1) Introduction

My thanks to Dennis Monokroussos, Miklos Orso, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Adolivio Capece, Frank Berry, Patrick Vander Voort, Robert Fontaine, Nigel Freeman, George Mirijanian, Lou Caruana, Gerard Demuydt, Mikhail Golubev and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The FIDE World Cup has reached it's fourth round. Alexander Morozevich, Teimour Radjabov and Vassily Ivanchuk were eliminated in round 2 and Gata Kamsky in Round 3 but otherwise things have gone more or less to form. In the playoffs in Round 3 the players Li Chao and Wang Yue were late to the board for the second rapid game and were defaulted. They were apparently on a smoke break. I fundamentally disagree with this rule of defaulting players who are seconds late to the board. These rules are just the latest in the line of rules which essentially are saying events are run for the benefit of arbiters and the players are a damned inconvenience. The whole thinking behind most of the recent changes in rules follow this trend. Even with this rule arbiters should have made sure the players were at the board by informing them of their need to be at the board. We used to have a landlady who used to ring the bell for last orders without warning and often a bit early. She then used to take great pleasure in then refusing to serve people, I'm sure she looked foward to doing it. I can well imagine the arbiters were the same in this event. Gotcha! The defaulting of the Chinese players in these game was for sure their failure, but it was also a total and complete failure of arbiters to do their job also, which is the smooth running of the event, not trying to catch players out.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark
