1) Introduction

My thanks to Tryfon Gavriel, Mirjana Medic, Julio lapertosa, Miklós Orsó, Arthur Brameld, Øystein Brekke, Jason Luchan, Peter Karrer, David Llada, Rolf Behovits, Beat Zueger and everyone else who helped with the issue.

This issue is again compiled on the road and is fairly basic. The magazine is a day early because I'm in Brissago still for the conclusion of the Kramnik - Leko Classical World Championship. Coverage of that event is on the TWIC front page. Tomorrow sees the final game which I wish to concentrate as it would be a pity to be working on the TWIC magazine with potential history in the making in the same building.

The whole organisation has been absolutely tremendous and the match has reached an exceptional climax. The Olympiad in Calvia is also underway. What both events have in common is excellent internet coverage something that cannot always be said for these kind of events in the past.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Classical World Chess Championship Kramnik - Leko

The Classical World Chess Championship takes place at the Centro Dannemann in Brissago, Switzerland September 25th - October 18th, 2004. A total of 14 games will be played under classical time controls. Vladimir Kramnik is defending the title he won from Garry Kasparov in 2000 against Hungarian GM Peter Leko, who qualified at the Dortmund Candidates in 2002.

The 4th week of the match saw three draws. Kramnik came up with a novelty which immediately allowed a repetition in game 11 of the match in only 17 moves. Kramnik put pressure on against Leko's Caro Kann in game 12 and then really took the initiative by playing riskily using the Benoni in game 13 and producing a fantastically exciting game. The three draws however still leave Leko needing just a draw in the final round on Monday to take the title.

4) Essent tournament in Hoogeveen

The Essent tournament in Hoogeveen takes place 17th-23rd October 2004. The includes an open tournament and a double Round Robin.

Judit Polgar is missing having played every year since 1997 after the birth of a son in August. The event takes place at the same time as the Olympiad so for the first time the World Junior Champion is also missing. This year the two juniors are Magnus Carlsen (13) and Daniel Stellwagen (17) facing the experienced Ivan Sokolov and Nigel Short (the latter two will go on to play the final rounds of the Olympiad after the event concludes). Daniel Stellwagen made his final GM-norm in August in Vlissingen (Holland), after previous norms in Corus 2004 (Wijk aan Zee) and the Dutch Championship 2004.

45th US Armed Forces Open

The 2004 (45th annual) US Armed Forces Open (USAFO) Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday October 9 to Monday (Columbus Day) October 11, 2004 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

This year the event has been opened up to any chess players from around the world who are in a military status (active, reserve, retired, national guard, militia, cadet, midshipman, or their national equivalent). The event is also on the World Chess Federation calendar. The organisers would love to see one or more players from the UK show up this year.

Military chess players from all nations of the world are cordially invited. The US Department of State told the organisers that there are no restrictions on whom they may invite. To speed up the visa application process [for those nations who do not have a "reciprocal no visa agreement" with the US], the event is on a special list of approved events at all U. S. consulates and embassies around the world.

The superb venue this year is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So far, players from India, Macedonia, Israel, Malaysia and Greece have indicated their intent to participate. There is the hope many other nations will also attend. So far the strongest military player that may compete is GM Efstratios Grivas (ELO 2520) from Greece, who is an instructor at the Hellenic Army Academy in Attica, Greece near Athens.

The entrance fee is free. Registration is via e-mail using the form provided on the website.

Miroslav Radojcic Book

Miroslav ("Miro") Radojcic who died in 2000 was one of Yugoslavia's most renowned political journalists for their paper Politika. During the 1960s he worked out of the UN in New York as Politika's foreign correspondent to the US, and later in the 1970s he was assigned the same post for London. But he was also a popular figure in the chess arena, both as a player (he was a Yugoslav National Master) and writer on chess, including a long- running column in the American magazine Chess Review titled,

Bruce Monson bamonson@pcisys.net is writing a book with Yugoslav author Dimitry Bjelica on a book commemorating Radojcic's life and hopes that people who knew Miro will read about this effort on TWIC and contact him with information they may have about him, particularly unusual or funny stories, witty quotes, or other interesting anecdotes.

All those who have something to offer will receive mention in the credits, and those who have substantive material to offer (e.g., extended or multiple narrative accounts, scans of photos and other Radojcic-related memorabilia, etc.) will receive a free copy of the book.

Hastings Chess Congress

The Hastings Chess Congress takes place 28th December 2004 to 9 January 2005 and has a new format. The Hastings Premier and Challengers are combined into one knockout tournament. Let us imagine 120 players enter for the event which finishes 6th January. Then 60 players go forward from the first round, with 4 lucky losers. These 64 players play a second round of knockout. The 56 losers play in the Challengers Swiss. The 64 players continue in one game knockouts until there are 8 players left. These 8 play in the Premier of 2 game knockouts. All players knocked out will be contracted to play in the Swiss Challengers, except for the losing finalists.

Players when knocked out will carry forward their score in the standard play games. Of course White would have been a big advantage. Thus White will have 65 minutes and Black 95 in which to make all their moves, with the addition of one minute per move cumulatively from the first. Where games are drawn, ties will be resolved first by blitz games, failing that an Armageddon play-off. Players will be able to gain title results from either event. The event will be part of the Association of Chess Professionals GP.

The weekend tournament takes place 7-9 January.
