1) Introduction

My thanks to Martin Kaster, Peter Sowray, Miklos Orso, Sean Hewitt, Jörg-Dieter Meyer, Pascal Villalba, Sinisa Drazic, Andy McFarland, Jiri Hornicek, Steve Laios, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Victor Hugo Silva, Gary Bekker, Fabian Konrad, Nigel Freeman and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Boris Gelfand is one of the most consistant performers in world chess being around 2700 for years. He took first place in the Bermuda International jointly with Pentala Harikrishna who caught him with a win in the final round. Harikrishna seems to have been round for years but is still only 18 years old and his rating is on the rise. The Bermuda event continues with an open, it isn't the only one, the traditional Cappelle la Grande Open event is already underway and the extremely strong Aeroflot Open in Moscow starts tomorrow.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

5) Czech Championship

The Czech Championship took place 1st-11th February 2005. David Navara and Jiri Stocek finished on 8/11. David Navara took the title on tie-break. A misreading of the site below led me to place it in Prague not Karlovy Vary which is actually a very famous chess town, best known in its German form, Karlsbad.

14) Gibtele.com Masters International

The Gibtele.com Masters International took place 25th January - 3rd February 2005. There was a five way tie for first place. The players are given in alphabetical order in the final standings. Levon Aronian, Zahar Efimenko, Kiril Georgiev, Alexei Shirov and Emil Sutovsky all scored 7.5/10. After a slow start Shirov managed to gain an ELO point at the end. There are a number of game corrections. My thanks to Sean Hewitt.

15) 18th World Correspondence Championship

Pedro F. Hegoburu writes:The International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) is glad to announce that Correspondence Chess Grandmaster Joop J. van Oosterom (Netherlands) has become the 18th World Champion! With two draws in his final games, Grandmaster Joop J. van Oosterom (Netherlands) has ended his participation in World Championship Final 18 with a score of 11 points in 14 games (8 wins, 6 draws, undefeated) and his score cannot be equalled or surpassed, therefore becoming the 18th World Champion. GM van Oosterom is currently the top player in ICCF's ELO ranking, with 2754 points. He was granted the Grandmaster title in 1993. Based on his most recent results, his expected ELO for the next period (valid as from April 1, 2005) is 2773, which would put him on the historical top place, above GM Hans Berliner (USA) with 2765 points.

Prior to his success in World Championship Final 18, GM van Oosterom had already participated in many top correspondence chess events. He is also a major chess sponsor with the annual Amber tournament. Below the table includes all finished games. I have used the ICCF ratings for April 2003.

16) Oceania Zonal

The Oceania 2005 FIDE Zonal qualifier took place January 30th - February 4th 2005 in Auckland, New Zealand. Gary Lane won the event with 7/9. Titles: WIM Narelle Szuveges WFM Angela Song (5 pts - 26.5 tie break) Shannon Oliver (5 pts - 25.0 tie break with V.Reid & E.Charomova - wins by 2nd tie break elimination of early results) IM Paul Garbett (6.5 pts - tie break ahead of G.Xie and J.Humphrey) FM Jonathan Humphrey (6.5 pts) Igor Bjelobrk (5.5 pts - tie break ahead of Aaron Guthrie, Puchen Wang & Michael Steadman). News: Michael Freeman.

Note that I made a correction to TWIC shortly after putting it up. Leonard Mc Laren played in the event (the unusual spacing of his name in the ELO rating list fooled me somewhat) and that name and his rating was corrected in the games files and crosstable in a version you may have already downloaded.
