Big Mega

My 60 Memorable Games

ChessBase Now Out

1) Introduction

My thanks to Leonid Galperin, Esteve Ribalta Bertran, Richard Reich, Sinisa Joksic, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Bela Lengyel, Miklos Orso, Tinni, Neuris Delgado, Adolivio Capece, Axel Fritz, Gorka Bravo, Kevin Hyde, Dinu-Ioan Nicula and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Although there is a reasonable amount of chess this week, its pretty much all about next week with the Veselin Topalov against Gata Kamsky match to decide who plays Viswanathan Anand for his world title heading the agenda, just ahead of the Aeroflot Open which starts on the same day, then the Linares tournament starts a couple of days later. So we certainly can't complain about lack of chess next week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Topalov - Kamsky Candidates Match

Veselin Topalov plays Gata Kamsky in Sofia in an 8 game match for the right to play World Champion Viswanathan Anand later in the year. The match takes place 17th-27th February with playoffs on the 28th if required.

Official site: http://www.wccc2009.com/

3) Aeroflot Open

The mega Aeroflot Open takes place in Moscow 16th February (the day of arrival) to 27th February 2009 (the day of departure).

Official site: http://www.aeroflotchess.com/

4) XXVI Linares

The XXVI Linares 2009 tournament will take place only in Spain this year (their co-operation with Morelia in Mexico was ended last year). The tournament takes place 18th February - 8th March 2009 and has 314,000 Euros in prizes. There are no appearance fees for the players. The winner takes 100,000 Euros and the trophy 2nd and 3rd take 75,000 and 50,000 Euros.

World Champion Viswanathan Anand defends the Linares title after winning the event last year. Other players are Vassily Ivanchuk, Magnus Carlsen, Teimour Radjabov, Levon Aronian, Wang Yue, Alexander Grischuk and Leinier Dominguez Perez.

5) UEP bid for Candidates and World title matches

Whilst there hasn't been anything settled for the World Championship match for this year between Anand and the winner of Kamsky and Topalov, perhaps understandably, although given the economy worryingly, FIDE have announced the bidding process for the 2010 Candidates tournament and 2011 World Championship match and they've already received a bid from UEP (http://www.uep-chess.com/) the organisers of Kramnik - Leko in Brissago and Anand - Kramnik in Bonn. FIDE discuss the UEP bid and the process at: http://www.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/3748-uep-make-bid-for-candidates-2010-and-world-championship-2011

6) 80th German Championship

The 80th German Championship took place in Saarbruecken 5th-15th February 2009. Arik Braun took first place on tie-break from Michael Prusikin after both finished on 7/9. Correction to the result of Boidman - Hort from last week.

22) Grand Slam Association Announcements

There was a press release from the Grand Slam Association on February 4th, summarising: Bilbao will host the Grand Slam Masters final again this year The Pearl Spring Chess Tournament of Nanjing, China (2008), has joined the Grand Slam Chess Association in 2009. This means Veselin Topalov's win in China and Sergey Karjakin's win in the Corus Tournament 2009 in Wijk ann Zee (Netherlands) have qualified them already for the Bilbao Masters Final. Nanjing 2009 will be the first tournament of the Grand Slam 2010.

Other decisions of the meeting of the representatives of the Grand Slam in Wijk ann Zee is the concern of the organisers about the unfought draws during the Corus tournament, as well as early triple-repetition of the position placed in other tournaments where the Sofia’s Rule has been applied. By common agreement, all the tournaments of the Grand Slam will apply the Sofia’s Rule from the 2010 edition onwards, and other regulations will be considered in order to fight against this practice.

23) 32 Pieces: The Art Of Chess

PRESS RELEASE by Larry List

Artists of all eras and cultures have been interested in chess, "the Royal Game" of rulers, soldiers, prisoners, and exiles. From the early 20th century to the present this interest has paralleled major social (re)evolutions, with artists increasingly using chess imagery and ideas in their art. During such times, chess has provided a universally acknowledged societal model in miniature, that artists re-design based on patterns of love, war, and play. Sigmund Freud viewed chess as parallel to psychoanalysis - a mapping of the mind - while French-born Marcel Duchamp saw chess as art. In 1944, art theorist Andre Breton insisted that "...what must be changed is the game, itself, not the pieces." The Fluxus artists of the 1960’s made a grand gameof- making-the-game and transformed chess into a sensory questioning of identities.

In this exhibition, prominent contemporary artists Fryer, Kruger and Turk push the boundaries of interactivity while Kusama, Tunga, Clegg, the Chapman brothers and Cattelan explore mental states, real or imagined. Emin and Ronay transmute chess courtship rituals into heated intimacies and through serious or nonsensical creative play Mackie, Hirst, Whiteread, Friedman and McCarthy each reconstruct a new identity based on the game via the deconstruction of a chosen environment.

Marcel Proust once explained that what is needed is not a new landscape, but, rather, a new vision. These leading contemporary artists offer new viewpoints from which to reconsider the creative social landscape through chess, while the timeless conceptual landscape of "the Royal Game" stands ever-ready to lend itself to future visions.

The exhibition is co-curated by Larry List, Mark Sanders and Julia Royse for the Reykjavik Art Museum in Iceland (24 January - 12 April 2009) Catalogue will be available from the end of February 09.

Zuerich Chess Club 200th Anniversary

Dr. Christian Rohrer reports: The world's oldest chess club celebrates its 200th year with spectacular jubilee events, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich celebrates 200th anniversary with spectacular jubilee events

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, the world's oldest chess club, celebrates its 200th year in 2009 with spectacular jubilee events. To mark the anniversary, some of the greatest masters of the last five decades, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand, will play at the event. Highlights will be a simultaneous exhibition and a rapid chess tournament on the 22nd and 23rd of August, held in Zurich Main Railway Station. With generous sponsor support from Credit Suisse the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich continues its long standing tradition of world class chess tournaments.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, in simultaneous games 200 amateurs will be honoured to face eight word-class chess players, who have made historical contributions to world chess over the last 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov. On Sunday the 23rd of August, these champions will compete against each other in an exciting rapid chess format. Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player ever, and Werner Hug of Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, former world junior chess champion, will replace Kasparov and Spassky, who have retired from competitive chess.

A huge number of spectators, from enthusiasts to the generally curious, is expected for the events at Zurich Railway Main Station. And no one need miss it: All commemorative events will be streamed live via Internet.

The jubilee commences with an open tournament; certain to be one of the most exciting open chess tournaments of 2009. Players of every skill level, from beginners to the elite world class, are expected and will be welcomed at the Zurich Kongresshaus from August 9th to the 15th, 2009. They will compete in two tournaments, 9 rounds each, for CHF 100.000 guaranteed prize money and many attractive prizes.

To further honour the occasion, Richard Forster, reputable chess historian, will release his comprehensive book, researched in great detail, on the unique history of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich. Entitled "Schachgesellschaft Zuerich: 1809 bis 2009", Forster's work will analyze the development of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich from the times of Napoleon to the present day.

ICC and FICS client for mobile phones

Mats Luthman has written a program that connects to ICC and FICS, compatable with many modern mobile phones. I've been looking for something like this for a while for watching live tournaments if I'm out and about. Its a nice free solution, you can also play but I haven't tried that.
