Eventually Vladislav Tkachiev won the tie-break matches to take the
European Title from 7 other players tied on 8 points. The final days tie-breaks
were not covered live (and I still haven't found any games) and links to the
results were not particularly clear. It also seems to have been another in a
long line of events where the rules were changed at the last minute and the
number of qualifiers was slightly reduced. Lets hope this is the last time.

The 8th Individual European Chess Championships took place 2-16 April,
2007, in the International Congress Center, Dresden (Germany). 11 rounds Swiss
system, 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with
an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. Vladislav Tkachiev
won the tie-breaks beating Ivan Cheparinov (1.5-0.5) Dmitry Jakovenko (1.5-0.5)
and Emil Sutovsky 2-0 in the final. Sutovsky reached the final by beating
Konstantin Sakaev (1.5-0.5) and Dusko Pavasovic (1.5-0.5). Corrections from
last week: Beat Zueger - Yukasin (6) Tiviakov - Prusikin (6)
Initially there were 33 qualifiers announced but then this was reduced
to 29 as some players had qualified from 2006 including Mikhail Gurevich and
Arkadij Naiditsch. 34 non-prequalified players with 7,5 points for 29-7=22
places in the cup, the top 10 by median Buchholz went for free: Volokitin,
Gustafsson, Tomashevsky, Almasi, Malakhov, Galkin, Laznicka, Nisipeanu,
Nevednichy, Landa. The remaining 24 matched for 12 places. Link: Qualified:

Public Announcement For The Incorporation To The Grand Slam Chess
Circuit 2008
In the meeting held on 8th March 2007 by the representatives of the
GSCA (Grand Slam Chess Association) and the tournaments that currently form
part of It (Corus-Wijk Aan Zee, Ciudad de Linares, M-tel Sofía and
Bilbao) among other subjects it was agreed to open a period ending on 8th May
for receiving the applications in order to incorporate a maximum of three
tournaments to the Grand Slam Chess that will begin in 2008.
The candidate tournaments must comply with the following requirements:
Be at least within the category XIX.
Establish in the players’ contracts that if winning the tournament
the winner will have to take part in the Final Master of the Grand Slam which
will be held in Bilbao on the second fortnight of September 2008.
The contender tournaments must send a letter stating their desire to
participate in the Grand Slam to the e-mail address shown below, or might
personally present their candidacies to the GSCCA in Sofía on 8th May
(if that is the case). The letter must be accompanied by an explanatory report
with all the relevant details of the project which will include at least:
1) City, place, dates and characteristics of the playing hall.
2) Format of the Tournament (no. of players, game system, rules)
3) System to avoid the non fighting draws.
4) Approx. budget for the whole Tournament.
5) Awards and global retributions for the players.
6) Sponsors.
7) Organisers of the Tournament.
8) Media: In addition to the location and characteristics of the press
room, the report must specify the obligations planned to be requested from the
players in relation to the journalists and whether they will have invitations o
reduced prices for accommodation.
9) Main elements and sections on the Website of the Tournament.
10) Description and budget for other activities related to the main
Tournament.

Anand ICC Charity Simul

5th Solingen Chess Weeks
The 5th Solingen Chess Weeks will be held at Solingen (North
Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) between June, 1st and June, 10th 2007.
The main events of the chess festival are the two opens between June,
7th and 10th., both 7 rounds swiss, 2h/40+1h/all. The A-open is
an Elo tournament open for all players; the top prizes are 800/500/400 euros.
IM and GM are free of entry fee. The B-open is for players

Novi Sad Championship
Novi Sad will host the 2009 European National Team Championship. In the
run up to that the Championship of Novi Sad took place 18th-25th March 2007.

MTel Masters
The MTel Masters take place in Sofia 9th-20th May 2007. The field for
the ten round, double round robin event, is Veselin Topalov, Liviu Dieter
Nisipeanu, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Gata Kamsky, Michael Adams and Krishnan
Sasikiran. Tiebreak games will be played to decide the winner in the case of a
tie. The Sofia draw Rule will be strictly applied. The players will not be

8th Individual European Chess Championships (Men/Open + Women)
The 8th Individual European Chess Championships take place 2-16 April,
2007, in the International Congress Center, Dresden (Germany). 11 rounds Swiss
system will be played, 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of
the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. The
European Championships are open to all players representing the Chess
Federations which comprise the European Chess Union (FIDE zones 1.1 to 1.9)
regardless of their title or rating. There is no limit of participants per
federation; however applications have to be sent by the national federations
only, preferable by internet registration form. The Individual European
Championships 2007 and the Individual Women`s Championship 2007 are
qualification events for the next Chess World Cup or the next World Chess
Championships for Women respectively. According to FIDE’s tournament
regulations and the decision of the ECU Board, 33 players from the men’s
section and 13 players from the women’s section will qualify. The
organizer offers a prize fund of 200,000 Euros. In addition FIDE will
contribute to the prize fund with an amount of 80,000 US Dollars (60,000 for
the open section and 20,000 for the women’s section). FIDE/ECU will deduct
20 % from the total prize fund. The national federations were requested to fill
in and return the Application Form not later than 31th January 2007. The
organizer will accept late registrations after this date subject to an extra

Currently, over 580 registrations have been made by the national
federations at the end of the first application phase - 424 participants in the
Open and 162 in the women´s event.
43 of the 54 ECU federations have registered at least one starter. The

Russian Federation with 88.
The field of participants will be headed by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (ELO
2754) from Azerbaijan, number 5 of the world ranking and the European Champion
of 2004 Ivanchuk Vassily (ELO 2750) from the Ukraine. Eight ladies out of the
world's TOP 20 will be present in Dresden including Nadezhda Kosintseva (ELO
2496) from Russia and World Champion of 2004 Antoaneta Stefanova (ELO 2483)
from Bulgaria.

The 2007 Sydney International Open will be held as a 9-round FIDE-rated
Swiss event from 10th-14th April 2007. The venue is Parramatta Town Hall, an
historic centre and business hub just 30 minutes by train from Central Sydney

also possible to play in Australia's largest weekender, the Doeberl Cup, a
