1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Miklos Orso, Adolivio Capece, Mitko Iliev, Md. Haroon Or Rashid, Michael Rahal, Richard Palliser, Ted Jennings, Jon Speelman, William W Rhee, Gerardo Fernandez, Frank Berry, Per Rasmussen, Stefan Spiekermann, Henri Koskinen and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Amber tournament is the main event of the week with many of the top players competing. Vassily Ivanchuk who I believe has played every (certainly the most) editions of the tournament leads after eight rounds undefeated. Magnus Carlsen has had a down and up event with big runs of wins and a couple of struggles. Three rounds to go and all to play for. The European Individual Championships saw the very talented Ian Nepomniachtchi take clear first place. This talented player reminds me quite a bit of a young Morozevich. This is the second big victory of his career, he has also won the Aeroflot Open. Team tournaments dominate the issue with many leagues heading towards a conclusion.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament

The 19th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament takes place at the Palais de la Mediterranée, a legendary hotel on the world-famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France, March 12th-25th 2010. The event is organized by the Association Max Euwe of chess maecenas Joop van Oosterom, which is based in Monaco. The new number one in the world rankings, Magnus Carlsen, is the top-seed in Nice. Also present are Levon Aronian, the winner of the past two Amber tournaments, and Vladimir Kramnik, who won the Amber tournament a record six times.

Official site: http://www.amberchess2010.com/

Round 4 Magnus Carlsen won 2-0 against Jan Smeets to catch Vassily Ivanchuk (who beat Aronian in their rapid game) in the lead. Gelfand played a superb blindfold game to defeat Vladimir Kramnik. Gelfand then won a crushing victory with black in the rapid game to complete a 2-0 win and move to 3rd= alongside Alexander Grischuk.

Round 5. Vassily Ivanchuk leads the overall and rapid sections and is 2nd in the blindfold section. He beat Jan Smeets 1.5-0.5 today. Magnus Carlsen is 2nd in the overall standings and top in the blindfold after beating Sergey Karjakin in the blindfold game, however Karjakin halted Carlsen's winning streak in the rapid by winning that game. Boris Gelfand's hot streak continues with a 2-0 win against Dominguez Perez. Vladimir Kramnik bounced back after his loss to Gelfand to win 2-0 against Ruslan Ponomariov. Peter Svidler beat the desperately out of form Levon Aronian 2-0 also.

Round 6. Magnus Carlsen beat Boris Gelfand 2-0 whilst Vassily Ivanchuk was held 1-1 by Ruslan Ponomariov (two draws). Carlsen found a way of complicating the rapid game against Gelfand just when a draw seemed likely and this was rewarded by a decisive blunder. This means that Carlsen overtook Ivanchuk to take the lead in the over all standings. Vladimir Kramnik was defeated by Jan Smeets in the blindfold event after over-ambitious early play was refuted. Sergey Karjakin beat Leinier Dominguez-Perez 2-0 in their match. Carlsen leads the blindfold section with 5/6 half a point clear of Alexander Grischuk who beat Peter Svidler. Kramnik beat Smeets in the rapid to join Ivanchuk in the lead in that section.

Round 7. Vassily Ivanchuk regained the lead in the over-all standings after beating Alexander Grischuk in their rapid game and overall 1.5-0.5. Magnus Carlsen lost the blindfold game against Vugar Gashimov to seed the lead. Boris Gelfand and Sergey Karjakin lie 3rd in the over all standings. Magnus Carlsen and Alexander Grischuk lead the blindfold section with 5/7. Vassily Ivanchuk leads the rapid with 5.5/7.

Round 8. Vassily Ivanchuk extended his over-all lead in spite of drawing both his games against Leinier Dominguez Perez. Ivanchuk leads the combined standings and rapid event by a point. Magnus Carlsen played a tremendously sharp game against Vladimir Kramnik in the blindfold tournament finally missing his way at the end when he had a draw available. He nearly got beaten a second time in the rapid too but just held on to draw. Alexander Grischuk won again in the blindfold tournament, this time against Sergey Karjakin extending his lead to a full point in that event. Rest day Monday.

8) 11th Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas"

Michael Rahal reports: The 11th Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas" (Spain) has always been considered the best and strongest online event in the world. However, traditionally the rating favorites have never actually won the title. This year's event took place on ICC (http://www.chessclub.com) March 12th to 20th 2010. At last, this year the tide has turned with GM Hikaru Nakamura’s victory. The fastest "blitz" player in the world defeated consecutively GM Simonian Hrair by 4 to 2, IM Federico Perez Ponsa (3-0), GM Rodrigo Vasquez Schroeder (2.5-1.5) and in the final GM Yaroslav Zinchenko by a clear 3.5-1.5. After several participating in previous Dos Hermanas events with uneven results, Nakamura, currently number 17 in the world with a 2735 rating, has finally been able to take the title down, at the same time wining a 2.000 euro cash prize. His recent results have been very good: he won the USA championship for the second time in May 2009 while more recently he has performed very well in the elite Corus and London Chess Classic events. Also remarkable was his incredible score as first board at the last World Team Championship in Turkey, helping his team along to the silver medal. With this event, the Seville city and its Sports Council continue to promote chess as an educational tool and for sports promotion, combining it with the seventh edition of the OTB open that will be held on the 10th and 11th of April 2010.

On the qualifying rounds: The online event features twelve 12-round Swisses (3/0 games) qualifying 32 players to the knockout final stage. More than 1200 players fought for the 2.000 euro first prize, as well as all the special prizes and raffles. Not only great players participate: many chess fans got the opportunity to play against one of the best players in the world at rapid chess in one of the 12 qualifiers that took place until Wednesday. The best 32 will qualified for the finals, and a KO on Friday and Saturday 19th-20th March 2010. After the first games: GMs Lazaro Bruzon (Cuba), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Farruk Amonatov (Tijkistan), Alexander Lastin (Russia) and IMs Ismael Karim (Morroco) and Alexander Lenderman (USA).

The best qualifier was American GM Hikaru Nakamura, (2735 rating), and is considered the fastest player on the planet. He currently occupies the 17th place on the World rating list. Another famous player who qualified was American GM Gata Kasmsky, boasting a 2702 international rating and 32nd on the rating list. Other contenders for the first place who are in the 100 best players in the world were the Russian Grand Masters Dmitry Andreiken (2645) and Alexander Lastin (2643).

At the same time, several really good players were not able to qualify including Bulgarian Grand Master Kiril Georgiev (2669) and young German star Georg Meier (2663).

Dos Hermanas also organises the 7th Internacional Chess Open "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas", which will be held on the 10th and 11th of April, featuring a 1500 euro first prize.

With two rounds to go OSG Baden-Baden lead over SG Solingen with vastly superior board count. Both teams have 24 points. Werder Bremen dropped a point drawing with 4th place Muelheim Nord in the clash of the weekend. Muelheim remained in fourth place after this draw which they need in order to qualify for the European Club Cup. SK Konig Tegel and Erfurter SK are now marooned at the bottom of the table and are relegated. Four teams are relegated in total so FC Bayern Muenchen and Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim are favourites to join them, they have 5 points, the only other team that can go down is SF Berlin 1903 currently on 7. However there is still some tension because four of the five teams (Berlin, Munich, Berlin Tegel and Erfurter SK) play each other in the last two rounds.

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Contact: The ECSC Organiser Paul Valois at paulvalois@yahoo.co.uk or on 0113 2620609, or Ian Watson at ian@irwatson.demon.co.uk or on 07768 847476.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
