1) Introduction

My thanks to Adam Raoof, Adolivio Capece, Amro Al matmati, Brindza Istvan, Radu-Catalin Chirila, Dinu-Ioan Nicula, Jan Mazuch, Emmanuel Variniac, Frank Berry, George Perez, Harry Schaack, Hassan Khaled, Holger Lieske, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Remco Hekhuis, Jan Krabbenbos, Steve Giddins, Roland Wimmer, Eric van Reem and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Yet another busy week of chess. The Chess Classic Mainz is the vision of Hans-Walter Schmitt. The event reflects his ideas, advocacy of chess960, his ideas on how chess should be presented and the kind of player he wants to invite. He was rewarded with a very interesting event, Hikaru Nakamura beat reigning chess960 champion Levon Aronian. Aronian however went on to break a far more longstanding record when he dethroned Viswanathan Anand, who had won every year since 2000 and a couple of times before that too. Anand didn't even reach the final after he made life very difficult for himself by losing his first two games of the preliminary section. Instead Ian Nepomniachtchi reached the final but his rather wild and inconsistant style presented no problems to Aronian who won with ease. Schmitt already has sponsorship for next year's event lined up and no doubt both Anand and Aronian will be back to do battle along with Mamedyarov who after many years of trying finally won the Ordix Open.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave had the best result of his career when he won the Biel tournament above Alexander Morozevich and Vassily Ivanchuk who both had moments of greatness but played far less reliably than the winner. Vachier beat Morozevich in round 8 from a lost position and this in retrospect was the key moment of the tournament. That's not to criticise the winner who was the only undefeated player.

There is plenty of other chess elsewhere also including the British Championships which seems to be a two horse race between David Howell and Gawain Jones.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Chess Classic Mainz

The Chess Classic Mainz took place 27th July - 2nd August 2009 in the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz. Levon Aronian lost his Chess960 Rapid World Championship to Hikaru Nakamura but was more than compensated by winning the 14th Grenkeleasing Rapid World Championship instead. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won a keenly fought Ordix Open with a record equalling score of 10/11.

14th Grenkeleasing Rapid World Championship

The main event was the 14th Grenkeleasing Rapid World Championship which took place 31st July -2nd August 2009. Viswanathan Anand, Levon Aronian, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Arkadij Naiditsch played.

Day 1. Aronian and Nepomniachtchi started with 2/2. The main shock was that Anand started with 0/2 and in both games he had white! In the final round of the day Anand beat Naidisch and the two leaders drew.

Day 2. Anand had won this event 11 times, and was defending champion but was out of the running to win the event after being eleminated in the preliminaries. Anand has won the title every year since Kasparov won in 1999, He tried long and hard against Nepomniachtchi in Round 5 but had to settle for a draw. Nepomniachtchi drew against Aronian in the final round to secure his place in the final.

Levon Aronian beat Ian Nepomniachtchi comfortably in the final, he won the first two games and drew the other 2 to take the title 3-1. Viswanathan Anand and Arkadij Naiditsch drew all four of their games and shared 3rd place.

In the preliminaries Aronian (who scored 3/3 on day 1 and 1/3 on day 2) and Nakamura finished on 4/6. They then met in the final where Nakamura was the convincing winner standing 3-0 after the first three games before a final draw and thus taking the title 3.5 - 0.5. 3) Biel Chess Festival

The 42nd Biel International Chess Festival took place 18th-31st July 2009. There were around 10 different Tournaments (Open, Rapid, Blitz, Youth and for the first time Chess 960).

In Round 8 Alexander Morozevich had a winning position against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave but went wrong in time trouble and lost. This turned out to be the decisive moment as there was only one further decisive game in the tournament when Morozevich won in round 9. Thus in the best result of his career so far Maxime Vachier-Lagrave took clear first place with 6/10 half a point clear of the field.

Boris Grachev won the MTO Open with 8.5/11. In the Generations Scheveningen tournament the Swiss Senior team beat the Swiss Junior Team 28.5-21.5.

17) 20th International Chess and Games Festival Czech Open

The 20th International Chess and Games Festival Czech Open 2009 took place 16th July - 2nd August 2009 in Pardubice (the Czech Republic). There were more than 100 tournaments in chess and other games, eg. European Youth Chess Teams Championship, ISCU Children Clubs Chess Championship and European Amateurs Championship in Chess.

Official site: http://www.czechopen.net/news/index.php.

The Rapid tournament was won by Konstantin Chernyshov with 8/9.

I couldn't find IM Alexey Choss nor Jahangir Agharahimov in the FIDE rating list in spite of both being reasonably highly rated according the http://chess-results.com. I'm a bit puzzled how you could be an active IM like Choss and not be in the rating list unless he changed his name.

The European youth team championship U18 for boys were won by Hungary, Poland won the women's event.

Anton Korobov won the main A-tournament with 8/9.

30) Swiss Championships

The 109th Swiss Individual Chess Championships took place in Graechen 9th-17th July 2009. Simon Williams finished in clear first place with 7½/9. He was half a point clear of Viktor Korchnoi who took the Swiss title on tie-break. There were 300 players in four sections, 111 played in the top group. I give the table again because I messed up somehow when I first released TWIC and had the British table here for reasons I just don't understand.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich celebrates 200th anniversary with spectacular jubilee events.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, the world's oldest chess club, celebrates its 200th year in 2009 with spectacular jubilee events. To mark the anniversary, some of the greatest masters of the last five decades, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand, will play at the event. Highlights will be a simultaneous exhibition and a rapid chess tournament on the 22nd and 23rd of August, held in Zurich Main Railway Station. With generous sponsor support from Credit Suisse the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich continues its long standing tradition of world class chess tournaments.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, in simultaneous games 200 amateurs will be honoured to face eight word-class chess players, who have made historical contributions to world chess over the last 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov. On Sunday the 23rd of August, these champions will compete against each other in an exciting rapid chess format. Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player ever, and Werner Hug of Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, former world junior chess champion, will replace Kasparov and Spassky, who have retired from competitive chess.

A huge number of spectators, from enthusiasts to the generally curious, is expected for the events at Zurich Railway Main Station. And no one need miss it: All commemorative events will be streamed live via Internet.
