1) Introduction

My thanks to Adolivio Capece, Alfonso Romero Holmes, Brian Jones, Christophe Philippe, Dave Clayton, Jan Mazuch, Harald Grafenhofer, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Miklos Orso, Philip Adams, Sean Hewitt, Snorri Bergsson, Yuri Vovk and everyone else who helped with the issue.

An amazing week of chess saw Magnus Carlsen destroy the field in the Pearl Spring tournament in Nanjing China. 8/10 should lift him over 2800 and above world champion Viswanathan Anand. This was a huge performance and in the future it may be seen as the start of the stage of full maturity for Carlsen. World number one Veselin Topalov finished a distant second and was a little subdued throughout, but this perhaps wasn't that surprising given Carlsen's performance. If that wasn't enough there was the European Club Cup where many of the World's elite competed. The big individual winner was Peter Svidler with a 2920 performance. 1st Economist-SGSEU-1 Saratov took the title. The website may look a bit of a mess at the moment, we are restoring it after a server upgrade. This has allowed the content management system I've been working on for at least 6 months to become usable. I hope to move to that soon and restore some of the files that are currently missing including most of the previous issues of TWIC. Its been a busy day!

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) 2nd Nanjing Pearl Spring

The 2nd Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament took place 27th Sept - 9th October 2009 in Nanjing, China. Magnus Carlsen dominated the event winning 6 and drawing 4 for an amazing 8/10 score. He was 2.5 points clear of world number 1 Veselin Topalov. There were only three decisive games not involving Carlsen, and Topalov won two of them.

Round 8. Veselin Topalov destroyed Peter Leko with the black pieces. Wang Yue seemed to be surviving against Magnus Carlsen but an extra check on move 59 made a good defence into a losing one. Carlsen leads by two points with only two rounds to go. For the first time there were three decisive results with Dmitry Jakovenko grinding down Teimour Radjabov.

Round 9 Magnus Carlsen drew with black in about 90 minutes against Teimour Radjabov. A theoretical Gruenfeld led to a completely sterile ending after 34 moves. This guarantees Carlsen first place alone with a round to go.

Final Round 10. Carlsen finishes on an amazing 8/10 after beating Dmitry Jakovenko. Topalov finished in second 2.5 points behind after drawing with Radjabov in 95 moves in the final round.

13) Galicia Chess Festival

Phil Adams reports: Galicia Chess Festival, 25-27 September 2009, Orense, Spain. The prize fund was 54,000 euros. They are planning to run it again next year, in Santiago de Compostella.

In the 1970s, Galicia was one of the main areas of Spanish chess activity, hosting many strong international events. More recently, the area has been overshadowed by Linares, Dos Hermanas and Bilbao, but the 2009 Galicia Chess Festival marks the return of major chess events to Galicia. This year the festival was held in the beautiful city of Orense, which hosted some of the strongest Spanish chess tournaments of the 1970s.

The main event consisted of the Fernando Marcote Memorial Rapidplay Open - 7 rounds at 25 minutes plus ten seconds per move increment, followed by splitting into two sections, the top 16 and the rest; ten rounds in all, over three days. The event is named in memory of one of the greatest workers and organizers for chess in Galicia, and the founder of the club that bears his name and which trained such strong players as Paco Vallejo and the up and coming Ivan Salgado. Señor Marcote’s widow and son were present to give their support to the event, as were the President of Galicia, Señor Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the President and Vice-President of Orense County Council, Señor José Luis Baltar and Señor Moisés Blanco.

The very generous prize fund of 54,000 euros attracted a good entry, including 16 GMs. After three days of combat, the winner of the top prize in the Rapidplay of 5000 euros was the well known GM Julio Granda from Peru. The women’s champion was Spain’s Graciela Redondo, who pipped the favourite Elena Sedina from Italy for the 3,000 euros prize; Ms Sedina will not have gone away too unhappy however, since she received the second prize of 1,500 euros, to add to the 1,000 she won in the Blitz event!

Your modestly rated reporter managed to win the Veteran’s prize in the Rapidplay of 120 euros, with a score of 6/10. I gave the Blitz a miss, opting to give my blood pressure the benefit of a relaxing (and free!) catamaran cruise down the beautiful river Miño instead!

The weather was scorching, but the venue, the large Paco Paz sports complex, was fairly cool.

A curious incident occurred in one of the games in the final top 16 section between GM Hamdouchi and IM Ortiz. The game began as normal, then after a few moves Hamdouchi pointed out to his opponent that Ortiz’s king and queen were misplaced. Since this was a rapid game, and more than three moves had been made, Ortiz had to continue the game with his king and queen the wrong way round and his king unable to castle; he lost.

Next year’s event, for which funding has already been assured, will be in the historic pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela, in connection with the celebration of the "Xacobeo 2010". The main mover behind the Festival, IM Roberto Páramos, said: "Next year’s event will be even bigger – come and join us in Santiago!"

48th World Junior Championships

The 48th World Junior Championships (27th for Girls) take place in Mar del Plata, Argentina 21st October - November 4th 2009. No website yet.

There are many junior titles but this is the only one of historic importance. Borislav Ivkov was the first champion, Oscar Panno, Boris Spassky, William Lombardy, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Beliavsky, Tony Miles, Artur Jussupow, Yasser Seirawan, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian are by no means the only well known players to have taken the title over the years. The event is for players under-20. (List: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Junior_Chess_Championship)

These are not to be confused with the World Youth Championships which take place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, November 11th 2009 (arrival) - November 23rd 2009 (departure). These are of less historic interest although the under-18 group is always pretty well fought, there are way too many sections (I'd cut off at under-16 or under-14 and have a more fun based festival for the younger players) the idea of a World under-8 Championship of anything is just not right.
