My thanks to George Mastrokoukos, Krzysztof Pytel, Rob Vlaardingerbroek, Istvan Brindza, Charles Milton Ling, Natalia Khamidova, Petr Pisk, Jakub Fuksik, Juan Martínez Sola, Tarjei J. A tremendous week of chess. The Dortmund chess tournament has started with Peter Leko and Peter Svidler leading after two rounds. Under scrutiny will be Vladimir Kramnik who will play Veselin Topalov for the reunified world title in September although his manager has said that he won't be revealing any of his preparation. The Biel chess tournament is coming to a boil. After seven rounds Alexander Morozevich has lost two games to Magnus Carlsen but won the rest of his games to lead. Morozevich, Carlsen and Teimour Radjabov will clearly fight it out for the tournament in the remaining three rounds. The summer of chess continues with a total of 4452 games in the games section.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Czech Open took place 21st-29th July 2006. Stanislav Novikov won the main A tournament with 7.5/9. Sadly the event received world wide coverage for a different reason. English player 19 year old Jessie Gilbert had scored 3/5 in the B1 group when she died in a fall from the 8th floor apartment where she was staying. The story was picked up everywhere with sleepwalking and suicide being the two explanations. There were subsequent allegations about her family life which made front page news in England and later throughout the world. All very sad and such a terrible waste of a talented young life.
Interview with Stanislav Novikov
Petr Pisk sends this interview with the winner.
Stanislav Novikov, the winner of grandmaster tournament PARDUBICE OPEN, is not typical chess player. This 21-years-old man doesnt have regular training; sometimes he just plays with his friends. He enjoys his life same as young people around him. Chess are fun to him, thats all. It was the biggest success for him to win PARDUBICE OPEN. He didnt win such tournament before. He played without fear, he didnt prepared for his opponents, but tried to play as best as possible in each movement. Maybe he won the tournament because of this free and easy attitude.
What were your expectations before the tournament?
I wanted to finish 10th. I didnt think I could win. It is amazing. I feel really good right now.
How would you evaluate your last game against David Navara? You have beaten the number one of the tournament...
I didnt think about this game before we started. I didnt think I could win. But my beginning was pretty good and I put Navara under pressure. He made couple of mistakes and I took advantage of that. I am satisfied with my performance.
Which game was the hardest one?
I think the game against Stocek was really hard. My position wasnt very good, so I was glad it was a draw. Concerning the last game against Navara, it was hard to prepare mentally.
How important is this victory for you?
This was the tournament of my life. I have never won such a tournament. Concerning my previous victories, I was 2nd at the Aeroflot festival in Moscow in B category, thats it.
How did you like CZECH OPEN festival?
This is the first time I was here. I didnt have high expectations, but everything here was great. I really liked it very much. I was able to concentrate on my own performance all the time; there was nothing to disturb me. From the beginning till the end I didnt have bigger problem. I will definitely come next year. What are my chances to win this tournament again? Fifty fifty.
Are you going to celebrate your victory?
I will celebrate with my friends. But concerning alcohol I am cautious. I dont drink too much. I watch my regime, it is important for me.
Is it hard to be a professional player in Russia?
There is a very competitive culture in Russia. It is hard to make chess your living. I will leave immediately to other tournament, after that I will play at Cheljabinsk open. It is not always easy to travel a lot, but I have to play as much tournaments as possible to make money from playing chess. It is hard job, but I like it. I play chess as a professional for two years, but still chess is fun and I like it.
Do you play also some league chess?
I play in the Russian league. My team is Lada Togliatty. We finished 10th of 12. We definitely need to improve on this result next year.
How often do you practice chess?
I play irregularly. I dont have nor training plan nor coach. Sometimes I meet my friends who are also grandmasters and we play together. I am not all the time in chess. I live common way of life. I like sport, cinema or dating girls.

The Caissa IM July tournament took place 16th-21st July 2006 in Kecskemet, Hungary. Mr. Dean won the event and made IM norm. More info: http://www.caissachessbooks.com. Dr. Tamas Erdelyi postmaster@caissa.t-online.hu Next event in the summer will be on 20th-28th August 2006.
Rudolf Teschner 16th February 1922 - 23rd July 2006 has died at the age of 84. Teschner won the German championship in 1951, achieved a draw against Fischer at the Stockholm Interzonal in 1962, and shared 4th place in the very strong Bamberg tournament in 1968 (1st Keres, 2nd-3rd Petrosian, Schmid, 4th - 5th Unzicker, Teschner). He was an IM throughout his career but was also awarded an honorary GM title in 2000 which simply reflected the fact that anyone who earned an IM title when he did had performances clearly in excess of GM strength these days. However, his fame probably lies in the many very successful books on chess he wrote, and in editing the "Deutsche Schachzeitung",which for many years was the most important magazine of its kind in Germany. The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.
Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
