1) Introduction

My thanks to Mikhail Golubev, Alin Campeanu, Doru Ionescu, John Henderson, George Mirijanian, Luis Blasco de la Cruz, Miklos Orso, Doug Bake, Frank Berry, Axel Fritz, Lou Caruana, John Hillery, Pavel Matocha, Adolivio Capece, Bill Townsend, Colin Mackenzie, Sergey Abramov, Yin Hao, Greg Shahade, Chris Ross and everyone else who helped with the issue.

A good week of chess. The 60th Russian Championship Higher League offering the usual good standard. China moved on to England fresh from beating the Russians to duff up the English aswell, things are clearly moving in the right direction for them. Pavel Matocha followed up the Cez Chess Trophy with another nice event the Czech Coal tournament celebrating the illustrious history of the old Carlsbad tournaments (rather ungratefully I suggested it would be nice to return to 26 player all play all like they did in the good old days, now that's a proper tournament, these days a tournament of that length would only suggest ratings manipulation, how times have changed) where he has assembled a really nice field. Finally there has been a low key buildup at least in my case, but the World Championship title is to change hands again after the Mexico City tournament which starts on the 13th. The World Champion Vladimir Kramnik defends his title against Anand, Svidler Morozevich Leko, Gelfand, Aronian and Grischuk. I expect great things.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

14) 129th New York State Championship

The 129th New York State Championship was held in Colonie, a suburb of Albany, NY from Aug. 31 to Sept 3. About 185 players competed in the four sections.

The event was won by GMs Alexander Ivanov and Ildar Ibragimov with 5-1. There was a lot of strong opposition at this tourney, and it’s worthwhile to note that all the games these two grandmasters played were decisive. There was a six way tie for third place with 4½-1½ among: GM Hikaru Nakamura, GM Leonid Yudasin, GM Joel Benjamin, GM Sergey Kudrin, IM Jay Bonin and expert Ben Dean-Kawamura.

The NYSCA constitution states that the NY State champion must be a state resident, so while Ivanov and Ibragimov shared the top prize money, neither could be NY State Champion because they both were from out of state. There were four New Yorkers among the players with 4½ and since GM Nakamura had the best tiebreaks, he is officially the state champion, having previously won the title in 2004.

There were two important last round games on the top boards that decided the final places, Nakamura-Ibragimov and Bonin-Yudasin. On board one, GM Nakamura had 4½, leading the rest of the field by a half a point. Ordinarily this would be a recipe for an early draw offer, but Nakamura came roaring out of the gate with the double-edged Danish Gambit, obviously intending to roll Ibragimov off the board. However, Nakamura’s attack fizzled and Ibragimov was able to launch a killing counterattack. This game had a big crowd of spectators around it as the two grandmasters tried to mate each other as their time was running down. Such was the attraction of the game that after Nakamura resigned and the players were going over the game, GM Yudasin was making suggestions in spite of the fact that his own game was still going on, and he seemed to be in trouble. However, in spite of being a pawn down against IM Jay Bonin, Yudasin managed to draw.

Tied for ninth with 4-2 were: FM Michael Dougherty, FM James Critelli, FM Sunil Weeramantry, Lonnie Kwartler and Michael Thaler.

The New York State championship is the longest running annual tournament in the U.S., and possibly the world, having started in 1878 and been held almost every year since then. There are many famous players on the list of New York State Champions, such as world champion Jose Capablanca (1910) and 5th World Correspondence Champion Hans Berliner (1953).

The event was directed by Steve Immitt and Bill and Brenda Goichberg. Full crosstables for the event are posted at the Continental Chess website, the address is: http://www.chesstour.com/nysc07r.htm

Gibtelecom Chess Festival 2008

The 6th edition of Gibraltar's Gibtelecom Chess Festival will be held from 22nd-31st January 2008 at the Caleta Hotel, one of Gibraltar's best hotels. In previous years players of the quality of Alexei Shirov, Michael Adams and Nigel Short have played in the Masters section. Usually the Masters field includes at least 30 grandmasters. In 2008 the first prize in the Masters has gone up to £12,000 and the tournament is so strong at the top that it even offers a £2,000 prize for the best score by a player rated under 2600 (we think that might be unique worldwide) as well as the same amount for other rating categories down to sub-2200. There is also big money to be won in the Under 2250 (£1,500 first prize) and Under 1850 (£1,000 first prize) events. Even the relatively light-hearted evening events (which cost nothing to enter) have a combined prize fund of £1,200.
