1) Introduction

My thanks to Mikhail Golubev, Hugh Brodie, John Hillery, Bela Lengyel, Luis Blasco de la Cruz, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Miklos Orso, Pavel Matocha, Peter Boel, Petr Pisk, William Townsend and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another big week of chess with the Grand Slam Masters final living up to it's billing and producing some wonderfully hard fought chess. Levon Aronian produced a four game winning run in rounds 2-5 to secure the title with a round to go. The Russian Championship Higher League was also a great event with 11 rounds of quality chess. The Kolkata Open was another great tournament with a surprise winner in Le Quang Liem. The Women's World Team Championship also produced some very interesting chess but the result was somewhat spoiled by what seems to have been a package deal between the Vietnamese and Chinese team in the final round which allowed China to take the title. This week see's the 15th anniversary of TWIC, the first issue was on the 17th of September 1994. I celebrated 750 issues earlier in the year so to go over board seems a little much. However I am hopeful of developing the magazine so it may continue for another 15 years.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Grand Slam Masters Final Bilbao

The 2nd edition of the Grand Slam Masters Final took place in Bilbao, September 5-12th 2009. The winners of the Nanching Pearl Spring, Corus-Wijk aan Zee, Ciudad de Linares and Mtel Masters-Sofia tournaments were due play in the final. However at the last minute Veselin Topalov has withdrawn and was replaced with Levon Aronian.

The tournament was a triumph for Levon Aronian who, although he started with a loss to Alexander Grischuk, had wrapped things up by the end of Round 5 with four wins on the bounce. The shortened tournament was a triumph for the organisers with battling chess, 7 of the 12 games were decisive and the draws were mostly either theoretically important or long. According to live ratings http://chess.liverating.org/ Aronain gained 11 points and moves to 3rd and within 4 points of Anand in 2nd.

5) 4th Kolkata Grandmaster Open 2009

Le Quang Liem took clear first place with 8/10, he drew fairly quickly with Satyapragyan Swayangsu in the final round. Elo favourite Shakhriyar Mamedyarov recovered from a slow start to finish on 7.5/10 (a final round win against Viktor Laznicka helped) level with Anton Filippov who beat Ni Hua in the final round. Nigel Short was a further half point back handing out a fairly brutal beating to Mikheil Mchedlishvili in the final round.

6) Yinzhou Cup World Women Teams 2009

The Women's World Team Championship took place in Yingbo, China 2nd-11th September 2009.

China met bottom placed Vietnam in the final round and drew 2-2. The result was rather odd. Vietnam were at the bottom of the field and it looked like a formality that they would beat them and go on to take the title. Instead the games proceeded for a long time before what appears to be a "package deal" (probably offered by a now panicked Chinese team) of draws which drew the match 2-2. FIDE seem to tolerate such agreements amongst the teams captains in Olympiads. In this case Vientnam had a big advantage on board one and a winning advantage on board four when the draws were agreed with the other two balanced. This is speculation but really the only rational explanation of the result and the games I can come up with. Why Vietnam chose to take the draw is unclear to me. I've been a long term opponent of this kind of deal and this was just about the worst case scenario, they didn't even just halve the match at the start (Russia could have then taken the title with a 4-0 win) but waited until it was, quite frankly, too late, even under the norms of this rather disreputable practice. This draw allowed China to pip Russia for Gold on tie-break. Sadly long term leaders Poland lost for a second time in row and ended up 6th.

12) 131st New York State Championship

The 131st New York State Championship took place 4th-7th September 2009 at the Albany Marriott in Colonie, a suburb of the state capital, Albany. Overall 180 players competed in the four sections. This is down a bit from last year, but still a good turnout all things considered.

Two players finished atop the Open section: GM Giorgi Kacheishvili and Siddharth Ravichandran both scored an undefeated 5-1. They were the only players with 4-0 at the end of round four before drawing each other in the fifth round. In the final round GM Kacheishvili drew GM Joel Benjamin while Ravichandran drew with defending champion IM (GM-Elect) Alex Lenderman. While the two players split the prize money evenly GM Kacheishvili was declared New York State Champion because of slightly better tiebreaks.

Tied for third with 4.5-1.5 were Massachusetts players Marc Esserman and Chris Williams, along with nine-time former champion GM Joel Benjamin and last year’s winner IM Alex Lenderman. Williams won the Under-2,300 prize. Tied for seventh with 4-2 were: FM Igor Nikolayev, Michael Thaler, Ben Dean-Kawamura, Alex Fikiet and Deepak Aaron. These last three named players split the prize for the best player under 2,200.

Tied for twelfth place with 3.5-2.5 were: IM Jay Bonin, FM Alec Getz, Richard Tuhrim, Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, Jayson Lian and James Hiltunen. IM Bonin, a former state champion, was one of the leaders after he upset GM Benjamin in round three, but subsequent losses to GM Kacheishvili and IM Lenderman dropped him back in the pack.

The New York State championship was first held in 1878 and has been run almost every year since then, making it easily the longest running annual tournament in the United States. There are many famous players on the long list of New York State Champions, such as world champion Jose Capablanca (1910) and 5th World Correspondence Champion Hans Berliner (1953). There are nine U.S. Champions on the list, among them Frank Marshall, Arnold Denker, Gata Kamsky, Joel Benjamin and Hikaru Nakamura.

The event was directed by Steve Immitt and Bill and Brenda Goichberg. Full crosstables for the event are posted at the Continental Chess website, the address is: http://www.chesstour.com/nysc09r.htm

26) 1st DOCA FIDE Invitational

The 1st Dean of Chess Academy/TransNet FIDE Invitational began after the New Jersey Futurity on July 11th at the Dean of Chess Academy. The idea was to give several types of players a FIDE rating who may not otherwise get the opportunity to achieve one. Academy members, long-time experts and up-and-coming nationally ranked scholastic players are the three groups meant to have this opportunity. The event is sponsored by TransNet, a local computer company and additional generous funding was provided by Mike Somers.

I misidentified on of the players in TWIC 772. James R West played.

27) Quality Chess Edinburgh International

The Quality Chess international is hosted by Edinburgh Chess Club and takes place 12th-20th September 2009. Play will be from 1pm - 7pm each day. Time control: 40 moves in 2 hours, then one hour to finish. Prize money: 1st £500 2nd £300 3rd £150

Of the games available it appears that Tate, A 0-1 Mitchell, M was initially published with the names the wrong way round in the PGN. In addition I still couldn't get the draw to work even with this correction so it is likely that at least one other game has the players the wrong way round, possibly one of the blank games.

29) Short - Efimenko Match

Chess Match 20 - 26 September 2009 Mukachevo (Ukraine) - Press Release UEP

Among the series of first-class matches organized by Universal Event Promotion we can now count a match between Nigel Short and Zahar Efimenko. These two world class chess players meet each other in the West-Ukrainian town for a classical format match of six games.

The 44-year-old Nigel Short belongs to the greatest of his craft. He caused a stir with numerous successes in his early years and was considered a prodigy. In the World Junior Championship 1980 he won the silver medal behind Garry Kasparov and very soon he became a chess grandmaster at the age of 19, the youngest in the world at that time. After winning several tournaments and his victory against Jan Timman in the Candidates final 1993 he got the opportunity to fight for the highest chess crown. In the match against Garry Kasparov, which took place detached from the World Chess Federation under the aegis of the Professional Chess Association (PCA) and can be considered as the climax in his career, he lost against the mighty Russian 12,5 - 7,5.

Although Short temporarily disappeared from the scene after this defeat he still plays at the highest level to this day and is always a most welcome guest especially because of his dynamic and aggressive play. His current Elo is 2706 whereby he captures the 29th rank in the world.

The 24-year-old Zahar Efimenko belongs to a group of young and talented Ukrainian players. As a youngster, his biggest success was a victory in the World Junior Chess Championship U-14 in Oropesa del Mar. In spite of some strong rivals he plays in the national team and won the Ukrainian championship in 2006. In Germany he is known for his engagement with the Bundesliga team of Werder Bremen. The young Ukrainian, like Short, is known for his constant search for the initiative and for the fact that he has no fear of big names. He is supported by the president of the Universal Event Promotion, Josef Resch, and lives in Mukachevo. His current Elo is 2654 whereby he captures the 83rd rank in the world.

The match between Short and Efimenko promises six high class and exciting games with a totally open result. You can follow the games at the official website of Universal Event Promotion. Will experience prevail against youth in this case? All the games will be covered live and commented on by the experienced Grandmasters Mikhail Golubev and Klaus Bischoff.

48th World Junior Championships

The 48th World Junior Championships (27th for Girls) take place in Mar del Plata, Argentina 21st October - November 4th 2009. No website yet.

There are many junior titles but this is the only one of historic importance. Borislav Ivkov was the first champion, Oscar Panno, Boris Spassky, William Lombardy, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Beliavsky, Tony Miles, Artur Jussupow, Yasser Seirawan, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian are by no means the only well known players to have taken the title over the years. The event is for players under-20. (List: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Junior_Chess_Championship)

These are not to be confused with the World Youth Championships which take place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, November 11th 2009 (arrival) - November 23rd 2009 (departure). These are of less historic interest although the under-18 group is always pretty well fought, there are way too many sections (I'd cut off at under-16 or under-14 and have a more fun based festival for the younger players) the idea of a World under-8 Championship of anything is just not right.
