1) Introduction

My thanks to Antonio Castello, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Thomas Henrich, Antonio Rosino, Bartlomiej Macieja, Adolivio Capece, Diego Redondo, Gagik Khanamiryan, Arthur Brameld, John Robinson, James Coleman, Radu-Catalin Chirila, Leonid Galperin, Igor Glek, Bill Townsend, Raimondas Paliulionis, Roberto Alvarez, Soumen Majumder and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The main news of the week is the Classical World Chess Championship match between Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko. Kramnik only needs a draw to retain his title in the 14 game match and he made a great start by winning game one. Game two was drawn. Hopefully the match will prove to be a tough and entertaining one as these matches can provide some of the best that chess can offer. I will be at the match for a week starting next Monday so the next issue TWIC is likely to be out on Sunday rather than Monday.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Classical World Chess Championship Kramnik - Leko

The Classical World Chess Championship takes place at the Centro Dannemann in Brissago, Switzerland September 25th - October 18th, 2004. A total of 14 games will be played under classical time controls. Vladimir Kramnik is defending the title he won from Garry Kasparov in 2000 against Hungarian GM Peter Leko, who qualified at the Dortmund Candidates in 2002.

Vladimir Kramnik took an early lead in his World Championship Match against Peter Leko by winning game one with black. Kramnik easily equalised against Leko's 1.e4 and the game went into a tricky but probably saveable ending. Leko missed a subtlety and was gradually was ground down in a technical endgame. Game two was drawn in only 18 moves when Kramnik made no progress at all with white in a Ruy Lopez.

14) ACP Members dislike FIDE Time Control

154 ACP members took part in a survey about time controls. The completed surveys clearly show, that a majority of the players disagree with the current official FIDE time control and prefer to return to the 7-hour time control. At the same time, a majority of the players prefer to play with an increment of 30 seconds. Taking into account the results of the survey, the ACP is to ask FIDE and continental federations to return to 7-hour rounds with an increment of 30 seconds. They propose the time control: (100'/40+50'/20+10'/SD)+30" [100 minutes for 40 moves + 50 minutes for 20 moves + 10 minutes to the end of the game + 30 seconds per move (added from move 1)], which was chosen by the players as best for use in official events like the World Championships, Continental Championships, and Zonal Tournaments.

Other ACP news:

One of the major reasons the ACP was formed was over the issue of official hotels for official competitions. After a meeting in Dresden with the ACP President Joel Lautier on the 29th of March, 2004, the ECU (European Chess Union) President Boris Kutin as well as ECU Board Member Zurab Azmaiparashvili and the ECU Secretary Horst Metzing stated that they personally disagreed with the rule compelling all participants in the European Individual Championship to stay in the hotel designated by the organizers and were ready to assist in having it abolished. As it was announced in the ECU Circular Letter 6/2004, "After a long discussion within the ECU Board it was decided to propose to the next General Assembly to delete the obligation that players have to stay in official hotels." We hope, that at the forthcoming ECU General Assembly in Calvia, European national federations will support the common recommendation of the ECU and the ACP and delete the obligation that players have to stay in official hotels. We encourage also other continental federations and FIDE, to take an example from the European Chess Union.

There was also a dispute over invitational rules to the 2003-2004 World Chess Championship which you can read about on their website.

The ACP General Assembly will take place on the 21st of October, 2004, from 15.00 to 19.00 in Sala Arturo Pomar (Casino), Calvia. The participation is open to everybody, but only members of the ACP will have the right to vote. The agenda will be published soon on the ACP website.

Also they have release their ACP tour standings: http://www.chess-players.org/eng/tour/standings.html with a brief report: http://www.chess-players.org/eng/news/viewarticle.html?id=209

16) 126th New York State Championship

Bill Townsend reports: The 126th New York State Championship was played 3rd-6th September 2004 at the Hudson Valley Resort near Kerhonkson, New York, a town about 80 miles north of New York City.

Seventeen-year-old grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura took the title with ease, his 5.5-0.5 record besting the rest of the field by a full point. His sole draw was given up in round five to FM Igor Nikolayev, who tied for second with former state champion IM Jay Bonin, both scoring 4.5-1.5. In retrospect Nakamura's overwhelming victory is not that surprising considering he was rated 300 points over his nearest rival.

The Open section was quite a bit smaller this year, mainly due to the inclusion of an Expert's section for those rated under 2,200. The winners of that section were Michael Salts and Felix Lopez, both with 4.5-1.5. Some games from this section are included as well.

This was the third year that this tournament has been played at this somewhat remote site but attendance was down sharply from previous years, most likely due to the dramatically higher gas prices this summer.

The New York State Championship is the longest running annual event in the United States, and perhaps the world. It began in 1878, and there are only a handful of missed years in the course of a century and a quarter. The list of former champions reads like a who's who of American Chess and includes players such as Frank Marshall, Reuben Fine, Isaac Kashdan, Arnold Denker, Larry Evans and more recently Robert Byrne, Roman Dzindzichashvili, Leonid Shamkovich, John Fedorowicz and Joel Benjamin. New York also counts two World Champions on the list: Jose Capablanca was champion in 1910, and world correspondence champion Hans Berliner was champion in 1953.

Hastings Chess Congress

The Hastings Chess Congress takes place 28th December 2004 to 9 January 2005 and has a new format. The Hastings Premier and Challengers are combined into one knockout tournament. Let us imagine 120 players enter for the event which finishes 6th January. Then 60 players go forward from the first round, with 4 lucky losers. These 64 players play a second round of knockout. The 56 losers play in the Challengers Swiss. The 64 players continue in one game knockouts until there are 8 players left. These 8 play in the Premier of 2 game knockouts. All players knocked out will be contracted to play in the Swiss Challengers, except for the losing finalists.

Players when knocked out will carry forward their score in the standard play games. Of course White would have been a big advantage. Thus White will have 65 minutes and Black 95 in which to make all their moves, with the addition of one minute per move cumulatively from the first. Where games are drawn, ties will be resolved first by blitz games, failing that an Armageddon play-off. Players will be able to gain title results from either event. The event will be part of the Association of Chess Professionals GP.

The weekend tournament takes place 7-9 January.

45th US Armed Forces Open

The 2004 (45th annual) US Armed Forces Open (USAFO) Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday October 9 to Monday (Columbus Day) October 11, 2004 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

This year the event has been opened up to any chess players from around the world who are in a military status (active, reserve, retired, national guard, militia, cadet, midshipman, or their national equivalent). The event is also on the World Chess Federation calendar. The organisers would love to see one or more players from the UK show up this year.

Military chess players from all nations of the world are cordially invited. The US Department of State told the organisers that there are no restrictions on whom they may invite. To speed up the visa application process [for those nations who do not have a "reciprocal no visa agreement" with the US], the event is on a special list of approved events at all U. S. consulates and embassies around the world.

The superb venue this year is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So far, players from India, Macedonia, Israel, Malaysia and Greece have indicated their intent to participate. There is the hope many other nations will also attend. So far the strongest military player that may compete is GM Efstratios Grivas (ELO 2520) from Greece, who is an instructor at the Hellenic Army Academy in Attica, Greece near Athens.

The entrance fee is free. Registration is via e-mail using the form provided on the website.
