My thanks to Giorgio Gozzi, Sead Bicevic, Eugeny Atarov, Jan van Run, Geoffrey Borg, Michal Krasenkow, Thomas Henrich, Adolivio Capece, Jakub Fuksik and everyone else who helped with the issue and indeed throughout 2005.
There were many years when the Soviet Championships were the undoubted highlight of the year. The new format of qualification and super final for the Russian Championship has returned this event to near the top of the pile. Sergei Rublevsky took first a point clear of the field with a fine performance in a tough event. In second place were Dmitry Jakovenko and Alexander Morozevich. Morozevich played like a man possessed after sleeping in and losing by default against Jakovenko in round three but it almost certainly cost him 2nd place alone and perhaps a shot at first.
The new FIDE rating list sees Topalov poised to be number one when Kasparov's rating expires after his retirement. In between however is Wijk aan Zee and the Linares/Morelia events. Competing in both is the new World Number 5, 23 year old Levon Aronian. He's one of a number of young players who have made a move in this list. Double World Junior Champion 20 year old Shakhriyaz Mamedyarov is one, and perhaps most ominously of all is Magnus Carlsen. Now 15 he is of the age where his real ascent should start but having already achieved great results and a GM title his starting point is higher, but its his potential as a chess player that marks him out as being different from other prodigies of recent times. I'm not usually one to talk up junior talent, preferring to see how things turn out but I think I'm not alone in thinking that where he finishes 2006 could be the real story of the year.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Russian Championship Superfinal took place in Moscow 18th-30th December 2005. Sergey Rublevsky took the title a point clear of Dmitry Jakovenko and Alexander Morozevich (who loss by default to Jakovenko when he over slept was very expensive).

Garry Kasparov remains World Number One for the last time before being inactive for a year following his retirement. FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov becomes the third player in history over 2800 after Kasparov and Kramnik. His rating is 2801 and he takes over from Viswanathan Anand as World Number 2 gaining 19 points. (Topalov's gain came solely from his victory in San Luis as did the moves for his rivals Anand, Morozevich, Leko, Kasimdzhanov, Adams and Polgar. Peter Svidler went on to play the World Team Championship and perform excellently there too) Anand is only 9 points behind after gaining 4 points. Peter Svidler gained 25 points and moves up to number 4. In 5th place is 23 year old Levon Aronian. having gained 28 points. Vladimir Kramnik gains 2 points and a place to move up to 6th due to falls of 11 and 19 points for Leko and Ivanchuk. Gelfand and Ponomariov return to the top 10 the latter after gaining 19 rating points. Morozevich is 11 after gaining 14 points. Bacrot and Polgar fall out of the top 10, the latter losing 24 points. 20 year old Shakhriyaz Mamedyarov gets over 2700 for the first time at World Number 15 gaining 35 points. Vladimir Malakhov gained 24 points. Another 20 year old on the move is Zahar Efimenko gaining 29 rating points. 25 year old Zhang Pengxiang is the top new entry into the top 100 but 15 year old Magnus Carlsen's whopping 55 point rating increase takes the child prodigy into the top 100 for the first time in what many predict may be a trip all the way to the top. Seven players come into the list and seven fall out including legend Viktor Korchnoi. Another two points were required to make the list with 2618 tieing for 99th-101st place. 2616 was sufficient in October. There has been one Federation change, Mikhail Gurevich is now Turkish not Belgian.

The tournament is usually Canada's largest open event, although this year its 195 players ranked it just behind the Canadian Open for attendance. Hopefully I can round up all the games at some point.
