1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Arthur Brameld, Jack Peters, Miklos Orso, Kenneth W Regan and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The World Chess Championship Candidates tournament is one of the very strongest tournaments in history and the start has been very promising. Levon Aronian has started with 2.5/3 and Magnus Carlsen and Peter Svidler are half a point further back. For me a Candidates tournament has been the obvious solution to FIDE's problems of crowded calendars and limited numbers of sponsors for many years. They also tend to promote more aggressive chess especially, as has happened in London a couple of players have started badly and so scoring has started. Strong events such as this tend to set the agenda for the next few years and also provide a springboard for players to improve themselves. I very much have the feeling that we're seeing important chess history being written.

The FIDE World Chess Championship Candidates take place in London 15th March to 1st April 2013. 14 Rounds 8 players in a double round robin. Round 1 pairings for Friday 15th March 2013: Levon Aronian vs Magnus Carlsen, Boris Gelfand vs Teimour Radjabov, Vassily Ivanchuk vs Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler vs Vladimir Kramnik.

The Chinese league was a marathon event over 22 rounds. Rounds: Beijing 28th Apr - May 1st, Taizhou 27th-29th June, Shanghai 11th-13th July (turned out to be Tianjin), Shenzhen 14th-17th Sept, Hangzhou 6th-9th October and finally Danzhou 21st-24th Dec 2012.
