1) Introduction

My thanks to Aleksander Czerwonski, Arvydas Baltrunas, Bab Stef, Dave Clayton, David Llada, Jan Mazuch, Thomas Ducret, Emmanuel Variniac, Frank Berry, George Perez, Harry Schaack, Hassan Khaled, Igor Glek, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Javier Rubio, Keith Ruxton, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Martin Matthiesen, Mikel Larreategi, Lazlo Nagy, Patricia Claros Aguilar, Peter Boel, Ram Soffer, Sergey Tiviakov and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The chess just keeps coming. Hikaru Nakamura won the Donostia tournament but only after beating Ruslan Ponomariov in a two game blitz playoff. Still this is probably his best result to date and with invitations finally coming in he has power to add. The Biel Chess Festival started yesterday. Alexander Morozevich started with two whites and two wins, but the event is only just getting started. Lake Sevan saw some good chess and there were a host of starts in Israel for a Rapid and Blitz event as part of the Maccabiah Games. The summer program is defintely in full swing with many, many opens all over Europe including the Scottish Championships which were a great success with their innovation of allowing foreigners to play aswell in the open part of the tournament.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Biel Chess Festival

The 42nd Biel International Chess Festival takes place 18th-31st July 2009. There will be around 10 different Tournaments (Open, Rapid, Blitz, Youth and for the first time Chess 960). The main Category IXX tournament sees Morozevich, Ivanchuk, Gelfand, Alekseev, Vachier-Lagrave and Caruana compete.

Biel Round 1 Alexander Morozevich opened with a win against Evgeny Alekseev. Boris Gelfand against Fabiano Caruana was agreed drawn in a good looking position for Gelfand but he was offered a draw in time trouble. In Round 2 Alexander Morozevich had a second go with the white pieces and was the only winner again, defeating Boris Gelfand who dropped a piece to a trivial tactic in an innocuous position.

5) 116th Scottish Chess Championships (International Open)

The strongest ever Scottish Championship was the International Open 116th Scottish Chess Championships ( International Open) - 11th to 19th July 2009 Prestigious central venue, Edinburgh City Chambers, hosted the strongest ever Scottish Chess Championships 2009 from 11th to 19th July.

S Arun Prasad defeated Magesh Chandran Panchanathan in the final round (in one of the last games to finish) to take clear first place on 7.5/9. Joint leader Mark Hebden drew, held by early leader Gudmundur Kjartansson. Iain Gourlay was the top finishing Scotsman so he took the national title.

Round 9 by Keith Ruxton

The three players tied at the top (Prasad, Panchanathan and Hebden) knew that only a win would guarantee them first place so short draws were definitely not on the agenda. The two Indian players were paired against one another and it didn't take long for the drama to begin as Black (Panchanathan) blundered an exchange on move 11 in a well known opening trap. As soon as he made his blunder your reporter was besieged by players from the U-1500 section asking 'Why can't White just play 12. Ng5?' Well, he can, and he did! (1-0).

This meant that English GM Hebden had to win his game to tie for first place. Mark was paired against the in-form Icelandic FM Kjartansson who only needed a draw to secure a Grandmaster norm. A wild game delighted the spectators once more but, despite Hebden's best efforts, Gudmundur managed to hold the draw and get his norm.

With Prasad winning the Open title there was still the matter of who would win the Scottish Championship. Five players were tied at the top going into this round but with Shaw and Thomson losing and then Keti Arakhamia-Grant losing on time on move 39l, it all came down to the game Iain Gourlay versus Jonathan Grant. FM Gourlay played a very confident and well controlled game to win his first Scottish title - congratulations Iain!

Richard Riordan Chess Festival

The main Richard Riordan Chess Festival (Mayor of the City of Los Angeles 1993-2001) saw a Rapid Chess (15m/game + 5s per move) tournament July 12th-14th 2009.

In spite of final round problems Evgeniy Najer won the Richard Riordan GM Rapid with 9.5/12. In the final round Najer was lost after only 15 moves against Emil Sutovsky who lost almost every other round. Fortunately for him Ian Nepomniachtchi, the only player in a position to catch him was also completely busted at the same time. They both lost in short order. Nepomniachtchi still took clear 2nd on 8.5/12.

14) 8th Condom Chess Festival

The 8th Condom Chess Festival took place 11th-18th July 2009. Colomban Vitoux took first place on tie-break in the IM tournament from Axel Delorme (these two had identical results in the event I'm guessing Vitou took first as he was the lower rated of the two so his performance was better) and Said Brih in the IM tournament. Marius Manolache took clear first place in the open with 7.5/9. Games from the final round of the open A not yet available. My thanks to Thomas Ducret for the games.

15) World Chess Tour GM Moscow

Two player made norms in the first GM round-robin tournament of "World Chess Tour" Series which took place in Moscow 4th-12th July 2009. The playing venue is the sport-leisure center "Alexeevsky" (Moscow, Prospect Mira, 120) Middle Elo is 2442.

The winner of the first GM tournament was IM Mikhail Krylov. Unfortunately he was half a point short of a GM norm. In the last round with white he could not break the resistance of GM Rufat Bagirov. Another challenger for the GM Norm - FM Pavel Dvalishvili - also had White in last round but even lost his game against IM Gavrilov who was very unlucky in this event but in this game he finally played to his usual level. But Pavel at least should be satisfied with fact that he made finally his 3rd IM norm (despite having big sight problems) exceeding the norm by a half point.

16-year-old FM Ivan Aldokhin was leading after 5 rounds - he had +3 - one step away from the GM-Norm, but at the end of tournament Ivan was not so successful. However he also made an IM-Norm with an extra half point. It is interesting that both lucky players - Aldokhin and Dvalishvili - played well in the famous Moscow Open last February and should make IM-Norms with reserve too, but due the fact that they didn’t get opponents in the first round (it’s still difficult to say, whos fault more more - Tournaments Management or Arbiters) the FIDE Qualification Committee refused ratify a Norm. Now I believe the justice triumphed.

It was the first event of new World Series 'World Chess Tour', the main idea of that is: any chess player and chess fan regardless of the level, age etc. can take part in the World Series as well as any chess event can be part of World Series - like the ACP Tour, but not only for top-GMs, but just for everyone. We present here also the WCT points which every participant of this event will get - in all possible categories. The next GM and IM events are planned for 8th-18th of August 2009.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich celebrates 200th anniversary with spectacular jubilee events.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, the world's oldest chess club, celebrates its 200th year in 2009 with spectacular jubilee events. To mark the anniversary, some of the greatest masters of the last five decades, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand, will play at the event. Highlights will be a simultaneous exhibition and a rapid chess tournament on the 22nd and 23rd of August, held in Zurich Main Railway Station. With generous sponsor support from Credit Suisse the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich continues its long standing tradition of world class chess tournaments.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, in simultaneous games 200 amateurs will be honoured to face eight word-class chess players, who have made historical contributions to world chess over the last 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov. On Sunday the 23rd of August, these champions will compete against each other in an exciting rapid chess format. Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player ever, and Werner Hug of Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, former world junior chess champion, will replace Kasparov and Spassky, who have retired from competitive chess.

A huge number of spectators, from enthusiasts to the generally curious, is expected for the events at Zurich Railway Main Station. And no one need miss it: All commemorative events will be streamed live via Internet.

The jubilee commences with an open tournament; certain to be one of the most exciting open chess tournaments of 2009. Players of every skill level, from beginners to the elite world class, are expected and will be welcomed at the Zurich Kongresshaus from August 9th to the 15th, 2009. They will compete in two tournaments, 9 rounds each, for CHF 100.000 guaranteed prize money and many attractive prizes.

To further honour the occasion, Richard Forster, reputable chess historian, will release his comprehensive book, researched in great detail, on the unique history of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich. Entitled "Schachgesellschaft Zuerich: 1809 bis 2009", Forster's work will analyze the development of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich from the times of Napoleon to the present day.
