1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Steve Giddins, Michael McDowell, Egidijus Zeromskis, Mitko Iliev, Daniel Panarotto, Daniel Mueller, Janos Rigo, Patricia Claros Aguilar, Javier Rubio, Dave Clayton, John Saunders, Miklos Orso, Attila Csonka, George Mirijanian and everyone else who helped with the issue.

800 issues up! Not really a major landmark but nevertheless it's always nice to see the hundreds tick over. I'm more interested in the improvement of the website as a whole which is a project that is very much ongoing. The main event of the week is the European Individual Championships which although lacking the very elite has a big percentage of the top 100 players in the world and which should be very interesting. The official site seems very organised with nice webcam coverage. It did struggle a bit with the load on the first day and this seems to be a bit of a trend this year, even on websites used to heavy traffic when broadcasting games. I can only think that more people are visiting websites to watch chess which has to be a good thing. Elsewhere the Gotth' Art Cup was won by Alexander Beliavsky half a point clear of Lajos Portisch who played impressively for a man who doesn't play very much these days. 13 year old Richard Rapport scored his final GM norm and should be a player to watch. Other events are far too numerous to mention but chess activity is still very much alive even in these times of global financial crisis.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

26) 2009-10 British Chess Solving Championship

Report by Michael McDowell.

Official British Chess Problem Society website: http://www.bstephen.me.uk/

The final of the 2009-10 British Chess Solving Championship, sponsored by Winton Capital Management, was held at Oakham School on 20th February. Last year’s champion John Nunn was absent due to illness, and the event turned into a two horse race between ex-World Champion Jonathan Mestel and David Friedgood. Mestel took the title by one point, and both he and Friedgood outscored the current World Champion, Piotr Murdzia of Poland, who was guesting along with Dutch solving GM Dolf Wissmann. The relatively low scores reflect a set of problems which were tougher than usual.

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Contact: The ECSC Organiser Paul Valois at paulvalois@yahoo.co.uk or on 0113 2620609, or Ian Watson at ian@irwatson.demon.co.uk or on 07768 847476.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
