1) Introduction

My thanks to Alexander Prokhorov, Roland Wimmer, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Frank Berry, Alex Holowczak, Marija Lukic, Nastja Karlovich, Milos Orso, Sinisa Joksic, Bill Townsend, Chris Bird, Jack Peters and everyone else who helped with the issue.

A busy week of not quite elite events. Sadly Judit Polgar's win in Brazil in a rapid tournament is in danger of being lost to history as the games were not recorded, something that seems very strange in this day and age. Indeed this seems to have been a week where obtaining and processing games were problematic for many events, it is a relief to have finished. There has been a further announcement on the FIDE website that the FIDE Candidates will be in London in October and November. I'm still only about 70% it will happen but we'll no doubt soon see whether it ends up being totally confirmed.

5) Festival da Uva 2012

The Festival da Uva took place 1st-4th March 2012. Judit Polgar won the all-play-all followed by knockout event on the first two days. Final Polgar 2-0 Milos. 3rd Place Mecking 0.5-1.5 Rodriguez. Sadly their live coverage completely failed for the second year running making the event of very much less interest. There are nice photo reports by Alberto Silver on the ChessBase website however. There may be some games from video coverage of the event. Gilberto Milos won the Uva Open on 3rd-4th March 2012 with 8.5/9, there were some games from the second day of this event.

6) 130th Varsity Match

Cambridge won the 130th Varsity Chess Match against Oxford 4.5-3.5 to take a 57-53 lead with 20 draws in the series. There were wins by Audrey Kueh, Vedantha Kumar and Illya Iyengar for Cambridge. David Zakarian and Athanasios Tsanas won for Oxford. Salimbeni (Cambridge) won the match for Cambridge with a draw in the final game to finish, he had earlier turned down a draw. 14) US Amateur Team East

The US Amateur Team East took place 18th-20th February 2012. My thanks to Bill Townsend for the news. I hope to process the games by next week. He report is below.

Over President's Day Weekend the four U.S. Amateur Team Championships were held in four corners of the country: North (Northbrook, Illinois), South (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), East (Parsippany, NJ) and West (Santa Clara, CA). However the East is where it all began 42 years ago, and it's so big that it dares to call itself the "World Amateur Team Championship." This year the incredibly mild weather the east coast is experiencing allowed Team East to have its largest turnout ever: 1237 players competing in 294 teams. The previous record was 291 teams in 2008.

There was some talk online about how this may be the largest team tournament ever held. While 294 teams is somewhat more than any chess Olympiad, it is probably a lot fewer actual players since all Olympiad teams have five members - four players and an alternate. Also 2008 beat 2012 in number of players - there were 1,251 players that year.

However you count it, this event was huge, and a festival atmosphere prevailed, because as always Team East is a study in contradictions. It attracts huge numbers in spite of the fact that entry fees are low (about $25 a person) and no cash prizes are given, only trophies and clocks. It's an amateur event, but dozens of titled players participate including some of the best in the country. Former U.S. Champions GM Joel Benjamin, GM Arthur Bisguier and WGM Rusudan Goletiani, as well as top GMs Robert Hess, Leonid Yudasin and Alejandro Ramirez all played first boards for various teams. The term "Amateur" refers to the fact that the average team rating must be below 2,200 USCF, but beyond that almost anything goes.

Speaking of which, every year there are teams that carefully calculate and choose their players to get as close to the magic 2,200 number as possible. How successful is this strategy? Well, this year there were no fewer than eight teams with ratings of 2,198 or better, and yet only one of them finished in the top five. The overall winner, the only team with 5.5 points, was "Forking With Tebow's Knights Never Leads To Mate" which had an average team rating of 2,185. The team members were: GM Robert Hess, Zachary Weiner, Shawn Swindell, and Peter Hess.

In the last round, with 4.5 points, they faced "Caro-Cain Defense: 999 Plans," the only team that had a perfect 5-0 score, and a 2,171 average rating. The team members: WGM Rusudan Goletiani, Arthur Shen, Andrew Ryba and Shaoxiang Wang.

In this very tense match, initially the two sides traded wins: Peter Hess defeated "Caro-Cain's" Wang, and then the match evened up again when Ryba beat Swindell in a 100-move marathon that saw Swindell probably moving too quickly with plenty of time. It all came down to what happened on the last two boards - the Tebow team was better on board one but worse on board two. Eventually board two was drawn, but Hess was victorious on board one, clinching the match and the tournament. Three of these games, including Hess-Goletiani, are included in the database.

After the match Hess and Weiner good naturedly posed for Chess Life photographer Al Lawrence, semi-seriously striking the Tebow pose in the lobby in front of the big ballroom. Alas, only half the team was in these pictures: Ryba and Wang had already gone home.
