1) Introduction

My thanks to Alexandra Wilson, Ali Nihat Yazici, Haroon or Rashid, Chris Bird, Christian Rohrer, David Llada, Denis Vretenar, Diego Garces, Richard Berube, Eirik T Gullaksen, Holger Lieske, Igor Glek, Spiros Ilandzis, Hector Francovig, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Marcelo Pagano, Michael Meinders, Tamas Nagy, Roland Wimmer, Jonathan Grant, Sean Sheahan, Simon Williams, Yuri Zimmerman, Zenon Franco Ocampos and everyone else who helped with the issue.

There is normally a lot of chess at this time of year as the summer open season starts. It isn't normally the season for big events but we will have two this week. Magnus Carlsen leads at the half way stage of the Dortmund international, half a point clear of Peter Leko and Vladimir Kramnik. In Donostia (San Sebastian) another tournament starts tomorrow with Svidler, Ponomariov, Movsesian, Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave, Vallejo Pons, Kasimdzhanov, Granda Zuniga, Karpov and San Segundo Carrillo. The FIDE rating list came out at the start of last week and whilst there wasn't much of a change at the very top we saw former World Champion Anatoly Karpov drop out of the top 100, he needs a good performance to stop this happening. Hikaru Nakamura spent the two days before he travelled out scoring 6/7 at the World Open, two half point byes gave him a tie for first place with Evgeny Najer who took first as his opponent wasn't around for the blitz playoff. I don't really think you should be able to take byes in the final two rounds of an open where the prizes are normally settled, but that's the World Open for you and you can't blame Nakamura at all for playing. The Greek Team Championships sees Vassily Ivanchuk star, he hardly seems to stop for breath between tournaments. So plenty of interest this week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) World Open

The World Open Chess Tournament took place June 29th - July 5th 2009 in Philadelphia.

The Official site reports:

"GM Evgeny Najer beat GM Jaan Ehlvest to secure a 1st place tie with GM Hikaru Nakamura, who had taken two half-point byes on the final day as he jetted off to another tournament. GMs Ilya Smirin and Varuzhan Akobian agreed to a draw a little earlier, missing out on the chance to join the winners while GM Victor Mikhalevski, who could also catch the leaders with a win, lost to GM Jiri Stocek.

There would normally be an Armageddon blitz play-off to decide the overall Champion and for a little extra money but with Nakamura no longer in Philadelphia, unfortunately this will not happen and thus Najer will once again be crowned World Open Champion having won the title last year.

Norm Update: IMs Alex Lenderman and Leonid Gerzhoy both secured the draws they needed in the final round to each earn a GM norm. This was Lenderman's final GM norm he needed and since he has already achieved the required 2500 FIDE rating he should become America's next GM. IM norms were achieved by FM Bindi Cheng and FM Michael Lee."

I've always found the World Open a bit odd. Multiple schedules, re-entries allowed and so forth. So what to make of Hikaru Nakamura's tournament? Turns up one day plays 5 g/45 minute games to get in contention, plays two proper games the following day (quick draw and a win), then takes two half point byes in the final two rounds to share first place and is already flying to Donostia before the tournament ends. I guess my main reaction is "What kind of tournament is this?"

5) FIDE July 2009 Ratings

Source: http://www.fide.com. The full list is available for download there.

The July rating list sees Veselin Topalov hold firm as number one with an increase of a point. World Champion Viswanathan Anand has a couple of games and gains 5 points. Magnus Carlsen holds at three. Levon Aronian jumps to 4 in the world and Dmitry Jakovenko to 5 ahead of Vladimir Kramnik who didn't play in this quarter. Peter Svidler jumps back up to 12 in the world, a position formally held by Vassily Ivanchuk who had a catastrophic quarter dropping to 30 in the world. His win in Bazna is hopefully a sign of a return to form and that will be included next time. I saw some discussion that they were discussing changing the calculation of the list involving the k-factor (FIDE had a meeting recently) but apparently this didn't go through. It is a bit astonishing that 2635 would have been enough to be in the top 100 last time, now this mark has risen to 2641. Karpov has dropped from 86 to 98 in the world without playing a game. Towards the middle of the list the changes don't seem so dramatic however. Apparently the most likely explanation is a blip. They are moving to a list coming out every two months either now or very shortly.

Zuerich Chess Club 200th Anniversary

Visit the official website look at a quiz with information contained in Richard Forster's recently published book "Schachgesellschaft Zürich: 1809 bis 2009" the prize of playing in a Simul against a chess legend.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich celebrates 200th anniversary with spectacular jubilee events.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, the world's oldest chess club, celebrates its 200th year in 2009 with spectacular jubilee events. To mark the anniversary, some of the greatest masters of the last five decades, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand, will play at the event. Highlights will be a simultaneous exhibition and a rapid chess tournament on the 22nd and 23rd of August, held in Zurich Main Railway Station. With generous sponsor support from Credit Suisse the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich continues its long standing tradition of world class chess tournaments.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, in simultaneous games 200 amateurs will be honoured to face eight word-class chess players, who have made historical contributions to world chess over the last 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov. On Sunday the 23rd of August, these champions will compete against each other in an exciting rapid chess format. Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player ever, and Werner Hug of Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, former world junior chess champion, will replace Kasparov and Spassky, who have retired from competitive chess.

A huge number of spectators, from enthusiasts to the generally curious, is expected for the events at Zurich Railway Main Station. And no one need miss it: All commemorative events will be streamed live via Internet.

The jubilee commences with an open tournament; certain to be one of the most exciting open chess tournaments of 2009. Players of every skill level, from beginners to the elite world class, are expected and will be welcomed at the Zurich Kongresshaus from August 9th to the 15th, 2009. They will compete in two tournaments, 9 rounds each, for CHF 100.000 guaranteed prize money and many attractive prizes.

To further honour the occasion, Richard Forster, reputable chess historian, will release his comprehensive book, researched in great detail, on the unique history of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich. Entitled "Schachgesellschaft Zuerich: 1809 bis 2009", Forster's work will analyze the development of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich from the times of Napoleon to the present day.

The 2nd Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament will takes place 27th Sept - 9th October 2009 in Nanjing, China. The field is in disarray after it appears that Veselin Topalov and Viswanathan Anand are no longer playing.

The field seems to be Magnus Carlsen, Teimour Radjabov, Dmitry Jakovenko, Wang Yue and possibly Judit Polgar but who knows what brought about this change of mind from the top players and therefore what other players might be missing.

The 7th Howard Staunton Memorial takes place 7th (opening ceremony) - 17th August 2009. This year there will be a UK vs The Netherlands double round Scheveningen match and an interesting Category IX all-play-all. The UK has a small Elo rating advantage in the Scheveningen match but the teams are well matched. The tournament is taking place in its usual venue - Simpson's In The Strand. The opening ceremony will take place on the evening of Friday 7th August. The final rounds and the closing ceremony will take place on Monday 17th August.

The organisers are hoping that the tournament will be a big media event with the Chinese and the Dutch Ambassadors hoping to attend the opening ceremony and surprise guest visits from other chess loving celebrities throughout. They thank their generous benefactor.

There will be live coverage of the games this year.
