1) Introduction

My thanks to Mihajlo Savic, Thomas Henrich, Haroon Or Rashid, Alin Campeanu, Miklos Orso, Bela Lengyel, Aard Daanen, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Emmanuel Variniac, Luis Scalise, Bartlomiej Macieja, Olivier Breisacher, Hugh Brodie, Jonathan Berry, Tarjei J. Svensen, Anna Burtasova, Dave Clayton and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another monster week of chess, in fact I didn't even have time to cover all the events I know of. If you think I've missed anything please let me know again. Its hard even to do justice to the elite events. The 2nd FIDE Grand Prix event is taking place in Sochi with Radjabov and Cheparinov having the early lead with 3/4. World Champion Viswanathan Anand was dominant in Mainz thumping Magnus Carlsen 3-1 in the final. Carlsen arrived from Biel where he didn't win as expected, instead Evgeny Alekseev came up on the rails to catch Leinier Dominguez Perez and then beat him in a playoff. Then there is the avalanche of summer opens, national championships (did I mention the British?). Oh yes and the Gyorgy Marx Memorial won by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and the North Urals Cup won by Antoaneta Stefanova and very well presented and publicised and the organisers claim the strongest ever women's event. I could go on but I'm tired!

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

37) Dresden ZMD Open

The ZMD Open took place in Dresden 19th-27th July 2008. Ehsan Ghaem Maghami won the event.

Last week I couldn't find the rules for the tournament but they are here.

The event was a 9 rounds Swiss - knock out system. The loser of the knock out continues playing in the Swiss tournament. Points reached in the knock out are taken over into the Swiss tournament.

90 min 40 moves/ 30 min till drop of the flag From the first move will add per each move 30 sec. In case of a draw a rapid game (25min plus 10s per move) with opposite colours will take place. Should the rapid game end in a draw as well, a decisive Blitz match has to be played. White has 4 min, black 3 min plus additional 2s per move for each player. For black a draw is sufficient to remain in the knock out system. The winner of the match gets a full point (the loser none) even though the normal game ended drawn.

3rd NH Chess Tournament

The 3rd NH Chess Tournament takes place in Amsterdam August 20th-30th, 2008. The venue of this clash between 'Rising Stars' and 'Experience' is the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in the centre of the Dutch capital, at a five minutes’ walk from Central Station.

The Experience team consists of: Evgeny Bareev (Russia, 2655), Viktor Kortchnoi (Switzerland, 2602), Artur Jussupow (Germany, 2587), Simen Agdestein (Norway, 2583) and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia, 2555).

The Rising Stars team consists of Wang Yue (China, 2704), Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria, 2687), Fabiano Caruana (Italy, 2630), Daniel Stellwagen (The Netherlands, 2616) and Erwin l’Ami (The Netherlands, 2610).

They play a 'Scheveningen' tournament, which means that each player of one team plays against each of the players of the other team. They do so twice, once with the white pieces and once with the black pieces. However, the Rising Stars may be most interested in the special prize for the player on their team with the highest score: an invitation to the prestigious 2009 Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Nice.

The rounds start at 13.30 hrs (except for the last round on August 30, which starts at noon; August 25 is a free day) and every day there is expert commentary for the public. Admission is free.

Chess Study

Do you have an FIDE rating?

Dr. Robert Howard of the University of New South Wales in Australia is carrying out a study of chess skill in internationally rated players. The study looks at effects of amount of practice, coaching and age of starting chess on chess skill and at chess players' views about chess skill. The study involves a short online survey. The survey is for anyone who has, or who ever has had, an FIDE rating.

The survey takes only about 5-10 minutes to complete. All responses are completely confidential. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Russian, and German.

To take part, you must know your exact FIDE ID number, which will be something like "14200887". ID numbers are posted on the FIDE website at http://www.fide.com

A summary and analysis of the study findings will be posted here when it is complete and will be emailed to any participant who requests it.

If you would like to participate, please go to this website: http://education.arts.unsw.edu.au/fidestudy/

For any queries, please contact Dr Robert Howard, University of New South Wales, on rwh@unsw.edu.au

FIDE Grand Prix Events

The line ups for the FIDE Grand Prix events have been announced. The top four players in the world, along with players such as Morozevich and Shirov are missing. It seems that in the case of Kramnik and Topalov that they believe that the event doesn't have big enough prize money (according to quotes in Chess Today). All this was more or less known beforehand. However the players who have signed up make this a very attractive and interesting series of events. The grand prix is organised by Global Chess which is headed by Bessel Kok.

ICC and FICS client for mobile phones

Mats Luthman has written a program that connects to ICC and FICS, compatable with many modern mobile phones. I've been looking for something like this for a while for watching live tournaments if I'm out and about. Its a nice free solution, you can also play but I haven't tried that.
