normal par. Chernin, seemed out of form as well. As the former
semi-finalist in the last world blitz championship (beating Karpov
amongst others), Chernin must of done better.

Zsofia Polgar started the tournament behind and just did not
come back. And last but not least the computer.

As you know I co-author Junior (ban over the ICS). I don't
feel any need to apologize for it's performance as its participation
in such a tournament was an achievement in itself. But,..., I had gone
through 2 terrible weeks trying to port it from PC to IBM RS/6000.
Point is I did not manage to do both: organize and program
successfully. We had to play without a real interface, making moves on
a regular board and clicking the opponent's all in 5
minutes. Incredibly we reached winning positions almost in every game:
namely we fell on time a bishop and a rook up against Judit, offered a
draw with a rook more against Psakhis, with a bishop more against
Alon Greenfeld and lost many others on time. First three games were
actually technical losses against: Soffer, Yudasin and Gruenfeld so we
reverted back to a PC.
So I believe that we will program it, test it and perform it better in
the next event ;-)

Final word to the non believers:
JuditPolgar was and is really Judit Polgar. I had a great time hosting
her here on the ICS (did not help me prepare Junior...) for a couple
of days. She is real nice and don't believe any rumors regarding her
father, mother / family. I am not a PR guy but they are all incredibly
normal and nice people.

Last word I would like to thank IBM and especially Mrs. Shaula Heitner
from IBM. If companies like IBM find the courage to sponsor such
cultural events it is only because of people like Shaula who are able
to identify the benefit of chess to society.
