The Modern French: A Complete Guide for Black

1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Alexander Prokhorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Adolivio Capece, Alex Gimeno, James Alvis Tafur, Adrian Noriega, Edwin Baart, Nigel Short, Miklos Orso, Paulo Rocha and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Viswanathan Anand retained his title in one of the tightest matches in recent times against Boris Gelfand. After the main match was drawn 6-6 Anand beat Gelfand 2.5-1.5 in the rapid playoff. As Anand himself said, the match "simply could have gone either way". Indeed Gelfand had opportunities in almost all of the rapid games and reached a technically drawn ending in game 2 which he eventually lost, albeit at the cost of a lot of time on the clock, after having defused a dangerous opening novelty. It will be interesting to see how both players now play after this tense match.

The Tal Memorial is next up with the opening ceremony on Thursday with Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian the biggest star in a field of stars (Kramnik, Radjabov, Nakamura, Caruana, Morozevich, Grischuk, Tomashevsky and McShane.). There is an interesting innovation of a blitz tournament to decide who gets what place in the draw. A top 5 finish will give those players 5 whites and 4 blacks. I believe there will be live video coverage similar to that in the World Chess Championship. This week the French Team Championship, Women's World Rapid and Blitz Magistral Ciudad de Buenos Aires 2012<, Granda-Short Rapid Match and 3rd Danzhou GM Chess Tournament are amongst the many interesting tournaments.

2) World Chess Championship 2012

The World Chess Championship in Moscow took place 11th-30th May 2012. Viswanathan Anand retained his title only after an extremely tense rapid playoff. This was a tough professional match but with an average of only 29 moves in the initial 12 game match saw too often opening questions settling the result of the game rather than extended middle-game struggles. Not a classic by any means but Gelfand came pretty close, he probably had the balance of the play but Anand emerged the better from the key moments of the match, especially during the rapid section.

3) French Team Championship Top 12 2012

The French Team Championship Top 12 (although only 11 teams compete) takes place 31st May to 10th June 2012. It is unclear whether some of the players in the team lists such as Magnus Carlsen and Peter Leko will actually compete. Chalons en Champagne leads after 5 rounds.

Alexei Shirov won the Magistral Ciudad de Buenos Aires tournament that took place 28th May to 3rd June 2012. Shirov scored 5.5/7 a point clear of Ruben Felgaer.

5) Granda-Short Match

Nigel Short was in Lima 24th-27th May 2012 for a rapid match against Julio Granda Zuniga and two simultaneous exhibitions. Peru became the 100th separate nation he has visited. Short managed a 3.5-2.5 win with a final game victory where he only broke through after lengthy manouvering.

The exhibition was held in a tent at the Universidad Cientifica del Sur and there were problems with the lighting and viewing the games on the first day. The second day was better organised with a vast improvement in the conditions. Short leveled the match in game 4, was much better out of the opening in game 5 but after a miscalculation had to work very hard to draw.

Short won the match with a lengthy ground out a win in a closed position where he never thought he was going to break through. Short also gave two simul exhibitions one on the 24th in the Club Nacional, a very old and prestigious club in the centre of Lima, containing many of the political and business elite. He conceded 1 draw out of 17 or 18 games.

He then played a second simul at the "Saco Oliveros" school in Lima on the 27th with far stronger opposition including several FMs. The children were mostly from disadvantaged or modest backgrounds. Short played 28 games winning 23 with 5 draws and was pleased with his play. World under-13 Champion Jose Martinez and Panamerican under-9 Champion Gonzalo Quirhuayo were amongst those involved in the hardest fights.

Short hopes to tour South America again later in the year. First two rapid games are missing. News: Adrian Noriega, James Alvis Tafur and Nigel Short.

6) 3rd Danzhou GM Chess Tournament 2012

The 3rd Danzhou GM Chess Tournament takes place 29th May - 7th June 2012. Bu Xiangzhi and a resurgent Ni Hua lead on 4/6. Women's World Chess Champion Hou Yifan is having a harder time of it ahead of Saturday's Women's Grand Prix tournament in Kazan, she only has 2/6 with no wins.

7) ch-ISL Playoff 2012

The play-off for the Icelandic Championship took place 25th-28th May 2012. Bragi Thorfinnsson and Thrustur Thorhallsson tied 2-2. This meant there was a further days play on May 30th. There were further Rapid and blitz games before an armagedon playoff won by Throstur Thorhallsson. The original event took place 13th-23rd April 2012.

8) Albena Masters 2012

The Albena Masters took place 26th May - 3rd June 2012. Vladiir Akopian edged out Ivan Cheparinov Tigran L Petrosian, Tamir Nabaty and Karen H Grigoryan on tie-break after all tied 7/9. Games from round 8 are currently missing.

9) 21st Annual Chicago Open 2012

The 21st Annual Chicago Open took place 24th-28th, 2012, at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel in Wheeling. Gabriel Sargissian who helped Varuzhan Akobian in the US Championship took clear first on 7/9. Top seed Michael Adams finished a point behind in 9th. Adams lost to IM Daniel J Ludwig in round 3 but it was 3 draws at the end that really cost him.

11) World Women Rapid and Blitz 2012

The World Women Rapid and Blitz Championship takes place 31st May to 6th June 2012. Antoaneta Stefanova took clear first in the rapid event with 8.5/11. The blitz tournament takes place 4th-5th June 2012.

Chinese League 2012

The marathon Chinese League takes place 28th April to 9th October 2012. First four rounds took place in Beijing. Rounds 4-7 27th-30th June 2012. It seems we can't believe the dates on chess-results for the Chinese League as a fourth round of games were played. This is a very tricky league to cover at the best of times without the only reliable English source of information being so wrong.

29) XLVII Capablanca Memorial 2012

The 47th Capablanca Memorial took place in Havana, Cuba 4th-14th May 2012. The Elite Group saw the return of 5 time winner (2005-7, 2010-11) and defending champion Vassily Ivanchuk and he won for the 6th time in a row with 6.5/10 by a point from Ian Nepomniachtchi who went down in flames in the final round trying to catch Ivanchuk and was defeated by Leinier Dominguez Perez who caught him on 5.5 points.

Further games from the Premier Group are still expected although I'm increasingly worried they won't turn up.
