1) Introduction

My thanks Roberto Alvarez, Oscar de la Riva, Yin Hao, John Hillery, Thomas Henrich, Spiros Ilandzis, Gary Suffield, Frits Agterdenbos, Michael Atkins, Calle Erlandsson, Kim Lye, Herman van Riemsdijk, Ben Finegold, David Cohen, Chris Bird, Holger Lieske, Andreas Steger, Adolivo Capece, Jonathan Berry, Istvan Almasi and everyone else who helped with the issue.

A huge week of chess with nearly 30 seperate events covered. The most important was the Tomsk Rapid won by Sergey Karjakin by a point from Sergey Rublevsky. I hope that the games from the first half of the event which are missing at the moment will be made available. Sad news from the US with the death of Aleksander Wojtkiewicz. A talented junior whose career was interupted by jailing by for political activity he was one of the most active players on the circuit. In spite of alcohol problems he was well liked by those who knew him judging from the letters I've had.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Tomsk Rapid

The 10th Petr Izmailov Memorial rapid tournament took place in Tomsk, Russia 11th-16th July 2006. Sergey Karjakin won the event with a round to spare. In addition there is a B event aswell. The games were all broadcast live in a viewer on the internet but then removed from the website, I had to type in most of the rounds in order to get the games. I hope the early rounds along with the B tournament games will become available in PGN. It would be a terrible pity if they are lost.

5) Aleksander Wojtkiewicz 1963-2006

Aleksander Wojtkiewicz was born 15th January 1963 in Riga, Latvia died around 6pm Friday 14th July 2006 in the USA where he had been living in Baltimore, Maryland for many years.

There is shock news from the US (http://beta.uschess.org/frontend/news_7_66.php) that one of the world most active GMs Aleksander Wojtkiewicz has died of cancer and liver problems at the age of 43. Born in Latvia in 1963 his early games he appeared under the name Vojtkevic. According to an article in the Urbanite Baltamore Magazine (http://www.urbanitebaltimore.com/juneMagazine/encounter.htm) "He became a chess master at 15, but his rise to grandmaster was delayed by period of time spent in a Russian gulag. In the late ’80s, as a member of a human rights organization in Latvia, he refused to join the Soviet Army." He moved to Poland around 1988 (he doesn't seem to have played between 1982 and 1988 probably coinciding with his political problems with the Soviet authorities) and later spent increasing amounts of time in the US possibly after running foul of the Polish Chess Federation (http://www.chessclub.org/FischerRandom.html) and in 2002 he switched nationalities in the rating list. A GM since 1991 he was most recently rated 2562 in July. In spite of obvious ill health he had just tied for first in the World Open.

6) Marseille Chess Festival

The Festival International d'Echecs de Marseille took place 30th June - 7th July 2006. There was an IM tournament which saw Stanislav Savchenko and Nicolas Brunner finish on 7/9 and a WGM tournament with a three way tie also on 7/9. Daniel Fridman and Eric Prie finished with 7.5/9 in the open A. I've made some sense of the games on the site.

Two foreigners are allowed to every team.

In the end, the team ''Kydon'' Hania (champions 2000-2004) took the title again, ahead of 2005 winners of S.O. Kavalas. ''Kydon'' managed to beat S.O. 15th Kavala Open

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.

Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684
