1) Introduction

My thanks to Mihajlo Savic, Yannick Pelletier, Harald Grafenhofer, Ben Finegold, Anatoly Lisenko, Thomas Henrich, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Dan Heisman, Ching Kim Lye, Frank Berry, Adolivio Capece, Bognar Csaba, Frans M. Hoynck van Papendrecht, Jan Mazuch, Ronan Duke, Miklos Orso, Tryfon Gavriel, Jakub Fuksik, Poul Søndergaard, Alexander Martynkov, Antonio Torrecillas and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Luke McShane came from behind to win the category XVI Ciutat d'Igualada tournament. He did this by virtue of winning his last two games after drawing the first four. At the same time Victor Korchnoi was going the other way as he lost his last three including the last one to McShane. Lots of good chess elsewhere in the world in a pretty solid week of news.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) American Continental Championship

The American Continental Championship took place in Buenos Aires 5th-16th August, 2005. Lazaro Bruzon took clear first place with 8.5/11 leaving 7 players to fight out 6 places for the next stages of the FIDE World Championship. The person to miss out was young Gaston Needleman who scored a result of a lifetime in getting a GM norm in regular time. In the playoff he found himself to be the whipping boy as the other players started agreeing short draws against each other and simply playing for a win against him. This was discussed in a highly critical manner in a ChessBase story but the facts seem to suggest players were simply maximising their chances from the half way point. However some kind of modified knockout format would have cut this problem out which was still pretty unedifying if entirely understandable. More discussion at: Chessninja

19) World Open

The World Open took place June 30th - July 4th 2005 in Philadelphia. GM Kamil Miton beat Magesh Panchanathan in a blitz playoff to take the title after both finished on 7.5/9. The website advises not archiving the games until they've finished the game file but it seems wise to include them now before I forget about the event altogether as it seems unlikely the games will be improved.

26) ACP Tour 2005-2006 - Report August 2005

The ACP Tour 2005-2006 started some weeks ago. Several tournaments have been played and the time has come to take a look at the first results.

Thanks to his sole victory at the Sparkassen Chess-Meeting in Dortmund and the 700 points he earned there, Arkadij Naiditsch is comfortably leading. Another strong closed event of the Summer, the GMT in Biel, was won by Boris Gelfand and Andrei Volokitin who got 320 points for their effort. By finishing second behind Luke McShane at the recent Magistral Ciutat d'Igualada, Andrei Volokitin jumped to place two of the standings.

India's current Junior World Champion Pentala Harikrishna is also amongst the early leaders thanks to his deserved win at the 2nd Sanjin Hotel Cup in Tiayuan. Here are the standings http://www.chess-players.org/eng/tour/rulss_2005/standings.html

A few very strong opens took place as well. Pavel Eljanov won in Amsterdam, while Andrei Kovalev and Mikhail Kobalja were victorious in Pardubice and Biel respectively. One should not forget the very first competition of the ACP calendar, the Championnat de Paris, which was dominated by Alberto David and Arthur Kogan.

A special mention should be made for the Mainz Ordix open. This rapid tournament, which is undoubtedly one of the strongest in the world, was won by Teimour Radjabov.
