1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Jon Haskel, Adolivio Capece, Miklos Orso, Paulo Rocha, DS Murthy, Frank Berry, Michael Atkins and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Magnus Carlsen won the London Chess Classic with a fantastic +5 score that took him 10 points beyond Garry Kasparov's peak rating of 2851 a record that lasted 13 years. Carlsen has moved well clear of his rivals although Vladimir Kramnik also went over 2800 after a great performance in the event. Things are set up very nicely for the Candidates next year and these two look the most likely winners at the moment although it is unlikely Aronian will play as poorly as he did in London when he returns. The FIDE Grand Prix in Tashkent finished in a three way tie between Sergey Karjakin, Wang Hao and Alexander Morozevich in a very tough tournament for everyone.

2) 4th London Chess Classic

The 4th London Chess Classic took place 1st to 10th December 2012. Magnus Carlsen won the London Chess Classic with a score of 18/24 (3 points for a win, +5 =3) and has raised his rating to 2861.4 beating Kasparov's 13 year old record by a huge margin of 10 points. This is his third triumph in four years. He was two points clear of last year's winner Vladimir Kramnik. Carlsen was guaranteed first place once Michael Adams drew with Kramnik who both also had fantastic events. Carlsen was involved in a fascinating draw with World Champion Viswanathan Anand which also finished in a draw. The only decisive game of the day saw Hikaru Nakamura beat Luke McShane after the latter just blundered a piece in an equal position. Judit Polgar drew quickly with Levon Aronian.

3) FIDE Grand Prix Tashkent 2012

The 2nd FIDE Grand Prix organised by AGON took place in Tashkent 22nd November to 4th December 2012. Wins for Sergey Karjakin against Ruslan Ponomariov and Wang Hao against joint leader Shakhriyar Mamedyarov allowed them to join Alexander Morozevich (final round draw against Peter Svidler) on 6.5/11. There was an amazing battle for first in the final rounds. Fabiano Caruana was half a point back alongside Caruana and Kasimdzhanov who showed very good preparation.
