1) Introduction

My thanks to Yuri Vovk, Rodolfo Arias, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Frank Berry, Harun Taner, John Hillery, Miklos Orso, Mikhail Golubev, Adolivio Capece, Paulo Alexandre Rocha and everyone else who helped with the issue.

This ia a very exciting week as the London Chess Classic gets underway tomorrow. The pre-event favourites Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik meet in round one and I hope they're up for a fight! The event is seen as a start of a series of chess events, promotion of chess in England, especially in schools and a bid for the 2012 World Chess Championships. I will be there for all days play. In addition success for Magnus Carlsen will mean he will be World Number One in January.

Favourite Boris Gelfand has reached the final of the FIDE World Cup where he meets either Vladimir Malakhov or Ruslan Ponomariov.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

4) Czech Coal Match 2009

The Czech Coal Chess Match between "Snowdrops" and "Old Hands" rather less romantically women vs veterans, took place in the Crystal Palace Hotel Marianske Lazne.

The snowdrops team of women players just managed to hold on to the lead they established in the first half of the event to win 16.5-15.5. The veterans won the second half.

Video coverage at: http://europe-echecs.com/actualites/actualites-femmes-contre-experience-2047.html

Europe-Echecs are on the spot to report on this Veterans vs Ladies match.

14) 1st Thanksgiving FIDE Open

The 1st Thanksgiving FIDE Open was held 27th-29th November 2009 in Stillwater Oklahoma USA. It had accelerated pairings throughout. That is the top half of the beginning wall chart received a half point which they carried throughout. FM Conrad Holt, a high school player from Wichita, Kansas won with 5 wins and 2 draws. With the beginning half point he ended with 6.5 / 7. He was followed by IM Michael Brooks of Kansas City, Mo who had 6 pts. FM Movses Movsisyan from Tulsa, OK had 5.5 pts. Players from many states participated. 4 players received their final FIDE rating norms so that they should be FIDE rated in January for the 1st time. The event was directed by IA Frank K. Berry and the President of the USCF Jim Berry, FA. My thanks to Frank Berry for this report. Website: www.okchess.org

15) Podgaets Memorial Blitz

On 3 December 2009 the Mikhail Podgaets blitz memorial took place in the Café Papashon in Odessa. Twelve local players participated. IM Podgaets not only had potential of becoming a very strong GM, but was also, according to his tournament results not weaker in blitz than anyone in our town, sometimes winning events with many GMs participating. Playing blitz against Karpov was habitual for him during almost two decades.

As it happened, young players, especially IMs dominated the Podgaets Blitz Memorial.

I should be glad with my result, as I was also involved in the organisation. (In order to compensate this, nearly for the first time ever I made a special preparation for a blitz event, playing six Gibtelecom ICC internet qualifiers on 27-29 November).

My opinions on time controls are not as radical as GM Tkachiev's who says that less time is better, but blitz can be viewed as one of three main legitimate forms of chess competitions. (And I personally hope that rapid will prevail at the professional level sooner or later).

The tournament was sponsored by SHAPE Services. Its head IM Igor Berezovsky, one of Podgaets' pupils, abstained from playing himself. (Though he could: he is quite a strong amateur; several years ago he made a draw with Rustam Kasimdzhanov in the Bundesliga).

This piece by Mikhail Golubev first appeared in Chess Today. My thanks to him for the games.
