1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Md. Haroon Or Rashid, Miklos Orso, Massimo Casa, Peter Boel, Anastasiya Karlovich, Christophe Philippe and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Another very busy week of chess. The Women's World Championship barely has a famous name or leading seed left in it after a bloodbath in the second round that saw the World Champion Hou Yifan, her challenger last year Humpy Koneru and Anna Muzychuk who had recently moved second behind Judit Polgar as the women's number 2 player for a time. The World Cup is one that has an element of randomness but there was some very nervy chess on display. It was nice that the 6th Kings Tournament took place but the organisers were not rewarded with a classic. The players tried hard enough but the event never really caught fire. It was rather typified with the final playoff that saw Vassily Ivanchuk win on time a pawn down and on the worse side of the draw against Veselin Topalov in the playoff's decisive moment. The Remco Heite Chess tournament was a small all-play-all weekender with a battling field which produced a very enjoyable little tournament where Loek van Wely lost in the final round to allow Sipke Ernst and Daniel Fridman to catch him. Luke McShane played some interesting chess but finished last losing three games, hopefully for him this will help him shake off the rust for London in a couple of weeks. Sergei Rublevsky won the Siberian Bank Cup in Novosibirsk which was yet another interesting tournament. There is also a strong open in Fujairah in the UAE (Baadur Baadur, Le Quang Liem, Etienne Bacrot etc). These are not the only important events either with the World Juniors and World Seniors for instance almost too much to recount.

2) 6th Kings Tournament 2012

The 6th Kings Tournament took place 7th to 14th November 2012. Vassily Ivanchuk and Veselin Topalov played off for the 6th Kings tournament after finishing with identical records in every way (just one win apiece against Nisipeanu) in the main tournament. Both final round 6 games were drawn otherwise Caruana would have joined them in a 2x15m+3spm and maybe blitz playoff (5m+3spm) and Armageddon playoff. Topalov lost on time a pawn up in the first rapid game with white. Ivanchuk only needed a draw with white in game 2 to win the title which he achieved reasonably easily.

3) FIDE World Cup Women 2012

The Women's World Chess Championship is a 6 round event organised using the World Cup format of mini-matches. Until the final there will be two standard time control games and if necessary two rapid followed by two blitz and then finally a sudden death game. Rounds 2 so a huge number of the seeds and favourites eliminated including Hou Yifan and Humpy Koneru.

4) Siberian Bank Cup 2012

The Siberian Bank Cup took place in Novosibirsk over the weekend of the 17th-18th November 2012. Rapid tournament with a time control of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Copying an innovation introduced by the London Chess Classic there was an odd number of players so that one player was available for commentary. Sergey Rublevsky scored 3.5/5 on day 2 to take clear first place on 6.5/10. Dmitry Bocharov and day 1 leader Dmitry Jakovenko finished on 6.

5) Remco Heite Chess 2012

The Remco Heite Chess Tournament took place over the weekend 16th to 18th November 2012. This was a 6 player invitational running Friday to Sunday.. Loek van Wely, Daniel Fridman and Sipke Ernst (who beat van Wely in the last round) tied for first on 3/5. Luke McShane would have seen this as an ideal warm up for the London Classic as he doesn't play that much but he had a torrid time finishing last losing three games. This whole event turned out well for the organisers with hard fought chess throughout. There was a 45m per player open won by Erwin L' Ami who won with 7.5/9.

The 2nd UNAM Chess Festival takes place 16th to 25th November 2012. The event started with a Women's GM rapid event with group stages followed by a final stage. There is no official game file yet but the games were broadcast live however the format would make processing the games very difficult even if available.
