1) Introduction

My thanks to Thomas Henrich, Jan van de Mortel, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Alexey Mazurok, Haroon Rashid, Ching Kim Lye, Yannick Pelletier, Miklos Orso, Vladica Andrejic, Alex Brunetti, Arthur Brameld, Eldar Mukhametov, Sotiris Logothetis, Rolf Behovits, Rich Freeman, Gérard Demuydt, John Robinson, Michael Rahal, Mark Hogarth, Nick Barnett, Sinisa Joksic and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another week with plenty of chess. The Sigeman tournament has started in Copenhagen before moving to Malmoe in its later stages. After four rounds Krishnan Sasikiran, Hikaru Nakamura, Jan Timman and Viorel Iordachescu lead. Sergei Tiviakov leads in Gausdal with 5.5/6, Magnus Carlsen had a dreadful 1/2 from 4 start to the event but has won his last two games. 15 year old Wang Hao won the Dubai Open, it will be interesting to see if the untitled player has just made his breakthrough.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament

The Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament is co-arranged by the Malmo-based Limhamn Chess Club and the Copenhagen Chess Federation. The first five rounds will be played at the classical Hipp Theater in the center of Malmo, and the tournament will be concluded with four rounds in Copenhagen (at Quality Hotel in Hoje Taastrup). The event takes place April 15th-24th 2005.

11) Lenk Open

Sinisa Joksic reports: Vladimir Tukmakov won the 17th Lenk Open beating Joseph Gallagher in semi-final and Andrei Sokolov in final. This is the third time Tukmakov has won in Lenk (1992, 2001, 2005). The event took place in Hotel Kruez, March 24th-28th 2005. 131 players a new record. After the 5th round Zoltan Varga (1), Joseph Gallagher (2), Andrei Sokolov (3) and Vladimir Tukmakov (4) qualified for final pool (the knock-out event). The Semi-finals were decided in rapid, after two short draws in classic chess.

Varga missed a one move win against Sokolov. (White: Sokolov Kd2, Rc3, P: a3, c2, f2, g5, h4 (7); Black: Varga Kb5, Be4, P: a4, c4, c7, f4, g6, h7 (8); Black played very fast, although he had more than 15 minutes left 1. ...Kc5 and after 2. Rh3 Varga resign. Black should play 1?Bg2!! winning.

In second semi-final Tukmakov beat Gallagher. The Final event started with four short draws (!), two in "classic" and two rapid chess. So, everything was decided in the 5 minutes blitz games. Sokolov blundered piece to Tukmakov and Gallagher lost to Varga.

18) French Team championship TOP 16

The French Team championship "TOP 16" consisited of two groups. There will be a final played amongst the winners later in the year. 2 groups GpA in Noyon (North of France) and GpB Cannes (South of France) played rounds 4-7 31st March - 3rd April 2005. Players included: Grischuk, Adams, Bacrot and Svidler. My thanks to Gérard Demuydt.

Sotiris Logothetis points out a weird error in the game file last week. Two games were credited to Hinks-Edwards (black against Huebner and Delchev) that were NOT played by him, but by German GM Jan Gustafsson. I've put them in the game file this week.

19) ACP Tour Report - March 2005

Four tournaments were taken into account during the last ACP Tour period but no major changes occured in the standings. Thanks to the Amber Rapid Tournament most leaders managed to slightly improve their position. But although Vishy Anand won the event, this will not help him much. Indeed, the 165 points he received in Monaco represent his sixth best result in the ACP Tour 2004-2005! It goes without saying that many players would be proud to have this as best score! But it is stipulated in the Rules that only the best five performances will be counted in the final standings.

   Top-10 list on April 15th:

 1. Anand 1598
 2. Leko 1196
 3. Gelfand 916
 4. Kramnik 839
 5. Morozevich 709
 6. Bacrot 612
 7. Amonatov 600
 8. Grischuk 567
 9. Bologan 545
10. Short 510

Last month's most successful player was certainly Vugar Gashimov, who convincingly won the Acropolis Open in Athens. The 400 points he earned make him appear on place 12 of the standings. Boris Avrukh, now 11th, also improved his chances by winning 65 points in Athens. The strong opens in Foxwoods and Deizisau (Neckar-Open) had little impact on the standings, as their winners are not ACP members. Nevertheless, we would like to congratulate Hikaru Nakamura, as well as Mikhail Gurevich, Christoph Renner and Robert Kempinski for their victory. The coming month will see three events of the ACP Tour take place. The closed tournament in Dos Hermanas, the open in Dubai as well as the rapid Grand Prix of Bordeaux.

The Category 20 event will be a double round robin with a 7 hour time control. There will be a winner of the event as there will be a playoff in the case of a tie.

One unusual rule is that draw by mutual agreement between the players is forbidden. The players won't be allowed to offer a draw or speak to their opponent. The player can claim the draw only via Arbiter in 3 cases: A) Perpetual check B) Triple repetition C) A theoretically drawn position. Only the Arbiter can confirm the result of the game. The Arbiters will be advised by Zurab Azmaiparashvili on this. Arbiters: Chief Arbiter: Joaquin Espejo (Spain),Deputy arbiters: Boris Postovski (USA),Panaqiotis Nikolopoulos (Greece).

The venue is the five-star luxury Grand Hotel Sofia (http://www.grandhotelsofia.bg) and there will be an opening ceremony there. During the rest day Grand Master Veselin Topalov will give a simul to chess fans at the garden in front of the National Theatre.
