1) Introduction

My thanks to Thomas Henrich, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, David Llada, Miklós Orsó, Jason Luchan, Manmohan Das, Rolf Behovits and everyone else who helped with the issue.

This is an issue compiled on the road in Brissago so it may be a bit more rough and ready than normal. With just four games to go Peter Leko leads Vladimir Kramnik in the Classical World Championship match. Kramnik has failed to break through with the white pieces after two big novelties, one even cost him the game. Garry Kasparov also played this week in the European Club Cup. His 50% score was poor and may lead to him dropping below 2800 in the next rating list although he has a chance to redeem himself at the Olympiad if he plays there.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Classical World Chess Championship Kramnik - Leko

The Classical World Chess Championship takes place at the Centro Dannemann in Brissago, Switzerland September 25th - October 18th, 2004. A total of 14 games will be played under classical time controls. Vladimir Kramnik is defending the title he won from Garry Kasparov in 2000 against Hungarian GM Peter Leko, who qualified at the Dortmund Candidates in 2002.

The 3rd week of the match started with a 21 move draw in the Slav in game 7 where an under pressure Kramnik found some accurate moves to take the game to equality. Game 8 could turn out to be the decisive blow in the match. Kramnik blasted out many moves of preparation on the white side of the Ruy Lopez Marshall defence whilst Leko fell a long way behind on the clock. Kramnik went past the point of no return with 22. axb5 (22 Nxe4 would probably end in a draw) before starting to think but with 25. Qd3 it was clear that white was getting checkmated if he tried to queen his a-pawn and thus was totally busted. Game 9 saw Leko throw the advantage of the first move away and allow black at least equality by move 16. At this point Kramnik who afterwards said he was under the weather with a cold offered a draw which was accepted by Leko. Leko survived in game 10 after a Kramnik novelty put him under extreme pressure. Just four games to go.

3) European Club Cup

The European Club Cup took place in Izmir (Cesme), Turkey 2nd-9th October 2004. Garry Kasparov, Michael Adams, Alexei Shirov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Etienne Bacrot, Boris Gelfand, Alexander Grischuk and Nigel Short were amongst the players. Sadly Alexander Morozevich although named to play in the event did not compete. The event was the 20th European Club Cup for Men and 9th European Club Cup for Women. Top seeds were NAO Chess Club (Adams, Grischuk, Bacrot etc) and with 5 wins and two draws took clear first place. The next three teams were all tied with 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss with Bosna Sarajevo (Shirov, Short, Ivan Sokolov etc) taking second on board points ahead of Ladya Kazan (Top board Rublevsky) and Max Ven Ekaterinburg (Top board Kasparov). Favourites NTN Tbilisi (Dzagnidze, Lomineishvili, Javakhishvili, Matnadze and Gvetadze won the women's event. Jason Luchan sent a correction to Hisler-Hasangatin (1). Errors from round 4: Grischuk-Smirnov is clearly not right as is Bocharov-Radjabov from move 39.

Hastings Chess Congress

The Hastings Chess Congress takes place 28th December 2004 to 9 January 2005 and has a new format. The Hastings Premier and Challengers are combined into one knockout tournament. Let us imagine 120 players enter for the event which finishes 6th January. Then 60 players go forward from the first round, with 4 lucky losers. These 64 players play a second round of knockout. The 56 losers play in the Challengers Swiss. The 64 players continue in one game knockouts until there are 8 players left. These 8 play in the Premier of 2 game knockouts. All players knocked out will be contracted to play in the Swiss Challengers, except for the losing finalists.

Players when knocked out will carry forward their score in the standard play games. Of course White would have been a big advantage. Thus White will have 65 minutes and Black 95 in which to make all their moves, with the addition of one minute per move cumulatively from the first. Where games are drawn, ties will be resolved first by blitz games, failing that an Armageddon play-off. Players will be able to gain title results from either event. The event will be part of the Association of Chess Professionals GP.

The weekend tournament takes place 7-9 January.

45th US Armed Forces Open

The 2004 (45th annual) US Armed Forces Open (USAFO) Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday October 9 to Monday (Columbus Day) October 11, 2004 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

This year the event has been opened up to any chess players from around the world who are in a military status (active, reserve, retired, national guard, militia, cadet, midshipman, or their national equivalent). The event is also on the World Chess Federation calendar. The organisers would love to see one or more players from the UK show up this year.

Military chess players from all nations of the world are cordially invited. The US Department of State told the organisers that there are no restrictions on whom they may invite. To speed up the visa application process [for those nations who do not have a "reciprocal no visa agreement" with the US], the event is on a special list of approved events at all U. S. consulates and embassies around the world.

The superb venue this year is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So far, players from India, Macedonia, Israel, Malaysia and Greece have indicated their intent to participate. There is the hope many other nations will also attend. So far the strongest military player that may compete is GM Efstratios Grivas (ELO 2520) from Greece, who is an instructor at the Hellenic Army Academy in Attica, Greece near Athens.

The entrance fee is free. Registration is via e-mail using the form provided on the website.
