December will be a very busy month and next week I will be covering some of the events that are ongoing on my www page. This was such a large issue I've decided to hold back some material to next week. A bumper issue of games. Hope you enjoy this issue. Mark 2) European Club Cup -------------------------- After the qualifiers throughout the World in recent months the finals of the European Club Cup finally took place in Budapest over the weekend. In itself I don't believe the event is that important, who remembers the Champions of previous years? (Only perhaps the year that Bosnia won it with Kasparov helping out on top board) It is usually an interesting event in that many of the top players participate. The teams normally split into the rich teams and those that genuinely represent the areas that they come from. This year there seemed to be rather fewer outsiders brought in to strengthen teams than normal. The Yerevan team for instance was virtually their Olympiad side, Honved had a good slice of the Hungarian team, the Petach Tivka seemed to contain the majority of the Israeli team with the other Israeli side containing the rest plus Korchnoi brought in to take care of top board duties. The Russian teams comprised some of the stronger players not drafted into some of the Western sides. The pre-event favourites were probably Empor Berlin who had their top boards very much strengthened by the addition of Shirov and Kramnik (although they play Bundesliga for this team also I believe), Tattrangaz Kazan from Russia which was strong all the way down, Borovo Vukovar 91 with Bareev on top board were also strong, but would have been even better if Gary Kasparov had arrived to play for them. All this should have produced a nice competitive weekend with a share of good games, shocks and competitive spirit. It never seems to work out that way, and my general impression of the event is that it brings out the worst in some people and that there are far more disputes in this annual event than in the much larger Olympiad. Willi Icklicki in his report on Chess Planet (http://www.chessweb.com/) mentions fights, threatened withdrawal, actual withdrawal and attempts to get the draw changed as being some of the action off the board. It seems that some teams take the event rather too seriously, or perhaps an opportunity for crude nationalism. The second round provided the defining controversy. Six months ago the Israeli Petach Tikva put in a request that their rounds not be scheduled for the Jewish religious Sabbath. I'm not sure about the rest of the team but I'm sure everyone in the chess world knows that playing during this time is impossible for Yudasin. In fact I remember that this problem has even happened before in this competition and that Kasparov had to be brought in to make sure that the round went ahead. The Chief Arbiter, Mr. Werner Stubenvoll of Austria forgot to tell the rest of the teams of this request, which really calls into question his competence given that this was always going to be the main problem of this final part of the competition. Anyhow the inevitable happened. They drew an intransigent Russian team from Kazan who refused to play at 10am in the morning with no possible compromise. Winning is everything in this competition it seems. The Israeli team went out and stayed out refusing to play for the minor placings. Whilst I have some sympathy at not wanting to play at 10am this problem could and should have been resolved way before the event started, and in the end a solution should have been possible. Especially as this problem is a known one. There were protests and threatened withdrawal from the Serbian Partizan Belgrade before the third round after Borovo Vukovar 91 from Croatia won they had alcohol fueled celebrations which lead to insults and a near fight. The Russian teams also refused to play each other in the third round initially, they tried to get the draw changed so that they wouldn't meet. They were told to get on with it. The chess!! --------------- There has been some quite interesting chess. Korchnoi's two losses, to Kramnik and Almasi are interesting. The wins and losses of Shirov and Leko also. The teams are supposed to play all the rounds. However the main event is a knockout with at first 8 teams reaching first the Quarter Finals, Semi's and Final. The rest of the teams playoff for the minor placings. In the event of a tie the team with a win on the highest board goes through. Round 1 (1996.11.21) Tattrangaz Kazan squeaked a narrow win against Yerevan a previous winner. The rest of the favourites went through. Tattrangaz Kazan (RUS) - Yerevan (ARM) 3.5-2.5 Honved Budapest (HUN) - Dresdner 1898 (GER) 2.0-4.0 Borovo Vukovar 91 (CRO)- Clichy (FRA) 3.0-3.0 Empor Berlin (GER) - Beersheva (ISR) 3.5-2.5 FM Osijek (CRO) - St. Petersburg (RUS) 3.0-3.0 Vilnus (LIT) - Partizan Belgrade 1.5-4.5 Zalaegerszeg (HUN) - Novisibirsk (RUS) 2.5-3.5 Rochade Eupen (BEL) - Petach Tivka (ISR) 1.5-4.5 Round 2 (1996.11.22) Shirov's shock loss on board two to Kozul and Kramnik's quiet draw on board one took the main point scoring potential away from Empor Berlin. Osijek went through on tie-break after winning on the highest board. As mentioned above Tattrangaz Kazan got a walkover after the round was scheduled during the Jewish Sabbath. FM Osijek (CRO) - Empor Berlin (GER) 3.0-3.0 Petach Tivka (ISR) - Tattrangaz Kazan (RUS) 6.0-0.0 Borovo Vukovar 91 (CRO)- Partizan Belgrad (YUG) 4.0-2.0 Dresdner 1898 (GER) - Novosibirsk (RUS) 1.0-5.0 Minor placings (Round 2) Clichi (FRA) - St. Petersburg (RUS) 2.0-4.0 Vilnus (LIT) - Yerevan (ARM) 2.5-3.5 Rochade Eupen (BEL) - Zalaegerszeg (HUN) 1.5-4.5 Honved Budapest - Beersheva (ISR) 3.5-2.5 Round 3 (1996.11.23) Semi-Finals Vukovar play Tattrangaz Kazan in the finals of the event. Vukovar won on board four as opposed to Osijek's win on board six. Wins on the bottom two boards took Tattrangaz Kazan through to the final. One of my all time favourite chess players, I was upset when he died on the eve of the 1992 Olympiad. The Latvian genius was well known for his love of blitz chess and his last event was a blitz get-together in Moscow before the Russian team set off to play in the Olympiad. He didn't win the event, he was already terminally ill, but he did beat Kasparov. (I would love to see that game) Tal was the World Blitz Champion after winning an event in 1988 and he was known to play all-comers between rounds at speed chess. It was entirely appropriate that his 60th birthday should be celebrated with a blitz tournament. (Well it was either that or a party. My favourite Tal story was when he talked about Mikhail Gorbachov's anti-alcohol policy. "They says its the State vs Alcohol. I'll play for the alcohol team.") Anyhow an all-play-all invitational blitz tournament was held. This very strong Junior event has some of the very best young players competing. There were 13 rounds altogether. Osvaldo Orozco Mendez points out from last week that the unrated Sonia Gonzalez was playing in the women's section, I picked up the only S Gonzalez in the rating list who is a different player. The event was being covered at http://200.25.40.42/medchess/ on the internet. I've corrected some of the spellings of the players names in the light of getting the ratings of the players. twic106j has been changed accordingly and the entire section is in the ChessBase section. It seems most likely that the results section is wrong at that the scoresheet was misread as a normal last round draw 1/2 instead of the 1-0 which the game suggests. 6) World Senior Championships in Bad Liebenzell Germany ---------------------------------------------------- World Senior Championships in Bad Liebenzell ran from the 10th-24th of November. The event was a closely contested one and was eventually won by Alexey Suetin of Russia on tie-break from Anatoly Lein of the United States and Janis Klovans of Latvia. Before the last round the lone leader was Wolfgang Uhlmann. He played black against Alexei Suetin in the last round. In trouble throughout the game Uhlmann at least seemed to have given himself reasonable drawing chances towards the end. He played a move leaving his Queen en-prise which would however allow him to give mate. When Suetin took away the mate threat Uhlmann didn't move or protect his Queen and so Suetin took it the following move! Valentina Kozlovskaya finished first and Tamari Khmiadashvili second in a hard fought battle for the Women's title. ASA stands for Academic Sport Association. The tournament director, Mr. Abraham Dorner, was also responsible for inputting the games. The tournament was won jointly by IM Dov Zifroni (20) from Herzliya and IM Boris Kanstler of Kyrgizstan, who has been living in Israel since 1994. [Jonathan Berry points out that the name should be Kantsler but the is mis-spelled in the rating list. I usually try and stick to the ELO list spelling even if wrong! MC.] Both were however 1 point short of a GM-norm. GM Eran Liss finished third. Maxim Uritzky from Haifa clinched his third and final IM-norm after a win in the last round. In the Israel championship one month later he made another norm. Earlier this year he won the 5-round Kfar-Sava open with a perfect score ahead of B. Alterman, A.
