1) Introduction

My thanks to Miklos Orso, Pavel Makevich, Thomas Henrich, Valery Maes, Adolivio Capece, Axel Fritz, Emmanuel Variniac, Halldor Gretar Einarsson, John Saunders, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Matteo Zoldan Vladimir Malakhov and everyone else who helped with the issue.

There is a fantastic quality of tournaments on show this week. The Grand Slam Masters got under way and one of my favourite players Alexander Grischuk started with 2/2. The Russian Higher League is one below their national championship but puts most events to shame and has offered tremendous value. The Kolkatta Open sees Nigel Short and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov star but headlines on the board have been made by Le Quang Liem who leads with 6/7 and Vladislav Tkachiev who was carried from the board dead drunk in one of the earlier rounds (although there is not much to say in favour of this behaviour I remember seeing him when he turned up with Alexander Morozevich at the Lloyds Bank Masters over a decade ago and I at least repect his chess). There is also some fabulous fighting chess at the Yinzhou Cup World Women Teams. If coverage seems a little perfunctory I've been tremendously busy working on a new website for TWIC which will hopefully arrive pretty soon.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

13) Serbian League

The Serbian League takes place in Kragujevac 1st-11th September 2009. Very strong with players such as Emil Sutovsky, Ferenc Berkes, Viktor Bologan, Zahar Efimenko, Konstantin Sakaev, Ivan Sokolov, Borki Predojevic, Sergei Rublevsky and Evgenij Miroshnichenko play. I was somewhat amused to see that the two players called Milos Pavlovic have exactly the same rating. That's one check I can't use.

16) 51st Imperia Festival

The 51st Chess Festival in Imperia (Liguria, Italy) celebrated it's 51st anniversary. It is the oldest open in Italy and possibly the oldest in Europe; all the editions have occurred without a break.

It took place August 30th - September 6th 2009. 9 rounds.

Adolivio Capece reports: In the international tournament in Imperia played 160 players from more than 10 countries in 4 groups. Winner of the Master group was GM Movsziszian from Armenia with 7 points (winner also in 2008) Second place - also with 7 points - for IM Salvador (Philippine) 3-4. GM Sanchez (Phil) GM Sulava (Cro- winner 2006 and 2007)) 6.5 5-8. GM Chatalbashev (Bul) IM Okhotnik (Fra) FM Lacrosse (Bel) FM Molina (Ita) 6.

A couple of days before there was the presentation of the book on the first 50 editions, written by Antonino Faraci. A very interesting book, really important for every player and expecially for chess collectors; with all the results, games and photos To get more informations or to order the book please send an email to scacchi.imperia@libero.it

John Saunders reports an error in TWIC 768 the SCO-ch download, round 4, in the pairing Murdochy,Shivan - Hughes, Rh. In fact, Black was Lloyd Hughes, rated 1834, who only played that one game in the tournament (presumably a stand-in).

24) Forthcoming Events and Links

The London Chess Classic in December

New London tournament to be in the Olympia Conference Centre. [Press release 21st July 2009]

I am delighted to announce that the London Chess Classic 2009 will be staged at one of London's most prestigious venues; the Olympia Conference Centre. Olympia will provide excellent facilities including a 400 seat soundproof auditorium, two commentary rooms and multimedia presentation. There will be ample space for Open, weekend and Speed Chess tournaments plus junior training which will run alongside the main event from December 8th-15th inclusive.

The London Chess Classic 2009 will be the highest level tournament in London for 25 years and will be the first in a series of events designed to increase enthusiasm for chess in the UK and promote the game and its undoubted educational benefits in schools and communities. It is also our objective to bring the world championship to London in the Olympic year 2012.

England's four leading Grandmasters; Michael Adams, Nigel Short, Luke McShane and David Howell will be pitched against a world class field that includes a former world champion Vladimir Kramnik and 18 year old Magnus Carlsen ranked world number three and widely seen a future holder of the world crown. One of China's finest players; Ni Hua and the US Champion Hikaru Nakamura, complete the field.

Spectators will be treated to live commentary on the games from Grandmasters and will be able to play tournament or informal games all day. Ticket information will be available in September. For those who cannot attend there be will live coverage and commentary on the games on the internet.

Update on ratings 2nd Sept 2009

2nd September 2009: Following the publication of the September FIDE Rating List the London Chess is just a total of ten rating points (amongst the 8 players) shy of FIDE category 19 (2701 and above) with the players having an average rating of a fraction just under 2700. Of the eight Grandmasters only two; Michael Adams and Ni Hua have lost rating points since I sent their invitations. Thanks to the recent successes of Nigel Short, Hikaru Nakamura and Vladimir Kramnik the average rating of the players has jumped significantly.

48th World Junior Championships

The 48th World Junior Championships (27th for Girls) take place in Mar del Plata, Argentina 21st October - November 4th 2009. No website yet.

There are many junior titles but this is the only one of historic importance. Borislav Ivkov was the first champion, Oscar Panno, Boris Spassky, William Lombardy, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Beliavsky, Tony Miles, Artur Jussupow, Yasser Seirawan, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian are by no means the only well known players to have taken the title over the years. The event is for players under-20. (List: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Junior_Chess_Championship)

These are not to be confused with the World Youth Championships which take place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, November 11th 2009 (arrival) - November 23rd 2009 (departure). These are of less historic interest although the under-18 group is always pretty well fought, there are way too many sections (I'd cut off at under-16 or under-14 and have a more fun based festival for the younger players) the idea of a World under-8 Championship of anything is just not right.
