1) Introduction

My thanks to Herman Van de Wynkele, Aaron Kiedes, Jakub Fuksik, Andrey Terekhov, Haroon Rashid, Efstratios Grivas, Ian Rogers, Spiros Ilandzis, Gabor Kallai, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Mark Berkovich, Mikhail Kozakov, Mitko Iliev, Philippe Dornbusch, Robert Fontaine, Sean Hewitt, Hal Bond and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another very busy week. Vassily Ivanchuk showed his return to form by winning the FIDE Grand Prix tournament in Jermuk. After dropping to 30 in the world apparently he will be back in the top 10, maybe at number 5. Ivanchuk on form is close to being my favourite player, he plays the game absolutely without compromise and with great creativity. A true star. Zuerich saw the many of the games biggest stars past and present turn out this weekend firstly with a simultaneous exhibition (Kasparov, Anand, Topalov to name but three) and then the following day there was a rapid where Vladimir Kramnik edged out Viswanathan Anand. The NH experience vs youth tournament in Amsterdam is at it's half way stage. The experience team has been beefed up this year and they lead by two points at the half way stage. There is really too much more to mention but there is again plenty to look at.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

18) 1st DOCA FIDE Invitational

The 1st Dean of Chess Academy/TransNet FIDE Invitational began after the New Jersey Futurity on July 11th at the Dean of Chess Academy. The idea was to give several types of players a FIDE rating who may not otherwise get the opportunity to achieve one. Academy members, long-time experts and up-and-coming nationally ranked scholastic players are the three groups meant to have this opportunity. The event is sponsored by TransNet, a local computer company and additional generous funding was provided by Mike Somers.

The event is a ten player round robin which gives the players the feel of a top-level international event. If successful, Dean plans on running more such events and eventually FIDE open events where players will have the opportunity to achieve IM norms.

The London Chess Centre is pleased to announce that the line up for the London Chess Classic 2009 is complete after GM David Howell of England accepted his invitation. This creates a balance to the event, an eight player all play all, with four world class players pitched against England's four highest rated Grandmasters. Using the latest available ratings and information supplied by the players on their recent successes, the tournament rating average is currently well above 2690 and may reach 2700 by December.

Nigel Short and Hikaru Nakamura are both in great shape. Nigel recently dominated the Sigeman tournament at Malmo and Hikaru won the US Championship held at St Louis. Vladimir Kramnik was top scorer at the Azerbaijan v Rest of the World match with 6.5/8.

Play begins Tuesday December 8th and runs until Tuesday December 15th 2009.

The venue for what will be the most prestigious chess tournament in the capital for 25 years will be announced shortly.
