A slightly quieter week with the rather crazy Cap D'Agde Tournament in
France and the Russian Chess Championships in Elista sharing top billing.

2) Cap D'Agde Tournament in France.

CCAS sponsored the European Rapidplay Championships. The event with a
first prize of 100,000 French Francs and attracted many of the World's
best players.
Anatoly Karpov won the European Rapid Chess Championships, Cap D'Age
France. He did so after a poor performance in Tilburg where he only
managed to scramble to 50% in the last round. With that event and this
event in France being so close together one would have thought that
Karpov would have taken a welcome rest. However this is not Karpov's
way, he travelled from Tilburg to Skopje to give an exhibition and then
try to get back to France on Sunday for the start of his involvement in
the tournament on Monday by using the extra hour due to the change from
Summer time in Europe. This he failed to do only arriving in France
three hours before the start of play on Monday. He managed to get
through that first day with a win and a loss and then went on to play
some very solid chess throughout the event.
He should have lost the second game of the final against Van Wely but
somehow survived which broke the Dutchman's will and he lost the two
tie-break games quite badly. He has however proved that he is in
excellent form.
Lots of errors as might be expected in rapidplay chess but some quite
interesting tussles took place.
The tournament was one of the most bizarrely constructed events I have
ever seen.
20 players started the event and they were divided into four qualifying
leagues. These leagues were all-play-all's and each game was at the
time-rate of 30 minutes per player with the addition of 20 seconds for
each move played. The first and second placed players in each group went
forward to an 8 player knockout stage. The remaining players played in
a continuing league system. Third placed players played in one group,
fourth placed in another group and fifth placed in another. Hence there
was a need to establish the exact finishing positions of every player
with playoff matches for even the minor positions in the event of a tie.
These playoff games were played at 3 minutes per game with an additional
2 seconds per move played.
Below are the results of the preliminary groups. Only one playoff match
had special significance as far as qualifying for the main
Championships, Smirin and Adams played off for second place. Other
matches were for less important positions.
Qualifiers were Karpov, Hracek, Gelfand, Van Wely, Akopian, Hansen,
Lautier and Smirin..

3) Russian Chess Championships Elista Russia

The Russian Chess Championships ended in a victory for Alexander
Khalifman. He played solid if not especially spectacular chess to record
his best result in recent years. Alexey Dreev who lead after 7 rounds
drew out the rest of the event and was overhauled in the end. The last
round saw brief draws in the top pairings, Dvoirys-Khalifman and
Dreev-Fominyh but the players who needed wins seemed content simply to
protect their standings. The prizemoney was excellent being around
$100,000 and a car coutesy of Kalmykian and FIDE President Kirsan
Iljumzhinov, he has held the Russian Championships in his capital Elista
for the last three years.
Some of the most impressive chess came from Evgeny Sveshnikov but he
completely self-destructed in the last few rounds losing his last three
games. Dolmatov, Epishin and Tiviakov were all well off the pace.

70 Chessplayers from 10 countries participate in the 4th International
Chess Tournament "Heraklio '96". Every day there is one tournament
round. Games start at 16.00 o'clock local time in Hotel "Aphrodite"
(Gouves Beach).
The final 9th round of the tournament will start on Sunday morning.

5) The 2nd International Chess Festival of Toscolano Maderno (Italy) by Roberto Messa

79 players from 9 countries participated in the 2nd International Chess
Festival of Toscolano Maderno, on the west coast of the Lake of Garda,
19-27 October 1996.
4 GMs (amongst them Tony Miles, Elo rating 2630), 1 WGM. and 4 IMs
played in the strongest tournament, the "Magistrale".
With 5 wins and 4 draws Tony Miles was overtaken in the last round by
Miso Cebalo, (Croatia, Elo 2515, 6 wins and 3 draws). Also Alexander
Zlochevsky (GM from Moskow) was undefeated. All the players enjoyed a
very warm and sunny week, before enter in the grey metropolitan winter.
This was also the first chess tournament in Italy with a daily and
professional coverage in Internet (htpp://www.vol.it/tebaide/festival)
where cross tables and games (.cbf format) are available.
For the next year the organizers are planning a stronger event, in the
same season, or maybe in spring.

6) XII World Youth Chess Festival
Cala Galdana Menorca in the Balearic Islands is the venue of the World
Youth Chess Festival between 20th October and the 3rd November 1996.
This FIDE event is endorsed by the United Nations and is an annual
event. The competition has under 10,12,14,16 and 18 sections for both
boys and girls. It will produce 10 Champions altogether. The events are
11 round Swiss events.
The leaders of these events are not guaranteed to go on to be
professional players but this year there were quite a number of quite
well known figures playing in the tournaments. Probably the most
interesting event was the Boys under 14 event with Etienne Bacrot as its
star. He had a very good Olympiad and has recently beaten ex-World
Champion Vassily Smyslov 5-1 in a match. Did he win? No in fact he came
5th a point and a half behind the winner after losing to him in last
round game. He was level with Ganguly who beat a strong GM last year in
India. The winner was Gabriel Sargissian who beat Ganguly and Bacrot on
the way to the title.
Azerbaijan and India seem to have quite strong junior programs in train,
and China also has a few high profile names but not as many as might
have been expected given their interest in chess.
Alek Gershon won the under 16 section above a number of more highly
rated players after winning an extremely odd game in the last round. The
under-18 section Rafael Leitao from Brazil took the under 18 section.
The games section has a selection of games from the top players.
