1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Miklos Orso, John D Thornton, Istvan Brindza, Yuri Vovk, Gerard Demuydt, Stephane Faure, Henri Koskinen, Ronald Scott, Laszlo Nagy, Frank Berry, Sinisa Joksic and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Russian Team Championships and the German Bundesliga both concluded this weekend. For the outsider it is a bit difficult to get excited about battles between teams that mean little to you, but the star studded fields leads to great chess and so there plenty of good games to look at. There are opens in Dubai and Kuala Lumpur amongst others.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Schachbundesliga 2009-10

April 10th-11th 2010 saw the last two rounds of the Schachbundesliga season 2009/10.

Two rounds before the end of the season Baden-Baden, Solingen and Bremen were fighting for the title in the Schachbundesliga.

The decisive fixtures took place in Round 14 on 10th April 2010. In Bremen Werder Bremen beat SG Solingen to keep their title hopes alive and ruin Solingen's. In Baden-Baden OSG Baden-Baden beat SV Muelheim Nord to take a one point lead into the final round. Board points didn't count so if Baden-Baden had dropped points in the final round a playoff for the title was possible. However with Baden-Baden played 10th placed SF Katernberg and so they were strong favourites to retain their title. They duly did this by thumping Katernberg 7-1.

15) Welsh Championships 2010

The Welsh Championship FIDE rated tournament took place over the Easter 2nd-5th April 2010. John D Thornton reports "This was won easily by clear favourite and last year's joint winner Richard S Jones, with a 2500+ performance I believe. Richard already has norms for the IM title - just needs to get his grade over 2400 for this. This event should have helped a bit, though his opponents were generally much weaker than him."

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
