1) Introduction

My thanks to Lou Caruana, Spiros Ilandzis, Gary Suffield, Miklos Orso, Chris Bird, Argiris Kotsis, Remco Hekhuis, Ruben Casafus, Lubomir Ftacnik, Mikhail Golubev, David Clayton, Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another busy summer week of chess. Boris Gelfand and David Navara drew their four game match, both won with black and then there were two draws. There are interesting all-play-all events in Montreal and London the latter being the strongest in many years. The British Championships continue.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

9) Acropolis Tournament

News: Spiros Ilandzis. The "Acropolis" tournament started in Athens (at the "President" hotel), on Sunday 13th August. Being held for the 21st time, the tournament is comprised by the Open Section and the Ladies’Section. 102 players (68 + 34) are competing, from 24 countries. The financial prizes are reaching the sum of 22.000 euros. The tournament will be concluded on Monday 21st August. Games will be played from 5 pm each day (last round will start at 3 pm).

In the Open Section (mainly the non-Greek players have been invited), there are 68 partcipants, rated > 2150, among them 16 GMs. The top 10 ratings are: 1) Rozentalis (LTU, GM 2605), 2) Gelashvili (GEO, GM 2575), 3) Svetushkin (MDA, GM 2569), 4) Mastrovasilis D. (GRE, GM 2567), 5) Al Modiahki (QAT, 2564), 6) Solak (SCG, 2564), 7) Romanishin (UKR, GM 2555), 8) Peralta (ARG, GM 2546), 9) Nikolaidis (GRE, GM 2538), 10) Mastrovasilis Ath. (GRE, GM 2521). Former Women’s World Champions Stefanova (BUL, 2520) and Zhu Chen (QAT, 2476) are also taking part.

In the Ladies’Section, it’s going to be a very strong tournament as well, with 34 participants, among them 12 WGMs. Top ratings are: 1) Danielian (ARM, 2423), 2) Vijayalakshmi (IND, 2417), 3) Foisor Cr.-Ad. (ROM, 2393), 4) Kononenko (UKR, 2392), 5) Melia (GEO, 2381), 6) Zawadzka (POL, 2378), 7) Pokorna (SVK, 2342), 8) Rogule L. (LAT, 2342), 9) Krivec (SLO, 2316), 10) Burtasova (RUS, 2311).

There were some surprising results in the 1st round: Top-rated Rozentalis was held to a draw by Markidis, who played very solidly and maybe had a small advantage when the opponents agreed to a draw. D. Mastrovasilis had also to be satisfied with a draw, since he was a pawn down against Logothetis. Noticeably all four Greek juniors did well: I. Papadopoulos beat IM Vouldis with black in a very interesting game. Ang. Sandalakis beat Syrian IM Hakki. I. Georgiadis drew to Serbian GM Solak and Al. Dounis drew a long game to Kharlampidi. Last, but not least, Simeonidis managed to hold GM Romanishin to a draw and Sigalas also made a draw, with the black pieces, to Indian IM Sriram Jha.

The results: Rozentalis - Markidis draw, Yagiz - Gelashvili 0-1, Svetushkin - Hadzimanolis 1-0, Logothetis - Mastrovasilis D. draw, Al Modiahki - Pandavos P. 1-0, Georgiadis I. - Solak draw etc.

In the Women’s Tournament, most of the favourites also prevailed, with a notable exception on board No 13, where 17 y.o. M. Ikonomnopoulou beat Greek Champion Ek. Fakhiridou, with the black pieces. Kar. Smokina and Al. Stiri held higher-rated Cr-Ad. Foisor and Sal. Melia respectively to draws. Danielian, Kononenko and Pokorna finished their games in a nice way, while Vijayalakshmi, Zawadzka and Rogule managed to overcome the resistance of young Greek players V. Papadopoulou, Stefanidi and Pambalou, after quite long fights.

The results: Makka I. - Danielian 0-1, Vijayalakshmi - Papadopoulou V. 1-0, Smokina - Foisor Cr.-Ad. draw, Kononenko - Yildiz B. 1-0, Stiri - Melia draw.

Games are continuing with the 2nd round, on Monday 14th of August, from 5 pm.

23) Kramnik - Deep Junior

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the German’s Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."

The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.

Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h

During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.

NK Hoteles Chess Tournament

The NH Chess Tournament takes place August 19th-29th at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. It's organized by the hotel chain NH Hotels in close cooperation with the Association Max Euwe from Monaco. It's a Scheveningen team tournament between a team of 'Experience' and a team of 'Rising Stars'. The 'old hands' are Andersson, Beliavsky, Jussupov, Ljubojevic and Nunn, while the 'Youngsters' are Carlsen, Karjakin, Stellwagen, Smeets and Wang Hao. Obviously the first question is which team will win, but there are several 'individual' prizes as well, the most interesting being the one for the youngster with the best score (provided it's a positive score): he'll be invited to next year's Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Monaco.

Another novelty is that apart from the usual live transmission of the games there will be streaming video coverage from the tournament hall so that the Internet audience can follow the entire action.

Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
