Kasparov vs Karpov 3

UK Shop - US Shop

1) Introduction

My thanks to Bent Kolvig, Mikhail Golubev, Jan Mazuch, Gujuan Tzu, Bela Lengyel, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Mig Greengard, Lazlo Nagy, Miklos Orso, Robert Fontaine, Jan Lagrain, Susan Polgar, Weng Nian Siow, Zenon Franco Ocampos and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Two retired players having a bit of an exhibition? Well Kasparov vs Karpov is likely to gain a good deal more publicity than that. It remains to be seen what the quality of chess is like. Karpov has struggled with his openings and his now terrible clock handling in recent times, probably as a consquence of his openings. Kasparov just hasn't played at all. They both have prepared seriously so we'll see what happens. The expectation is Kasparov will win easily but until we see him play we won't actually know. Went through 15 years last Thursday. I have a new website set up on a test server but am awaiting an update of the operating system on this site to get it working here. A few things have been left out as I put my effort into trying to get it to work, and I'm dog tired right now, but I'll catch up with things for next week hopefully. Elsewhere Nigel Short and Zahar Efimenko are 1-1 in what looks like an interesting match, and also the Spanish teams have a lot of top players.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Kasparov vs Karpov Match

Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov will play a 12 game (4 Rapid (25'+ 5') and 8 blitz 5'+2') match in Valencia 21st-24th September 2009. The match is on the 25th Anniversary of the start of their infamous first aborted match in Moscow in 1984-5, this was followed by an epic series of close World title matches which ended in Lyon 1990.

Simul today with special guests. Start time for the rapid games 6pm UK time on Tuesday.

Apparently the problems on the official site in some areas (where a placeholder appears) is due to the site not being fully propagated throughout the world and some people are unable to read it properly.

http://www.europe-echecs.com/ will be on the spot with video reports.

44 year old Nigel Short plays 24 year old Zahar Efimenko in a 6 game challenge match in Mukachevo (Ukraine) 20th-26th September 2009 Match organised by UEP.

The first two games of the match were split 1-1 with wins for black in both games. Short went badly astray in the opening, lost the exchange and went down without a fight. In game two he took an initiative as black on the run up to the first time control and finished things off reasonably clinically.

15) John Littlewood 1931-2009

John Littlewood born 25th May 1931 - 16th September 2009 has died at the age of 78. One of the best players of the 1950s and 60s he would have been a Grandmaster in the modern era. He regularly played in the British Championships, played in two Olympiads and scored 5/9 at Hastings. There are some fine tributes from those who know far more about him than I, not least the John Saunders one at the British Chess Magazine which has links to others. Very sad news for British chess.

48th World Junior Championships

The 48th World Junior Championships (27th for Girls) take place in Mar del Plata, Argentina 21st October - November 4th 2009. No website yet.

There are many junior titles but this is the only one of historic importance. Borislav Ivkov was the first champion, Oscar Panno, Boris Spassky, William Lombardy, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Beliavsky, Tony Miles, Artur Jussupow, Yasser Seirawan, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian are by no means the only well known players to have taken the title over the years. The event is for players under-20. (List: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Junior_Chess_Championship)

These are not to be confused with the World Youth Championships which take place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, November 11th 2009 (arrival) - November 23rd 2009 (departure). These are of less historic interest although the under-18 group is always pretty well fought, there are way too many sections (I'd cut off at under-16 or under-14 and have a more fun based festival for the younger players) the idea of a World under-8 Championship of anything is just not right.
