My thanks to Nebojsa Baralic, Jan Mazuch, George Mirijanian, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Valery Maes, Frank Berry, Eugeny Atarov, Thomas Heine Bech, Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Miklos Orso, Mikhail Golubev, Gaguik Oganessian, Laszlo Nagy, Michiel Abeln, Sinisa Joksic, the many great organisers and officials 0at the Corus tournament and everyone else who helped with the issue.
I'd love to talk at length about how wonderful the Wijk aan Zee tournament was this year but a fairly brutal schedule means I'm running out of time. Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov both finished on +6 -1 =6 a point and a half clear of the field. They both said that their rivalry at the top of the the rating list and also in reality as the best players in the world had pushed them to their great achievements. Anand in particular said that he'd prepared really hard for the event in an attempt to catch Topalov who was clearly last year's best player. They battled throughout and in the final round Anand caught him by winning his game against Gelfand whilst Topalov couldn't win with black against Leko. They were not the only players with reason to be happy. Michael Adams has had a fairly miserable time since the last Corus event but he started the year well sharing third with Vassily Ivanchuk. Ivanchuk showed his absolute class, especially in preparation which might have even taken him to the battle for the lead. An early to Anand through him slightly out of his stride but he had sufficient advantages to have done much better. Boris Gelfand got a deserved invite to the event and he finished in a share for 5th with 16 year old Sergey Karjakin. Next year another 16 year old will play when Magnus Carlsen takes his place in the group, a decision announced at the closing ceremony. The domination of the older players means their time is not quite now but it may be fairly soon if they continue. Exciting times.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee took place January 13th-29th 2006. Veselin Topalov was held by Peter Leko and was caught by Viswanthan Anand after he defeated Boris Gelfand. In the B Group Alexander Motylev qualified for the A-Group next year by right after a superior tie-break from Magnus Carlsen. However at the closing ceremony it was announced that Carlsen too will be invited. I'm giving the games again because I found a small number of deviations in the official bulletin from the games I originally put in TWIC where presumably I jumped the gun (round 3 especially). I'd rather have them correct in one place.
