63rd Russian Championships 2010 (Playoff)

63rd Russian Chess Championships 2010

The 63rd Russian Chess Championships took place 11th-22nd December 2010. Alexander Grischuk was the top seed, Sergey Karjakin was playing his first championship since his move from Ukraine, Dmitry Jakovenko, Peter Svidler and Ian Nepomniachtchi also starred. Sergey Karjakin and Ian Nepomniachtchi tied for first with 7/11 and played off for the title. I don't know the precise time control for the playoff, ChessBase reported it as 25 mins + 10 seconds per move although the clock times on the relay board said 15 that doesn't necessarily mean they were wrong. Both these games were drawn. The final game saw white have six minutes and black 5 and draw odds. Ian Nepomniachtchi won his first Russian title by drawing this game as black. 20 year old Nepomniachtchi has already won the Aeroflot Open and European Championships but has yet to achieve stable results, his openings aren't at the very highest level yet but his immense natural talent is there for all to see, especially in confusing positions. Rightly or wrongly I see him as the new Morozevich if I were to try and sum up his style but it is very early days yet. Top 10 on talent is very possible, maybe even rather quickly. Karjakin was pretty unlucky. A first loss in the final round cost him the title, was then never worse in any of the playoff games and indeed had a crushing advantage out of the opening in the final blitz Armageddon that he couldn't quite convert and finally Nepomniachtchi held the Rook vs Bishop Ending. Karjakin finally lost the title that seemed within his grasp for so long, it must have been extremely vexing and he was pretty upset at the end.

Karjakin - Nepomniatchi Final Game Video

Eugene Potemkin took a video of the final armageddon playoff game that settled the title of Russian Chess Champion. It does show that Karjakin didn't even pause for thought with 18.Qd2 instead of the crushing 18.Rg1. Probably it was quite unreasonable to expect him to find it at this time control.
