Kasparov vs Karpov 3

1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Gheorghe Nemeth, Keith Rust, Geurt Gijssen, Paulo Rocha, George Mirijanian, Peter Doggers, Adolivio Capece, Association Max Euwe, Pam Thomas, Ian Rogers and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The first issue of 2010 rounds up the remaining issues of 2009 with the Russian Championships being won by Alexander Grischuk and a large number of results and games from the Christmas Congresses. Then the events that take place over the New Year are heading towards a conclusion with traditional events in Reggio Emilia, Hastings etc. Magnus Carlsen became the youngest holder of the number one spot in the FIDE Rating list following Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov and Viswanathan Anand. This has brought his name to the general public's attention, Time Magazine, front page of Wikipedia today etc and I think this will only continue. It will be interesting to see how he handles it. In London he looked a bit tired and his work with Kasparov suggests he knows he isn't the finished article (a frightening prospect) watching him in the Wijk aan Zee tournament starting on January 15th will be interesting. Should be a great year.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

8) FIDE Rating List January 2010

Magnus Carlsen duly became World Number 1 at the age of 19 after the release of the FIDE rating list for January 2010. Carlsen's result in the Pearl Spring tournament in China with 8/10 took him most of the way there in the last list. Solid if not spectacular gains in the Tal Memorial and London Chess Classic confirmed it whilst Topalov's performance in four games whilst sick at the European Team Championships cost him the 5 points that is the difference. The number one spot clearly isn't Topalov's priority at the moment as he prepares himself for the World Championship match against Viswanathan Anand in 2010 (Anand's mind also seems focused on this). Vladimir Kramnik moves back to four in the world with gains in the Tal Memorial and London tournaments. Most of the rest of the top 10 seems to be fairly insignificant shuffling about except for Morozevich's fall to 17 from 10 and Wang Yue's rise to 9.

Talented youngsters Ian Nepomniachtchi and Wesley So return to the top 100.

Sergey Karjakin's move from Ukraine to Russia has been reflected official in this list. Argentina and Ukraine are major nations whose players are missing from the general list (but not the top lists) because their Federations are behind in their payments to FIDE. Their players will be restore upon payment.
